Warm-up: Most people have a statement about life or a “philosophy of life” that guides them in making decisions throughout their life. This statement/philosophy helps a person achieve goals, choose a career, become a better person, treat others well, etc.

Example: “You must be the change that you want to see in the world.” (Gandhi)

Example: If somebody tells you it is impossible, prove them wrong.

Example: Don’t stop until you achieve your dreams.

A) Write down a statement, or a philosophy, that you live your life by which helps you to achieve your goals. It should summarize how you view challenges, goals, the future, or your place in the world. B) THEN, explain this statement.

Here are some famous philosophies of life: “Life is like a box of chocolates; you

never know what you’re gonna get.” (Forest Gump)

“The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.” (Walter Bagehot)

“A life spent making mistakes is … more useful than a life spent doing nothing.” (George Bernard Shaw)

PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE ESSAY

Not only do you need a philosophy of life to help you grow and achieve goals, but you need to have actual GOALS in life.

There are 3 types of goals that most people make:

1. Academic2. Personal3. SocialEx.: Gregor’s social goal in life revolved around

providing for his family while his personal goal is to one day quite the job that he hates to find a job that he loves. His current academic goal might be learning how to live with the limitations of his body!

PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE

Academic Goals can be: Getting A’s and B’s in college Getting an Associate’s Degree (2 years

of study), a Bachelor’s Degree (4 years of study), a Masters Degree (6 years of study) or a PhD (8 years)

Graduating from a prestigious college (Harvard, Yale, USC, etc.)

Taking classes to learn new languages

Learning something neweveryday

PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE

Social goals (“what can I do for other people?”) can be: Running an organization in

your community or local government

Regularly participating in charity work or volunteer work

Organizing clubs and social events in your neighborhood

Joining a cause (animal rights, Save Darfur coalition, fighting cancer, etc.)

Personal goals (to make you a better individual) can be: Having an enjoyable career Being successful in life Traveling Being a good parent Taking up a challenging hobby (hiking,

cooking, art, dance, etc.) Obtaining your dream house Starting a business

PHILOSOPHY OF LIFEYou are at a point in your life where goals

are necessary. On the bottom of your warm-up, come up with at least:

1. One academic goals 2. One personal goals and 3. One social goals

***Note: Your social goal MUST be related to your senior service learning project!

PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE Now, let’s read a sample Philosophy of Life

essay. As we read, write down the answer to the

following questions on a separate sheet of paper:

1. Does the write have an understandable philosophy of life stated in the beginning of the introduction paragraph?

2. Does the writer explain his/her philosophy of life?3. What three goals are listed in the thesis statement? 4. Does the writer give at least two specific ways that

he/she will accomplish his/her goals in the future in each body paragraph?

5. Does the writer explain his/her plans well?6. Does the writer have a conclusion that restates the

thesis and that wraps up the main ideas in the paper?
