The Principal’s Pen October 4, 2013 Dear Warren Community School Parents, Guardians, and Friends – October at school is about measuring progress – and we are making lots of it! Students in K through 2 continue to show their teachers the skills and knowledge that they bring every morning as they tackle review lessons and learn new information. Students in grades 3 through 6 are focusing on the state-mandated NECAP (New England Comprehensive Assessment Program) testing that provides us with information about what our students know and can do, while providing the state with the necessary reporting information for the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Wednesday evening we hosted WCS parents at an informational night on the progress RSU/MSAD 40 is making towards improved, personalized learning, enhanced and enriched literacy learning, and blended technology as tools available to our young learners. A guide entitled, “What is a standards based report card and why is RSU 40 changing to them?” was distributed, as were copies of our newest standards-based report cards for grades 4 through 6; copies of the standards-based report cards already used in Kindergarten through grades 3 were also available. The guide is reprinted later in this newsletter; you will see copies of our report cards at your upcoming parent/teacher conferences in November. Other parts of our evening included an overview of our Partnership in Comprehensive Literacy, an effort initiated with the University of Maine last year and continuing now. All of our teachers are involved with a combination of graduate level coursework through the University, professional reading, and work within our school and classrooms to create literacy-rich environments that provide a framework for personalized, focused learning for all students. Also shared with parents Wednesday night were several technology-based programs in literacy and mathematics that students are using alongside their classroom instruction; parents will be able to access them with their students at home as well; your classroom teacher has information on links and passwords. Speaking of progress….the playground is once again looking better – and safer. Plans are to have the structure and surrounding area open again for use on Monday, October 7, once it has been inspected. We will keep people posted on the progress. Looking forward to another action-packed month at Warren Community School! Deborah F. Howard Warren Community School October 04, 2013 Deborah Howard, Principal Justin Kangas, Asst. Dear Warren Community School Parents, Guardians, and Friends –

MIDNIGHT’S MINUTE

MIDNIGHT, our panther mascot, has some thoughts about recess:

Kids are enjoying new basketballs, footballs, and soccer balls Kids are using new jump ropes, Frisbees, and beanbags The playground structure is close to “open” – Monday, if all goes well!!

SO NOW IT IS TIME TO….Leave personal toys at home once again.

Arguments over sharing, taking turns with personal toys, etc.have been problematic and remind us all of

why our “Please keep personal toys at home” rule exists!

4-H Youth Science Day Offered in Waldoboro

This fall, millions of young people in Maine and throughout the country will become scientists for a day during the sixth annual 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD). This event, which takes place in urban, suburban and rural communities all across the nation, seeks to spark an early youth interest and leadership in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers in an effort keep America competitive in those fields.

This year, the National Science Experiment will be 4-H Maps & Apps. Designed by Colorado State University Extension, the activities will turn young people into geospatial thinkers as they design and map their ideal park, use GIS mapping to solve community problems and contribute data about their community to the United States Geological Survey.

University of Maine Cooperative Extension, Knox and Lincoln Counties will host a 4-H Youth Science Day, featuring Maps & Apps on Sunday, November 3 at our office at 377 Manktown Road in Waldoboro, Maine. The event is open to all youth age 9-18 and will take place from 2:00pm-4:00pm and pre-registration is required. You do not have to be a 4-H member to participate! To pre-register for this event, for more information or to request a disability accommodation, call 207.832.0343 or 800.244.2104 (in Maine).

For more than 100 years, 4-H has been at the forefront of teaching young people about science, engineering technology and math (STEM). 4-H National Youth Science Day is the premier national rallying event for year-round 4-H STEM programming, bringing together youth, volunteers and educators from the nation’s 109 land grant colleges and universities to simultaneously complete the National Science Experiment.
