President’s Message

It's hard to believe that the holidays are right in front of us! We had a busy October, and I don't think things will slow down anytime soon. Our Alzheimer's Walk in October was extremely successful, especially since so many people in this area were affected by Hurricane Harvey. Thanks to Judy Wheat, assisted by Gail Wilson and Susan Pitts, for their hard work and effort in organizing the event and to all Pilots for bringing in donations, arranging food and security, working at the event, publicizing, taking photos and making this event so meaningful. A big shout out goes to Anchor Printing & Graphics and Becky James for the signs and banners! We appreciate Past President Allene DonCarlos and husband, Steve, for hosting our Share Pilot Halloween Party at their home. Several wore costumes and others came as Astros fans, since there was a big game on that night. (Yay, Astros, our World Series Champions!) We had a mystery guest and several prospective members in attendance. The decorations were spooktacular! Pilots also were in attendance at Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital's Ladies Night Out for breast cancer awareness. It was an exciting evening! The City of Baytown's Veterans Day program was another opportunity for Pilots to show their patriotism. Since Make a Difference Day (Oct. 28) fell on such a busy week for us, at the November Business Meeting I will challenge you to go out and find people who are making a difference. You will receive a small gift for yourself, because I know that all our members are making a difference. You will also receive a gift for another person you see making a difference. This can be anyone, male or female, who is doing something that positively affects others. The gift will also be a way to share Pilot. Be prepared to share a few words at our November Program Meeting about the person you selected and how he or she is making a difference. November also brings International Care and Kindness Week and #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on holiday and end-of-year giving. Since this is our first #GivingTuesday, let's pass the hat Tuesday, November 28, to support the Pilot Endowment, which ensures the long-term sustainability of Pilot. Texas District Governor Connie Hernandez will visit with us at the November Business Meeting. Connie is a passionate Pilot member, and we look forward to hearing her message to our club. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you take time to enjoy food, friends and family!

TEXAS DISTRICT GOVERNOR CONNIE REPORTS

I am on cloud nine for several reasons: First, this last month was the launching of the majority of the official club visits. I, for one, was able to visit old friends in Nacogdoches again and I fell in love with the West Texas clubs. Vising clubs is the favorite role for the members of the DAC and you can see the JOY in all of our faces as we learn and share more about what all are doing! I truly love the close connecon we make and the lasng friendships made through our visits. Second, with the close of the last Fall Council workshop, it was obvious that our efforts were NOT in vain. Evaluaons indicate posive response in acquired training and knowledge. This was possible with “over the top” energy and muscle exerted by the host clubs of Dallas and El Campo. Thank you so very much! And finally, I know all of you had to have had successful “Share Pilot” events. I hope during each one you could hear the DAC bale cry in the back of your minds of our focus and goal for this Pilot year: “NET 1!” I know all of you were “bringing the JOY of Pilot” to others at each of your events. November is a busy month. Of course, many TX District Pilots, are looking forward first to the upcoming annual TBI “Circle of Friends” Camp the first weekend of November. It will be a JOY to see the campers again. The “Internaonal Care and Kindness Week” will follow during the second week f the month. I hope each and every club will be parcipang even if in small ways. The important thing is being visible in the community while “bringing JOY” and kindness to others. Feel free to send an email and let me know what your club is doing during this parcular week. And finally, don't forget 11/15/17 as the deadline for 501c3 clubs to turn in your 990 Form. In closing, I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving and a very special me with family and experiencing gratefulness for ALL that we have been given.

Connie Hernandez, 2017-2018 Texas District Governor

From Texas District Lt Governor FROM PILOT INTERNATIONAL ECR

November is tradionally a me to give thanks. As we celebrate our blessings, remember those less fortunate, affected by hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, and have suffered a loss. Your connued donaons to the Safe Harbor Fund will help Pilots affected by disasters.

The second week in November is Care and Kindness week created and supported by Pilot Internaonal, bringing awareness how a simple act of kindness can change a day, a life or a world by showing someone you care. Small acts such as offering assistance, complimenng someone, wring a nice note, buying a coffee, preparing a meal for a shut in, taking snacks to government offices, or doing a Pick Me Up will li someone spirits. There are many ways you and your club can make a difference. Your efforts will be appreciated and remembered.

November 28, 2017, Pilot Internaonal will parcipate in our first #Giving Tuesday, an Internaonal day of giving. #Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for Pilot Internaonal to expand our outreach to communies around the world. We encourage every Pilot to make a donaon!

All US Pilot Clubs are required to file with the IRS form 990, 990 EZ or the electronic 990N by November 15. The correct filing form generally depends on the financial acvity of the club and may be found on the IRS website (www.irs.gov). Be sure to use your club's EIN number and not that of Pilot Internaonal. Print copies of your completed form and confirmaon of filing for your records. Changes to the IRS 1023 EZ online applicaon to become a 501(c)(3) were made on January 1, 2017. All exisng clubs within PI's 501(c)(4) nonprofit subgroup are no longer eligible to use the EZ applicaon for 501(c)(3) because of the IRS addion of #11 on the applicaon worksheet. These clubs must now use the longer and more expensive 1023 applicaon. This change does not affect clubs that have already received their determinaon leers. Newly organized clubs who have never been a part of PI's 501(c)(4) may sll use the easy online applicaon if they wish to apply for a 501(c)(3).

This November give thanks for your blessings, remember others, be kind and caring, and celebrate with family and friends. Peggy Benton, ECR

Internaonal Care & Kindness Week (ICKW)

This Annual week and event held every year during the second week of November – do we

have acts of kindness to report? This week Pilots create sensaon with our work and projects for

caregivers and for those who deserve our aenon. We have gradually built and developed this event

over the last couple of years. We have even goen prey good at Pick-Me-Ups and we do these

throughout the year. Get greater aenon in November! This will bring Pilot more into the limelight,

grow our membership, and make our organizaon more marketable. So, let's be sure to share our

ideas and success. Remember, “Do More, Care More, Be More”

Because of the difficult circumstances our community has

faced, the toy drive will be conducted in a very compressed

with toys for children ages 0-12, which will be given to

children in our area who are in need.

If you are able and would like to help, please bring a new,

unwrapped toy to the next pilot meeting (November 14,

through Friday, Nov. 17. If you are unable to bring a toy to

coordinate a time with Susan Passmore to drop your
