Designing for education has always been a passion for us at WASA/Studio A. Our academic clients care deeply about design and intuitively understand the value of teaching within pragmatic, respectful and healthy environments. As architects, we find that we do our best work when challenged and inspired by committed clients. We know that learning happens anywhere a gifted teacher inspires a student, and our goal as architects is to give each teacher and student all the support possible to maximize growth and learning. For this reason, we devote ourselves to creating what we call the ideal learning environment.

The ideal learning environment is one that addresses the needs of the students and also facilitates the work of the teachers, staff, and institution as a whole. These facilities must be sensitive not only to their current needs, but should

also address the flexibility necessary to incorporate new modalities of learning as they develop. We apply this level of detail and care beyond the occupiable spaces (classrooms and lobbies), into the less visible components, such as engineering and other specialty systems. Our commitment to the integrated design process ensures that we create a facility that is maintainable, will last for generations, and promotes environmental responsibility.

We know that an institution’s facilities must be indicative of the commitment to their students, their mission and their community. With this in mind, we strive to create a learning environment that reflects the unique values, philosophy and goals of each of our clients and their institution.

Residence HallsWASA/Studio A knows that careful consideration must be granted to the design of student residential facilities given how important they are to the quality of student life. On the interior these spaces must achieve a delicate balance of flexibility, affordability and comfort. Most importantly, students need to be provided with a space that, through personalization, they can call their home. At the exterior these buildings need to represent the institution’s mission and be respectful to the context of the campus.

Our in-house architecture, engineering and preservation groups give us the capacity to work on student residential facilities of all sizes, settings and eras. Our expertise in these areas allows us to generate creative solutions to the unique issues of our clients.

Academic RecreationAcademic athletic and recreational centers are a critical element of campus life and are increasingly important in recruiting students. Not only do these spaces promote healthier living for individual students, but they also act as a venue for gathering the academic community and inspiring pride in the university. These principles guide the design of our athletic facilities not only to house recreational activities, but to create critical leisure and spectator space.

In addition to the larger image of the center, one must also consider the unseen conditions and issues that go in to a successful athletic facility. During the design phase it is critical that WASA/Studio A, not only plann the building program, but also pay careful attention to issues such as storage, lighting, ventilation, security and sanitation. Our integrated design approach allows us to address these issues and seamlessly incorporate the solutions while we develop the architecture.

Academic LaboratoriesMany think of science labs as technical spaces and systems. However, they simultaneously must perform for each insitution’s methodology on an instructional level. We stress how important it is to recognize that people inhabit these environments; the right balance must be struck between technical systems and a facility that is comfortable, efficient and even inspiring for its inhabitants.

This involves such environmental concerns as natural light and views, air quality and artificial lighting, acoustics, the quality of finishes and the overall character of each space so faculty and students have a sense of well-being and are supported in their work. These spaces must facilitate the process of teaching, learning and experimentation while incorporating advanced technologies and anticipating the future needs. This level of quality and care for the learning environment is what our designers bring to the table.

Collaboration through BIM TechnologyBolstering our essential concept of Integrated Design is our complete immersion in the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools on all projects. This intelligent program encourages early decision-making due to the creation and sharing of information rich documents. It allows for an unprecedented degree of coordination and integration among the various trades, creating clarity during the bidding and construction processes and minimizing delays and cost to our clients.

WASA/Studio A’s practice has evolved beyond design services to providing construction coordination assistance. The use of our integrated BIM models help to support trade coordination efforts and create MEP shop drawing. Ultimately, this extends the as-built model to become the clients tool for facilities management.

Bank Street College of Education Tabas AuditoriumNew York, NY The renovation of this auditorium has created a space to house an arts programs, a performance area and classrooms for the elementary school. In addition to improved aesthetics, the theater reveals new lighting, sound and rigging systems, an enhanced acoustic environment, new seating, new stage and auditorium flooring, the addition of a proscenium, new HVAC and electrical distribution and revised fire protection. Pratt InstituteMyrtle Hall, School of Digital ArtsBrooklyn, NY Pratt’s most ambitious project to date, Myrtle Hall is designed to house a multitude of growing programs and departments, including the Department of Digital Arts and the Digital Arts Lab, Student Services and the Pratt Center for Community Development, a non-profit housing advocacy group. This 120,000-sf mixed-use building also contains retail space on the ground floor. Located on the newly rejuvenated Myrtle Avenue in Clinton Hill, an historic neighborhood landmarked district, the building represents a projection of Pratt’s brand of design innovation and excellence into the larger community beyond its traditional gated campus.Photography by Alex Severin

Hofstra University Performing Arts Center Hempstead, NY Housing a black-box theater, musical and dramatic rehearsal spaces and faculty offices, this mixed-use program presented a major challenge due to the need for significant acoustic separation between the offices and the performance spaces. Great care was taken—both structurally and acoustically—to ensure that each user group would have a world-class facility, further enhancing the university’s reputation as a destination for students of the performing arts.Photography by Jim Brown

WASA/STUDIO AFEATURED PROJECTS

Columbia University McVickar Hall New York, NY Originally built in 1908, McVickar Hall is an eight-story 50,000-sf structure that Columbia University decided to convert into office space for Alumni Relations and Development in 2005. Our architecture and engineering teams were responsible for the interior gut renovation and a façade conservation project on the exterior was completed by the firm’s preservation group. State University of New York, OswegoSheldon Hall Restoration Oswego, NY WASA/Studio A performed an extensive investigation of this Neo-Classical building at SUNY Oswego. Not only did we document existing conditions, but we also provided recommendations for a holistic restoration strategy, including code analysis, identification of energy deficiencies, scheduling, phasing and budget estimates.

Brooklyn College Library Cafe/Computing Center Brooklyn, NY The Brooklyn College Student Computing Center is a study facility in a casual lounge setting offering students full access 24 hours a dayto the CUNY-wide network, internet services, faculty teaching programs and various other computer services. Four years after the completion of Phase I of the Computer Center, WASA/Studio A was commissioned to design the one-story pavillion as a Phase II extension. Photography by Jim Brown

Melrose Community CenterBronx, NY WASA/Studio A provided architectural and engineering design services for a 20,000-sf community center geared toward visual arts, computer literacy and other classes. Located within a public housing project in the Bronx, the new building includes 2,500 sf of administrative offices and a 10,000-sf athletic/recreation facility.

Western Connecticut State University Fairfield Hall Danbury, CT WASA/Studio A designed the overall restoration for this historic dormitory. The scope of services included new partitions, bathrooms, ceilings, lights, flooring, doors, hardware, wardrobe cabinets and associated work to provide new code-compliant energy-efficient units.

Fashion Institute of Technology Kaufman Residence Hall New York, NY WASA/Studio A converted a 300,000-sf former manufacturing building into a new residence hall to house more than 1,100 students. The housing design is apartment-style, complete with double-occupancy bedrooms and full kitchens and bathrooms for every unit. As a gut rehab, all mechanical, electrical, lighting and power systems were replaced, as well as repairs to the exterior envelope.

Planning Study for Residence Hall 309 East 9th Street New York, NY WASA/Studio A performed a planning study for a large vacant public school building in the Lower East Side. We developed various redevelopment schemes for its conversion to a student residence hall.

New York University Jerome S. Coles Sports & Recreation Center New York, NY WASA/Studio A provided architectural and engineering services for the design of this recreational center, which contains all facilities for intercollegiate athletics.

Jersey City State University Athletics Facility Jersey City, NJ This 70,000-sf new facility houses an NCAA regulation gymnasium with four full-size basketball courts, an indoor track and bleacher seating. The building also includes an Olympic-size swimming pool, locker rooms, training rooms, squash courts, fitness center, physical training center and administrative offices.

City University of New York Various Campus Research Laboratories New York, NY While on a term contract with the NYC Department of Design, Construction & Management, WASA/Studio A has been responsible for architecture and engineering services at many of these Universities, including Brooklyn College, City College, Lehman College and Borough of Manhattan Community College.

Integrated DesignWASA/Studio A’s experience allows us to collaborate in-house as integrated project-specific teams. Each project team comes together early in the design process and maintains creative collaboration, coordination and problem-solving techniques with the client. In this manner all aspects of a project are developed simultaneously and in concert with each other.
