Professor Edward Torres
Headmaster, Washburn School
Director, Washburn English Institute
Greetings to parents and/or guardians
As of Monday, September 10, 2018, I started as the Headmaster at this prestigious institution. I did
not hesitate to join the members of the administrative team (Ms. Myrna Llull, Mr. Ronnie
Lopezcepero, and Mrs. Rosa Figueroa) to continue working to guarantee that the mission and vision
of Washburn School are sustained and operational. This is a responsibility and challenge I
undertake with seriousness and commitment in partnership with my administrative colleagues,
teachers, students, parents, and community-at-large. Besides being the Headmaster, I am directing
and supervising, conjunctly with Mr. Ronnie Lopezcepero, the Washburn English Institute in the
evenings and Saturday mornings.
The administration, faculty, support staff, and students have been in transition at the school after
my appointment. One of my major responsibilities is to supervise Mrs. Rosa Figueroa, the
Academic Director. The faculty and staff (instructional and non- instructional) report and are
supervised directly by Mrs. Rosa Figueroa, Academic Director. My immediate supervisor is Mrs.
Myrna Llull, VP, Board of Directors
If you have not seen it, I invite you to go to the staff and faculty section of our webpage to learn
more about my educational background and professional experience. So, there is no doubt that I am
excited to be here, and I invite you to stop by to meet you personally.
I would like to share with you some experiences and events that have occurred from
September 10 to October 5:
1. On Wednesday, September 12, I was introduced to the students and all the teachers in the
classrooms. It was the best birthday gift I have ever received.
2. I initiated the National Hispanic Month Celebration idea school wide and shared different
strategies and instructional activities with teachers to integrate in their respective subjects regarding
the theme established.
3. I have been meeting with the Mrs. Figueroa to discuss existing and future teacher support
systems, teacher observations and evaluation, lesson planning, and professional development for
teachers. Those are just a few areas of the many areas we have been addressing. We have had two
administrative team meetings also.
4. I had my first faculty meeting on Friday, September 21, where I was formally introduced by Mrs.
Myrna Lull. At this meeting, I invited administration and faculty to become members of the
professional organization PRTESOL, an association that I presided on the board of directors in
2014.
5. Participated in my first Student of the Month event where I met parents, grandparents and other
visitors.
6. On Saturday, September 29, I represented Washburn School at the PRTESOL Southern Chapter
Conference held at the PUCPR, Ponce Campus. At this event, I hand delivered 10 membership
forms and one renewal for PRTESOL: 8 teachers and 3 administrators from Washburn School.
I have a lifetime membership in PRTESOL because I served as president on the board of directors
in 2014.
What is happening this week?
1. Wednesday, October 10, I have invited 5 student teachers, two (2) from the InterAmerican
University of PR and three (3) from the Pontifical Catholic University of PR, Ponce Campuses.
They will receive an orientation, visit and observe classrooms, and get a tour of the school.
2 As part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, teachers have decorated the classroom doors
and classrooms with the country assigned by me. I invite you to join us on Monday, October 15
for the culmination events “Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at Washburn School”.
On Friday, October 12, as part of these festivities, I have invited Dr. Aníbal Muñoz Claudio,
Puerto Rican author of an anthology of short stories titled “Boricuan” and President of PRTESOL.
He will be addressing the students in grades 7 to 12 in our Learning Center at 10:50 am. Our students
have been reading some of the short stories. At 3 pm, he and Mr. Efrain Soto Santiago, Vice-
President of PRTESOL, will provide the faculty an information session on PRTESOL and TESOL
International, Inc.
Next update will be shorter. Look forward to meeting you soon!
