  • History of Our Game

    This year marks the 46th Annual Washington Activity Coordinators Association conference. This event's long and heralded history began in 1970, when a group of Seattle area activity coordinators voted to get together and underwrite a conference. With this in mind, the first annual conference was held in the spring of 1971. Under the direction of Walt Dawson of Shorecrest High School, Coke Roberts of West Seattle High School, Pat Woodward of Cleveland High School, and Fritz Mahlert of Nathan Hale High School, funds for the first conference were partially defrayed by the generous contributions of business firms who exhibited their products. This supportive tradition has continued to this day. Members are from middle level, junior high, and high schools and from a variety of activity areas. Delegates include activity coordinators, cheer coaches, ASB and club advisers, administrators, athletic directors, leadership teachers, and activity secretaries.

    Welcome to WACA 2016 As a delegate, I sometimes waited until a few weeks before the conference to register, secure a sub and so on. Then, I showed up, attended sessions, and walked away with a positive, revitalizing experience that even led to friendships and other opportunities. As president, I signed the contract for the convention center in December of 2014. A lot of behind the scenes work has been happening ever since. This is much like both sports and leadership activities in our schools. The majority of the population shows up for the final product: dances, assemblies, service projects, games and matches. And, this is fine, because it is satisfying to have a great turnout. But, it is very easy to cheer or critique without really understanding the hours of work that went into the preparation. As advisors and coaches, we know this is the case, but we do it anyway because we love it. We know the life lessons learned from being part of a team; from facing adversity, overcoming obstacles, and meeting goals we thought were maybe beyond our reach. Nelson Mandela said, “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does…” Living in the land of 12s, we know this to be true. There are so many parallels between sports and activities; so many lessons in character to be learned, so many accomplishments to be celebrated. Let this conference be the springboard for conversations about sports, ASB/Activities, and developing leaders in our schools. Leaders aren’t born, they are made. And here, you are surrounded by educators who know the value of investing quality time in your students. You know the countless hours it takes, the hard conversations that have to happen, in order for growth to occur. Take every opportunity you can to network, pick the brains of other delegates, attend sessions and gather ideas. Be present. Be engaged. This conference depends on the energy of every delegate, board member and presenter. Thank you for being here. Becky Latham WACA President

    Get Involved in WACA - Board Openings!

    Get involved with the organization by running (elected positions) or applying (appointed/unfilled positions) for one of the positions listed below. Information and applications will be available at the registration desk and area meetings. If you have questions, please see any current board member! Elected Positions: Area Representative (Areas 2, 4, 6, & 8) - 2 year term - elected by area delegates. Middle Level Representative - 2 year term - elected by all delegates. President Elect - 3 year term - elected by all delegates. (In accordance with the WACA Constitution, to be eligible to run for the office of President, an individual must have served a minimum of one term on the WACA Board.)

    Appointed Positions: Communication Coordinator - 3 year term - appointed by the President with approval from board. Technology Coordinator - 3 year term - appointed by the President with approval from board. Certification Coordinator - 3 year term - appointed by the President with approval from board. (if constitutional change is approved)

    All positions require an application that needs to be returned to a WACA Board Member at the Information Table no later than Thursday, March 10, at 4:00 pm.

    Hall of Fame Nominations

    The WACA Hall of Fame was established in 2003 to honor individuals who have made a significant, lasting impact on student activities in the state of Washington. Recipients of the award have demonstrated leadership and dedication to providing high quality programs at the school, district and state level. WACA Hall of Fame Criteria:

    -A minimum of 20 years of service and involvement in student activities and/or student leadership in the state of Washington. -Previous or present Activity Coordinator, Club or Class Advisor, Cispus or Chewelah Peak Counselor, Leadership Teacher, ASB Secretary or Bookkeeper. -Previous or present workshop presenter at WACA, NASC, WASC, Middle Level Regional or other Advisor Conference at the local, state or national level. -Previous or present chair, host or facilitator of a WACA, WASC, LASC, Middle Level Regional or other conference for student leaders or advisors. -Demonstrated a commitment and passion to the promotion and advancement of effective student activity programs and/or student leadership programs within the state of Washington.

    The WACA Board is seeking nominations for the Hall of Fame. If you would like to nominate someone for this honor, nomination forms and information will be available at the registration table and area meetings and online at wacaonline.org. For more information or questions, please contact Coley Veitenhans (High School Rep) or Lana Yenne (Middle Level Rep). Deadline for online nominations is December 1st of each year. Nominees remain in the nominee pool for up to three years.

  • Speaker Showcase—Wednesday Afternoon

    Reggie Jones—Believe Beyond—Reggie delivers a blue print of overcoming adversity in all situations. Using his own traumatic past he illustrates how he aspired to become a success story rather than a statistic. He lays out practical steps that others can take as well. Or as ASB Advisor Dustin Lamb described it “Today Reggie took the cycle of poverty and wiped it out and made it the pyramid of success.”

    John “Push” Gaines—Today, John is a different person. “For me, I came to a point where I decided I wasn’t going to wait for change to come to my situation but rather I intended to be the change. I was going to live my life with faith, and no matter what came my way, I was going to PUSH. I told myself I would use my pain as my motivation to achieve everything my heart desires. With PUSH I just hope to inspire others to PUSH for their dreams and not to give up on them regardless of where they came from.”

    Maddie Neuman— I watched in amazement as I saw that simply telling my story was changing people's lives for the better. I realized that this story isn't about me and it isn't about OCD - this story is about every single one of us. It's about not giving fear power over our lives. It's about persevering through challenges and believing that we can achieve our dreams with hard work and dedication. It's about bravery. It's about love.

    Keynote—Wednesday Evening: Stu Cabe This is the year that marks the beginning of something unique and special. This year (2016), WACA’s theme “For the Love of the Game” becomes the springboard for an exciting new chapter in which dreams can become goals and love can become a platform. Stu’s keynote and breakout session will be as motivating as it is revealing, interesting as it is informative, setting the stage for the next generation of leadership exploration. WACA will mark the beginning of something pivotal in the leadership world and Stu invites you to join him as he explores the next great resource for improved school climate and culture.

    Keynote—Thursday Morning: Anthony Robles "We wrestle with our own opponents on a daily basis. These challengers can come in numerous forms whether it be a physical challenge, emotional, or even relational issues that can overtake us. No matter what opponent we are wrestling against we can be UNSTOPPABLE."
