CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE, WASHINGTON, D.C. NOVEMBER 18, 2012
TODAY’S READINGS “
f that day or hour, no one knows.” (Mark 13:32) Let’s take a short quiz. The first question is a general one: what goals do you have for your life? The second
is a bit more specific: what are your goals for the next five years? And the third is even more specific: what are your goals for the next year? Take a few minutes to write down your answers.
Now one final question: imagine that you knew Jesus was coming back tomorrow. How would your responses to the previous three questions differ? When a friar asked St. Francis what he would do in this situation, Francis, who was gardening at the time, said: “I would keep hoeing my garden.”
What about you? Would you keep going about your business? Most of us would make some last‐minute changes. The lines at the confessional booth would probably reach out the church door and down the street for a few miles. Local parishes would run out of hosts because of the many people coming in for their last Mass. The phone lines would probably be jammed with people calling family and friends trying to make eleventh‐hour reparations. What about that last call to the poor? With no need to keep food stocked up, we can hope that people would be willing to give more to those who are hungry—sort of a last meal for the poor.
But this is all fanciful speculation. Jesus told us that no one knows when the end will come—even he doesn’t know! So our best strategy is to live each day as if it were our last. We should try our best always to be at peace with the Lord and with the people around us. We should also make sure we are taking care of the needy in our midst. Then, whenever Jesus returns, we’ll pass the quiz with no problem at all.
“Lord, help me to keep my eyes open for your presence and my heart fixed on you. Lord, I want to be ready to greet you when you come again in glory!”

dvent prepares us for Christmas, the celebration of theChrist Child coming to us in Bethlehem, and calls us to
direct our hearts and minds to await Christ’s coming againat the end of time.
This year’s Advent Day of Recollection falls on theSolemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the BlessedVirgin Mary. On this day, Catholics celebrate that Mary, from the moment of her conception, was without sin inanticipation of her cooperation with God in theIncarnation.
Father,The image of the Virgin is found in your Church.
Mary had a faith that your Spirit preparedand a love that never knew sin,
for you kept her sinlessfrom the first moment of her conception.Trace in our actions the lines of her love,
in our hearts her readiness of faith.Prepare once again a world
for your Son who lives and reigns with youand the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen.

My dear friends, “All good giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of light, with whom there is no alteration or shadow caused by change.” Those words are from the New Testament Letter of t. James. For me, there’s a special timeliness about them because this year, more than ever before, I am Sespecially aware that everything I have is truly a gift from God. Perhaps this is true for you, too. In these times when we are experiencing so much uncertainty, we turn to the God in whom there is no change, and we give thanks for the many blessings we have received. And e find ourselves thinking about the many people in our midst and throughout our world who lack even w
the basic necessities of life. The need is overwhelming, but as a community of faith, we can do infinitely more than we can do individually. Together, as a parish community of the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, we can reach out in the name of Christ to the poor, the elderly, and the immigrant. We can celebrate in a powerful way he mysteries of our faith; and we can provide a refuge and a gathering place for the city in times of tsorrow and rejoicing. So let us commit ourselves to be good stewards of the gifts God has given us: by participating regularly and actively in the Sunday Eucharist; by sharing our time and talent with our community; and by making prayerful commitment to support St. Matthew’s Cathedral financially (perhaps especially by arranging afor regular offertory contributions via Faith Direct), to the extent we are able.
hank you for your prayerful response and for all the community what it is! T

La Catedral de San Mateo
y el Programa de Adopte-Una-Familia
Navidad 2012
