Is your business interested in saving money and resources?

Funding opportunity!

NORPAC Foods, a grower-owned vegetable processing co-operative with four plants in Marion County, has just been recently recertifi ed as an EarthWISE business. As a farmer cooperative tied closely to the land, NORPAC has been at the forefront of sustainability in both agriculture and manufacturing. This includes a high recycling rate, minimizing our entirely recyclable packaging materials, effective energy/water conservation committees, irrigating our processing water, feeding our vegetable waste to livestock, and purchasing renewable energy.

EarthWISE is a free business environmental assistance program through Marion County Public Works. Certifi cation recognizes businesses and agencies committed to environmentally friendly practices. For more information about how we can help your

business become more sustainable and save money, give us a call.

Do you have an idea that could reduce waste in Marion County but lack the funding to implement it? The Marion County Waste Reduction Grant Program may be able to help!

The objectives of the grant program are to:

• Reduce the amount of waste generated in Marion County.

• Reduce the amount of waste disposed at Marion County facilities.

• Encourage the development of products made from recovered

materials from Marion County, markets for those products, and the

use of products containing recycled materials.

Two types of proposals will be considered: waste reduction projects

that directly reduce waste, and promotion and education programs.

For the Spring 2011 offering, a possible $100,000 in grants

is available through the program. Individuals, companies,

governments and non-profi t organizations are eligible to apply.

Application deadline is May 27, 2011. Visit mcrecycles.net for

complete details

SPRING 2011WASTE MATTERS

At the request of Marion County, haulers in the county will be providing mixed recycling roll carts to all rural and sparse customers and begin providing pick up service on July 1, 2011.

For the fi rst time, rural residents can avoid trips to recycle depots that are often miles away, and divert more material from the garbage to be given a second life through recycling!

There will be also be a rate increase, approved by the Marion County Board of Commissioners after a public hearing in November 2010, to cover the additional operating costs that the haulers will incur to provide the service. The monthly increase to “rural” customers will be $6.97 per month; the increase to “sparse” customers will be $8.72 per month.

The rate increase can be completely or nearly offset in many households by downsizing the garbage cart size through diverting recyclables to the roll cart. The amount of the cost offset depends on what size garbage cart a household currently has – check with your hauler for rate details.

If you have any further questions about the program, or what you can include in the mixed recycling roll cart, please feel free to visit our website at mcrecycles.net, call us at 503-588-5169, or [email protected].

Fact: Water that enters the storm drain system does NOT get treated at a water treatment facility before going to streams.

Fact: Stormwater runoff can carry debris, chemicals, dirt and other pollutants straight into your local stream!

Fact: Polluted stormwater runoff can have many harmful effects on plants, fi sh, animals, and people.

Be a Solution to Stormwater Pollution

• Never dump anything down storm drains (& report illicit dumping).• Maintain your car to prevent oil leaks / recycle used motor oil.• Don’t over fertilize your lawn; do pick up pet waste.
