Zilph BreezesHome in FrontIn Yacht Race
J. E. Hayes's 40-Footer Out¬sails Rowdy in Regalta onSound by I Min. 44 See.
It was a fortunate thing for theyachtsmen who gathered off the Larch-mont Yacht Club yesterday that it wasthe thirty-ninth annual regatta of thoorganization. Being tho annual race
and not tho usual week-end brush, thestarts wero made nt noon. At thathour a fresh northwest breeze was
blowing. '.The wind held until prac¬tically all of. the classes finished, giv¬ing the fifty-three yachts that came tothe line one of the best races of theyear. It then died out completely.
If anything, there was just a littlebit too much breeze when the racecommittee) established the line offLarchmont breakwater. There was somuch breeze that the .'50-fnoter Adois, the property of Fred B. Richards, brokelier throat halyard and could not start. That was not the worst accident. SallyIX, a handicap boat, which belongs toA. E. Black, capsized and had to betowed back to New Rochelle by JohnHanan's houseboat, which was near athand.Four forty-footers of the New York
Yacht Club had a good race over a
twenty-one-mile course made up of tworeaches and a beat home. The winnerwas Zilph, the property of J. B. Hayes. The craft boat H. S. Duell's Rowdy by1 minute and 4«t seconds. In the thirty-foot division of the same club Oriole, which belongs to S. C. Pirie, defeatedEdmund Lang's Banzai by 23 seconds. The summaries:

Washburn Takes TennisFinalFrom Throckmorton
4
Singles Winner Also Cap¬tures Honors in DoublesPaired With Mathey
By FkccJ HawthorneWatson M. Washburn accomplished
yesterday, in the final round of theSingles in the annual invitation lawntennis tournament of the Nassau Coun¬try Club, what S. Howard Voshell andDean Mathey, in turn, had failed todo the day before, namely, to defeatHarold A. Throckmorton.Washburn won at 2.6, 6.4, 6.1,
8.6, and although three sets to onewould in3icatc a thoroughly decisivevictory, I cannot help the feeling thathis mnrgin was far less than that. HadThrockmorton taken that fourth set(and he made a mighty bid for it), thechances were that he would have con¬tinued at the same superlative pacehe struck in the latter part of thematch and would have swept Wash-burn before him.And yet this is not perhaps quite
fair to yesterday's winner. Wash-burn played the kind of tennis thatonly the most aggressive, brillianttype of net game would overcome. Hewas making few errors from the backof the court and the ball from hisracquet bounded low, with a skiddingaction that made it doubly tricky tohandle effectively on the turf surface.Add to this that Washburn was deadlyon his passing shots when his opponentstarted for the net, and you have anidea of the task that confrontedThrockmorton. The New Jersey State champion was
very uneven in his work yesterday, and it was not until the fourth set, when Washburn led him at 5.0 ongames and held the service, thatThrockmorton came to sudden powerand began a tight that had the big;gallery tense.
Loser Shows ImprovementIt seemed that this apparently hope¬
less situation was the very stimulus, the spur, as it were, that Throckmor¬ton needed. Shots began to come offhis racquet that it had seemed impos¬sible for him to make before. Hecharged the net furiously and yet witha deadly effectiveness that had previ¬ously been lacking.
Washburn felt the change in his op¬ponent's game, saw his own safe leadslipping rapidly away, yet he refusedto let it upset him. After Throckmor¬ton had taken three games in a row, bringing the score to 5.3, there camea softening in Washburn's play. Hediscovered that many of his attemptedpassing shots were bein«: smothered

by Throckmorton's dazzling work Rtthe net. The New Jersey championwas closing in from the base line withgreat speed, being right on top of theball almost as soon as it came overthe net.Throckmorton rushed ahead, bringing
the games to 5.all by super-volleying,the ball slipping over the net at suchunplayable angles that Washburn was
often several feet out of position. Andlobbying did no good, for Throckmor¬ton was "killing" everything overheadwith a vengeance. Then the seemingly inevitable let¬
down came in the New Jersey man'sgame. Washburn broke through ser¬vice as his opponent sent three easyvolleys out of court. Throckmortonretaliated by taking the twelfth gamefor 6.all, only to drop the next at"love," as he made two errors on 'cross-court volleys and Washburn scoredwith two beautiful low volleys acrossfore-court.
Throckmorton Loses StrideIn the fourteenth game, Washburn
serving, the points reached 30.all. Onthe next service Throckmorton was notready to receive and caught the ball mhis hand. This seemed to shake himsufficiently to throw him off his stride, and he netted a backhand off service on
the next point, for the loss of thegame, set and match.Washburn's is the sixth name to be
engraved on the Nassau ChallengeBowl, previous winners being Mathev,1913; W. J. Clothier, 1914; Karl Behr.1915; Lindley Murray, 1918; W. MerrillHall, 1919.Paired with Ichiya Kumagae in the
doubles, Throckmorton met his seconddefeat of the day by losing to Wash-burn and Dean Mathey at 6.2, 3.6,4.6, 10.8, 6.4. Before this, he andIehiya had defeated Voshell and BealsWright at 6. '¿, Jj -1 in the semi-finalin a match that was notable for trulyferocious hitting on the part of bothThrockmorton and Kumagae. In theother semi-final Washburn and Matheydefeated W.
