Hayes's 40-Footer Out¬ sails Rowdy in Regalta on Sound by I Min. 44 See. It was a fortunate thing for the yachtsmen who gathered off the Larch- mont Yacht Club yesterday that it was the thirty-ninth annual regatta of tho organization. Being tho annual race and not tho usual week-end brush, the starts wero made nt noon. At that hour a fresh northwest breeze was blowing. '.The wind held until prac¬ tically all of. the classes finished, giv¬ ing the fifty-three yachts that came to the line one of the best races of the year. It then died out completely. If anything, there was just a little bit too much breeze when the race committee) established the line off Larchmont breakwater. There was so much breeze that the .'50-fnoter Adois, the property of Fred B. Richards, broke lier throat halyard and could not start. That was not the worst accident. Sally IX, a handicap boat, which belongs to A. E. Black, capsized and had to be towed back to New Rochelle by John Hanan's houseboat, which was near at hand. Four forty-footers of the New York Yacht Club had a good race over a twenty-one-mile course made up of two reaches and a beat home. The winner was Zilph, the property of J. B. Hayes. The craft boat H. S. Duell's Rowdy by 1 minute and 4«t seconds. In the thirty- foot division of the same club Oriole, which belongs to S. C. Pirie, defeated Edmund Lang's Banzai by 23 seconds. Washburn Takes Tennis FinalFrom Throckmorton 4 Singles Winner Also Cap¬ tures Honors in Doubles Paired With Mathey By FkccJ Hawthorne Watson M. Washburn accomplished yesterday, in the final round of the Singles in the annual invitation lawn tennis tournament of the Nassau Coun¬ try Club, what S. Howard Voshell and Dean Mathey, in turn, had failed to do the day before, namely, to defeat Harold A. Throckmorton. Washburn won at 2.6, 6.4, 6.1, 8.6, and although three sets to one would in3icatc a thoroughly decisive victory, I cannot help the feeling that his mnrgin was far less than that. Had Throckmorton taken that fourth set (and he made a mighty bid for it), the chances were that he would have con¬ tinued at the same superlative pace he struck in the latter part of the match and would have swept Wash- burn before him. And yet this is not perhaps quite fair to yesterday's winner. Wash- burn played the kind of tennis that only the most aggressive, brilliant type of net game would overcome. He was making few errors from the back of the court and the ball from his racquet bounded low, with a skidding action that made it doubly tricky to handle effectively on the turf surface. Add to this that Washburn was deadly on his passing shots when his opponent started for the net, and you have an idea of the task that confronted Throckmorton. The New Jersey State champion was very uneven in his work yesterday, and it was not until the fourth set, when Washburn led him at 5.0 on games and held the service, that Throckmorton came to sudden power and began a tight that had the big; gallery tense. Loser Shows Improvement It seemed that this apparently hope¬ less situation was the very stimulus, the spur, as it were, that Throckmor¬ ton needed. Shots began to come off his racquet that it had seemed impos¬ sible for him to make before. He charged the net furiously and yet with a deadly effectiveness that had previ¬ ously been lacking. Washburn felt the change in his op¬ ponent's game, saw his own safe lead slipping rapidly away, yet he refused to let it upset him. After Throckmor¬ ton had taken three games in a row, bringing the score to 5.3, there came a softening in Washburn's play. He discovered that many of his attempted passing shots were bein«: smothered Point Score FIRST SET Pts. Gs. The New Jersey champion was closing in from the base line with great speed, being right on top of the ball almost as soon as it came over the net. Throckmorton rushed ahead, bringing the games to 5.all by super-volleying, the ball slipping over the net at such unplayable angles that Washburn was often several feet out of position. And lobbying did no good, for Throckmor¬ ton was "killing" everything overhead with a vengeance. Then the seemingly inevitable let¬ down came in the New Jersey man's game. Washburn broke through ser¬ vice as his opponent sent three easy volleys out of court. Throckmorton retaliated by taking the twelfth game for 6.all, only to drop the next at "love," as he made two errors on 'cross- court volleys and Washburn scored with two beautiful low volleys across fore-court. Throckmorton Loses Stride In the fourteenth game, Washburn serving, the points reached 30.all. On the next service Throckmorton was not ready to receive and caught the ball m his hand. This seemed to shake him sufficiently to throw him off his stride, and he netted a backhand off service on the next point, for the loss of the game, set and match. Washburn's is the sixth name to be engraved on the Nassau Challenge Bowl, previous winners being Mathev, 1913; W. J. Clothier, 1914; Karl Behr. 1915; Lindley Murray, 1918; W. Merrill Hall, 1919. Paired with Ichiya Kumagae in the doubles, Throckmorton met his second defeat of the day by losing to Wash- burn and Dean Mathey at 6.2, 3.6, 4.6, 10.8, 6.4. Before this, he and Iehiya had defeated Voshell and Beals Wright at 6. '¿, Jj -1 in the semi-final in a match that was notable for truly ferocious hitting on the part of both Throckmorton and Kumagae. In the other semi-final Washburn and Mathey defeated W. Merrill Hall and C. M. I Bull jr., at 6.1, 2.6, 6.3. Hunter Defeats Three in Day On University Heights Courts y>_.-,-.-. Kynaston Eliminates Rob¬ inson in Straight Sets; Fischer Beats Dr. Faber Seven players had found their way into the round before the semi-final yesterday evening in the annual North Side championship singles tournament, on the clay courts of the UfTiversity Heights Tennis Club. The bottom bracket in the fourth quarter remains to be filled. Francis T. Hunter, runner-up for the Brooklyn championship on Sunday, did a full dav's work, defeating, in turn, Harrison R. Hathaway, at 6.2. 6.3; and Paul Martin and Benjamin Landau, at 6.4, 6.1. Hunter showed few signs of wear as a result of hi3 terrific struggle on Sunday, and was driving! with great power off his forehand and following in on service for severe over- hand volleys. Percy L. Kynaston, Queens and Old Dominion champion, eliminated L. V. Robinson in straight sets at 6.3, 6.4, in this fourth round, never being ex- tended as he covered the back-co,urt with thoroughness and success. Will- iam M. Fischer, the base-line veteran, playing very steadilv, defeated Dr. G. W. Faber at 6.2, 6.3, in the fourth round. Alfred H. Hammett had a man's size job on his hands before he could get the better of his old foeman, Henry H. Bassford, the sets going at 9.7, 4.6, 6.4, with Hammett employing the chop stroke and Bassford relying on/his deep court drives. Samuel R. MacAllister and Herbert H. Manches¬ ter were the other two who came through yesterday, J. W. Mersereau having gained his bracket on Sunday. Jack Kelly, of Philadelphia, national scull¬ ing champion, to-day defeated Robert Dibble, Toronto, the Canadian title- holder, in the championship senior single sculls race, the feature of the annual Independence Day regatta, rowed over a mile and a quarter course on the Schuykill River. Kelly finished two and one-half lengths ahead of the Canadian in 7 minutes 63 seconds. Dibble's time was 7:56 3-5. Earlier in the afternoon Kelly beat Dibble by 10 feet in the quarter-mile dash. His time was 1:20 and Dibble's 1:20 4-5. Yacht Meets With Accident Sailing his yacht, the Rounder, in the Bayside Bee Class over the triangular course of the Bayside Yacht Club in Little Neck Bay yesterday afternoon, Frederick Smith had a narrow escape from drowning. His little yacht struck a rock near the Great Neck shore and upset. Mr. Smith, who was at the helm, swam overboard, but he suffered no ill effects. He reached a nearby boat and returned to shore. U. and collegiate champions competed before 8,000 peo¬ ple at the track and field meet in Gien Park yesterday, held under the auspices of the City of Yonkers, in honor of the opening of the new athletic field. The best performance was contrib¬ uted by Alan Helfrich, of the New York A. C, metropolitan junior and senior 880-yard champion, in the 1,000-yard run handicap. Startinc from scratch with Homer Baker. Helfrich immedi¬ ately went out after the leaders and after a lap and a half had overtaken all but four of them as he rounded the last turn he started to sprint and forced Baker to quit. Helfrich entered the home stretch a scant yard behind Gaskell, unattached, who started from the 25-yard mark. Gaskell held his advantage until ten yards from the finish, when Helfrich swept by with a wonderful burst of speed, to win by a yard. Ray Georgl, of the New York A. <"., won the 100-yard dash from the 2ba¬ yard mark. Tat Flynn, Paulist A. C, and Ivan Dresser and Johnny Simmons, of the New York A. Zilph BreezesHome in FrontIn Yacht Race

J. E. Hayes's 40-Footer Out¬sails Rowdy in Regalta onSound by I Min. 44 See.

It was a fortunate thing for theyachtsmen who gathered off the Larch-mont Yacht Club yesterday that it wasthe thirty-ninth annual regatta of thoorganization. Being tho annual race

and not tho usual week-end brush, thestarts wero made nt noon. At thathour a fresh northwest breeze was

blowing. '.The wind held until prac¬tically all of. the classes finished, giv¬ing the fifty-three yachts that came tothe line one of the best races of theyear. It then died out completely.

If anything, there was just a littlebit too much breeze when the racecommittee) established the line offLarchmont breakwater. There was somuch breeze that the .'50-fnoter Adois, the property of Fred B. Richards, brokelier throat halyard and could not start. That was not the worst accident. SallyIX, a handicap boat, which belongs toA. E. Black, capsized and had to betowed back to New Rochelle by JohnHanan's houseboat, which was near athand.Four forty-footers of the New York

Yacht Club had a good race over a

twenty-one-mile course made up of tworeaches and a beat home. The winnerwas Zilph, the property of J. B. Hayes. The craft boat H. S. Duell's Rowdy by1 minute and 4«t seconds. In the thirty-foot division of the same club Oriole, which belongs to S. C. Pirie, defeatedEdmund Lang's Banzai by 23 seconds. The summaries:

Washburn Takes TennisFinalFrom Throckmorton

4

Singles Winner Also Cap¬tures Honors in DoublesPaired With Mathey

By FkccJ HawthorneWatson M. Washburn accomplished

yesterday, in the final round of theSingles in the annual invitation lawntennis tournament of the Nassau Coun¬try Club, what S. Howard Voshell andDean Mathey, in turn, had failed todo the day before, namely, to defeatHarold A. Throckmorton.Washburn won at 2.6, 6.4, 6.1,

8.6, and although three sets to onewould in3icatc a thoroughly decisivevictory, I cannot help the feeling thathis mnrgin was far less than that. HadThrockmorton taken that fourth set(and he made a mighty bid for it), thechances were that he would have con¬tinued at the same superlative pacehe struck in the latter part of thematch and would have swept Wash-burn before him.And yet this is not perhaps quite

fair to yesterday's winner. Wash-burn played the kind of tennis thatonly the most aggressive, brillianttype of net game would overcome. Hewas making few errors from the backof the court and the ball from hisracquet bounded low, with a skiddingaction that made it doubly tricky tohandle effectively on the turf surface.Add to this that Washburn was deadlyon his passing shots when his opponentstarted for the net, and you have anidea of the task that confrontedThrockmorton. The New Jersey State champion was

very uneven in his work yesterday, and it was not until the fourth set, when Washburn led him at 5.0 ongames and held the service, thatThrockmorton came to sudden powerand began a tight that had the big;gallery tense.

Loser Shows ImprovementIt seemed that this apparently hope¬

less situation was the very stimulus, the spur, as it were, that Throckmor¬ton needed. Shots began to come offhis racquet that it had seemed impos¬sible for him to make before. Hecharged the net furiously and yet witha deadly effectiveness that had previ¬ously been lacking.

Washburn felt the change in his op¬ponent's game, saw his own safe leadslipping rapidly away, yet he refusedto let it upset him. After Throckmor¬ton had taken three games in a row, bringing the score to 5.3, there camea softening in Washburn's play. Hediscovered that many of his attemptedpassing shots were bein«: smothered

by Throckmorton's dazzling work Rtthe net. The New Jersey championwas closing in from the base line withgreat speed, being right on top of theball almost as soon as it came overthe net.Throckmorton rushed ahead, bringing

the games to 5.all by super-volleying,the ball slipping over the net at suchunplayable angles that Washburn was

often several feet out of position. Andlobbying did no good, for Throckmor¬ton was "killing" everything overheadwith a vengeance. Then the seemingly inevitable let¬

down came in the New Jersey man'sgame. Washburn broke through ser¬vice as his opponent sent three easyvolleys out of court. Throckmortonretaliated by taking the twelfth gamefor 6.all, only to drop the next at"love," as he made two errors on 'cross-court volleys and Washburn scoredwith two beautiful low volleys acrossfore-court.

Throckmorton Loses StrideIn the fourteenth game, Washburn

serving, the points reached 30.all. Onthe next service Throckmorton was notready to receive and caught the ball mhis hand. This seemed to shake himsufficiently to throw him off his stride, and he netted a backhand off service on

the next point, for the loss of thegame, set and match.Washburn's is the sixth name to be

engraved on the Nassau ChallengeBowl, previous winners being Mathev,1913; W. J. Clothier, 1914; Karl Behr.1915; Lindley Murray, 1918; W. MerrillHall, 1919.Paired with Ichiya Kumagae in the
