Water Vocabulary

Investigation 1

Water Observations

Earth Material

•A substance that makes up or comes from the earth

Property

• a characteristic of a material or an object, something that you can observe such as color, smell, and taste.

Water• a liquid earth material

Absorb

•When water soaks into another material

Bead• when water sits on top of a material in drops

Part 2 – Surface Tension

Surface Tension

•the ability of a liquid to pull itself together into a smallest possible area forming a sphere

Dome• when water sits on top of a material in drops

Content Inquiry•Water forms a dome on a flat surface.

•Surface tension makes water form a sphere on a dome.

•Soap added to water reduces its surface tension.

Part 3 – Water on a Slope

Slope

• a slanted surface

Flow• the movement of a liquid over a surface

Content/Inquiry

•Water flows down a slope.•Bigger domes of water move sown a slope faster.

•Water flows faster down a steeper slope.

Investigation 2

Water Observations

Part One

Building a Thermometer

Expand• Take up more space.

Contract

•Take up less space

Content/Inquiry

•Water expands when heated.

•Water contracts when cooled.

Part Two

Sinking and Floating

Sink• Materials that go to the bottom of a liquid

Denser• When a material or object is heavier

Float•When a material or object goes to the top of a liquid.

Less Dense

•When a material or object is lighter.

Content and Inquiry

•Warm water is less dense than room temperature water.

•Cold water is denser than hot water.

Part Three

Water as Ice

Content and Inquiry

• Water expands and turns into a solid when it freezes.

• Ice floats in liquid water, cold water from melting sinks.

Investigation 3

WATER VAPOR

Evaporates

•When water dries from an item

Water vapor

•When liquid water changes into a gas

Content and Inquiry

•Wet materials become dry when they are exposed to air.

•Water changes into a gas called water vapor, and goes into the air.

surface area

The area of a liquid exposed to or touching the air

Content and Inquiry

•More water evaporates from containers with a larger surface area.

•Less water evaporates from containers with smaller surface area.

seriate•to put objects in order by one property, like amount of water left

thermometer

•A tool used to measure temperature

Content and Inquiry

•More evaporation happens where temperatures were higher.

•Less evaporation happened where temperatures were cooler.

Condensation

•When liquid water on the outside of the cup comes from the water vapor in the air.

Water Cycle

Is the sequence of condensation and evaporation of water on earth, causing clouds and rain and other forms precipitation.

Content and Inquiry

•When water vapor in the air touches a cool surface, it CONDENSES into a liquid.

•Evaporation and condensation are part of the WATER CYCLE.
