JAMSHEDPUR : REDUCING WATER SHORTAGE THROUGH RAINWATER HARVESTING

• Jamshedpur, India a city with scarce ground water resources and uneven rainfall across the year established the rainwater harvesting system to reduce its water shortage.

• Rainwater harvesting in Jamshedpur located in local schools, residential colonies and housing complexes.

• Rainwater harvesting is a simple and cost-effective water preservation system with the advantages :• Ground water sources will be less challenged• Water levels in wells and bore wells in the

vicinity will be raised• Soil erosion will be reduced as surface run off

is reduced• Choking of storm water drains and flooding

of roads will decrease

SINGAPORE : ACTIVE LIVING WITH CLEAN WATER

• Marina Barrage is a large, spiral-shaped structure building with three important functions:• As a freshwater reservoir• A recreational urban space• A measurement to prevent flooding in this

low-lying area• Marina Barrage built across the 350 m wide

mouth of the Marina Channel and has nine steel gates which can be raised and lower as required.

• This building has a green roof that helps lower the temperature indoors and reducing the need for air conditioning and a 1200 m2 photovoltaic cell array /solar panels to generate electricity as the building’s external power supply.

CLEVELEYS : TAKING STEPS AGAINST FLOODING

• Cleveleys a seaside town in north-west england was under the most risk to flood. But Cleveleys exploited its unique opportunity to entirely renovate its water front with not only to protect against floods, but at the same time to enhance the quality of its pedestrian promenade.

• The main challenge is to design the new defence construction that protect the waterfront from flood waters and storm spray without blocking views from the high street.

• The solutions is a wave of stairs which lap back and forth from one area of public space to the others. The stairs themselves act as a flood stop by breaking the wave swell and pushing water back to the sea. At the same time, the stairs form a place where people can sit and engage in the activities of both beach and promenade

CONCLUSION

• THE BEST PRACTISE CASES MENTIONED ABOVE ARE THE EXAMPLE OF THE STRATEGY IN WATER MANAGEMENT COMBINE WITH THE AMENITY FOR PUBLIC.

• EACH URBAN CITY HAS ITS CHALLENGE TO FACE RELATE TO MANAGE THE WATER FOR SUSTAINABILITY. BUT WITH SIMPLE AND ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY IN DESIGN, STRUCTURE AND PROCESS IT CAN CHANGE THE CHALLENGE TO OPPORTUNITY IN DEVELOPING THE SMART AND SUSTAINABLE CITIES.
