  • Only TDW offers a full range of live pipe modification capabilities that allow vital water and waste water services to remain uninterrupted during all types of pipe system alterations while systems are under flowing and pressurized conditions. As the innovator and creator of STOPPLE plugging technology and the industry leader in hot/wet tapping systems, TDW has been installing or replacing line segments and valves on large concrete, steel, ductile and cast iron piping systems and providing field services associated with these disciplines since the 1950s.

Maintaining a continuous water supply and uninterrupted waste water disposal capabilities is a crucial concern for municipal and private entities the world over. The loss of clean potable water for any length of time adversely impacts fire protection services, hospitals, schools, nursing homes and commercial/industrial facilities. Shutting down and draining water systems for repair only adds to time delays and expense due to bacterial infiltration and subsequent special procedures to recertify a clean water supply.

Likewise, waste water systems are subject to severe environmental limitations regarding the disposal of liquids and solids that may result from the need to repair or alter a pipe system. Making pipe system modifications under full operational, flowing and pressurized conditions eliminates downtime and the associated problems resulting from repairs made during system shutdowns.

Live pipe modification technology from TDW assures continued line flow during the following activities:

Line repair Valve replacement Branch connections Line relocations

    TDW Live Pipe Modification Technology

    1. Two STOPPLE fittings are installed on the pipe.2. SANDWICH valves are installed on STOPPLE fittings.3. Tapping machine makes taps through both STOPPLE

fittings.4. STOPPLE plugging machines are installed with the option

of a temporary bypass.5. Plugging heads are lowered into sealing position, diverting

flow through with the option of a temporary bypass.6. With the flow stopped or diverted via the optional bypass,

workers cut and remove the isolated section.7. Once the new section is tied in, the plugging heads are

retracted, returning full flow to the main.8. The plugging machines and optional bypass lines are

removed.9. Completion plugs are set in the STOPPLE fittings and the

    SANDWICH valves are removed.

Action Sequence for a Tapping and Plugging Job Using a Temporary Bypass to Maintain Flow:

No More Downtime. As the worlds most trusted provider of integrated piping maintenance,

modification and repair capabilities for a full range of applications,

TDW delivers customized water and wastewater solutions specifically de-

signed to optimize performance, reduce costs and make downtime

    a thing of the past.

    Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

Problem: The need to expand the capacity of the Las Vegas area potable water delivery system.Solution: TDW performed two record-breaking, 102-inch taps in the 120-inch I.D./142-inch O.D., steel reinforced concrete pipe with 11-inch wall thickness using a TDW Model 2400 Tapping Machine.

Result: The addition of one new 180-inch line to the existing 120-inch water main running from Lake Mead.

Location: Baltimore, Maryland Problem: The need to tie in their 96-inch Southwest Diversion wastewater main into a new Grit Removal Facility at the Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant. The plant receives an average flow of 70 MGD and shutting down the main while making the new con-nection was simply not feasible. Solution: After successfully completing 60-inch taps, TDW Services installed two 60-inch by 96-inch folding head STOPPLE Plugging Machines. The folded plugging heads were lowered through the 60-inch openings where the plugging heads openedand created positive seals against the walls of the pipe. Result: A 200-foot section of the 96-inch wastewater line was isolated allowing a temporary 60-inch bypass to be installed to maintain flow while the main was being tied into the new Grit Removal Facility.

Location: New York City Problem: The Manhattan Pumping Station owned and operated by New York Citys Department of Environmental Protection pumps sewage volumes ranging from 170 MGD to 400 MGD. Faulty 60-inch suction gate valves were preventing maintenance service to main sewage pumps 1 and 2, which meant the possibility of a 96-hour shut down and the dumping of raw wastewater into the Hudson and Lower East rivers while lines were bypassed so that valves could be replaced. Solution: TDW Services performed hot tapping and plugging that successfully isolated a 10-foot section of 42-inch pipe and allowed valve replacements to take place. Result: Valve replacement took place without wastewater discharge into environmentally sensitive areas. Because the TDW plugging process allowed the pumping station to continue processing waste-water, there was additional time to replace what was discovered to be an excessively worn section of pipe.
