Introduction

A water bottle is a container used to holdwater or other beverages for consumption. Itallows an individual to transport and carry abeverage from one place to another.

A water bottle is usually made of plastic, glass,or metal.

Requirement

Bottled Water Issues:

• Safety

• No chlorine taste or odor

• Commodification of water

• Environmental impact

• Energy consumption

• Disposal of waste bottles

Material Selection

Some of the advantages of PET containers are:

• Flexibility in design • Superior clarity • Easy to handle •Pure, inert and light weight

Manufacturing Process

• The Process Step by Step:

• Drying of PET

PET absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. This must be removed by a dehumidifyingdrying process before processing.

• Plasticizing the PET

Dried PET pellets are compressed and melted by a rotating screw.

• Injection Molding the PET Preform

Molten PET is injected into the injection cavityand cooled rapidly to form a “preform” (Thetest-tube-like form from which bottles areblown is known as a preform).

• Heating the PET Preform

The temperature of the preform is adjusted to the correct profile for blowing.

• Stretch Blow Molding the PET ContainerThe hot preform is simultaneously stretched and blown into a shaped blow mold to form a tough, lightweight container.

• PET Container/Bottle Ejector

The finished container is ejected.

Label

Label Material

• Laminated paper labels

• Polypropylene labels

Printing Techniques for Labels

• Ink Jet

• Laser Printing

Cap

• Bottle caps are made not out of PET plasticbecause that would make the separationfrom the bottle impossible, PET does notfloat, so the caps have to be HDPE, PP orother plastic that is less dense than water, thus making the separation process possiblewhen the bottles are recycled.
