Water is our element.

Today, 800 million people around the world still have

no access to clean drinking water and even in the

industrialised nations, water as source of nutrition

is becoming an increasingly precious item. The re-

asons for this development are not only climate-re-

lated, but also due to environmental problems and

shrinking ground water reserves. Accordingly, water

treatment and wastewater purification, as well as

new technologies for water reuse and recycling, are

of growing significance gobally.

WABAG has dedicated itself to taking these challen-

ges with a range of problem solutions, which is both

comprehensive and highly advanced. With our inno-

vative technologies and services we make a sizeable

contribution to the provision of secure water supply

and wastewater treatment in both the municipal and

industrial sectors. The know-how that we put into

Guaranteeing top quality drinking water.

In many locations, a secure drinking water supply in

the desired quantity and quality is impossible without

the use of the latest technology. Specific technolo-

gies are employed in line with the source of the water

and the extent of its pollution.

WABAG has established itself as an ideal partner for

this communal challenge with an extensive selection

of chemical, physical and biological processes for the

treatment of surface and ground water. Our leading

technological competence is underpinned by a high

degree of process know-how and a profound under-

standing of customer needs. We engineer complete

plants, which guarantee safe adherence to the re-

quired parameters, are designed to accommodate

future developments and are characterised by high

levels of technical reliability.

Meeting the most modern requirements

WABAG is pushing ahead with the development and

use of technologies that conserve resources by me-

ans of modern concepts for energy recovery. These

incorporate small-scale hydropower plants combined

with drinking water treatment, and wherever appli-

cable, plants that can be operated gravimetrically.

In addition, our modern plants are equipped with

intelligent, self-regulating automated systems that

guarantee optimum operation and reduce the

operational service requirement and expenses to a

minimum.

Elimination of micro-pollutants

The company has also evolved advanced proces-

ses for the safe removal of specific micro-pollutants

from drinking water, which utilise advanced oxidation

(ADOX®) and oxidation processes in combination

with ceramic membranes (CERAMOZONE®).

Groundwater

The quality of ground and spring water is increasingly

subject to the negative influences of anthropogenic

substances, agricultural pollution and the growing

presence of chlorinated hydrocarbons. WABAG has

developed and optimised technologies, which are

specifically designed for ground water treatment. We

offer top processes, ranging from biological denitrifi-

cation (BIODEN®) and advanced oxidation (ADOX®),

to membrane technologies (MF, UF, NF, RO, EDR).

Surface water

As a rule, multi-stage treatment processes are re-

quired to make certain that drinking water obtained

from surface sources is suitable for human consump-

tion at all times and does not cause any problems

with regard to storage and network distribution. We

have complete mastery of these multi-barrier sys-

tems, which derives from the experience gained du-

ring innumerable projects. Optimum solutions using

conventional processes and in combination with ad-

vanced technologies such as membrane filtration,

guarantee high levels of flexibility and first class wa-

ter quality.

To safeguard our water.

Municipal wastewater treatment

Technological progress is currently expanding the

possibilities offered by traditional environmental protection.

In the municipal wastewater sector, the ecological focus is

on water protection and wastewater reuse, which adds up

to a need for the highest possible degree of wastewater

purification.

WABAG provides complete, state-of-the-art plants for just

this purpose. We offer the best possible individual solutions

for every requirement, from carbon to nutrient removal.

As key technologies, we employ one- and two-stage

activated sludge processes, biofiltration (BIOPUR®), moving

bed biology (FLUOPUR®) and membrane bioreactors

(MARAPUR®).

Conventional processes with one- or two-stage activated

sludge systems, which include our two-stage Hybrid™

process and SBR technology, are used as standard solutions

for average to high cleaning requirements. Biofiltration is

employed as an alternative or supplement, whereby this has

proved to be especially advantageous where space is at a

premium and stringent requirements exist with regard to

integration into the surroundings. This in-house developed

fixed bed technology also impresses through maximum

process stability and efficiency.

The advanced MARAPUR® process, which has been

employed successfully in numerous plants, is based on a

combination of modern membrane filtration technology

(ultrafiltration) with the proven activated sludge process.

MARAPUR® stands out due to a combination of enormous

cleaning capacity and comparatively low operating costs.

Due to an outflow that is solid-free and contains low levels

of bacteria and microbes, the process makes water reuse

possible even in the case of stringent requirements.

Sludge Treatment & Energy Recovery

For WABAG, sludge treatment is an integral part of efficient wastewater treatment. In addition, the anaerobic stabilisation

of sewage sludge can secure an ecologically and economically advantageous supply of energy through the use of biogas.

Large wastewater treatment plants are thus able to cover up to 100 per cent of their power needs.

Securing water as a production factor.

Boiler feed water and condensate treatment

Boiler feed water is obtained from a wide range of raw

water sources. The related treatment processes are

tailor-made to match the respective raw water composi-

tion and the required boiler feed water quality.

The major processes involved consist of make-up wa-

ter treatment (e.g. with the process steps pre-treatment

and demineralisation with silica removal), condensate

polishing (e.g. with the process steps filtration, cation

exchange and mixed bed filtration), thermal and chemi-

cal degassing.

In industry water is required that corresponds with the

differing needs of respective processes (power gene-

ration, cooling, etc.). Therefore, a secure water supply

in terms of both quantity and quality is of enormous

importance to industrial enterprises. Technically opti-

mised, cost-effective water management systems make

an important contribution to successful, long-term eco-

nomic strategy.

WABAG supplies the correct individual concepts and

solutions for this purpose. With our compre hensive

competence portfolio, we cover virtually every need

from conventional processes to high-performance sys-

tems (e.g. membrane processes). We attach special va-

lue to reliable, low-maintenance systems that offer high

economy.

Meeting the highest environmental standards.

Industrial wastewater contains a diversity of impurities

and therefore for this reason alone, its treatment cons-

titutes a special task. In addition, effluent standards are

constantly being tightened up. Therefore, in practical

terms the treatment of industrial wastewater demands

an extensive knowledge of process technologies and

their economic combination.

Due to the experience gathered during numerous pro-

jects, our engineers know how to fulfil customer requi-

rements and mandatory stipulations in full. The aim is

to achieve a perfect combination of efficiency and eco-

nomy. Naturally, this not only involves a focus on invest-

ment expenditure, but also the minimisation of running

costs during the plant life cycle.

Innovative and flexible

In the case of biological, anaerobic wastewater treat-

ment we employ conventional processes and space-

saving, high-performance reactors. We have completed

a large number of large-scale plants on the basis of

the world’s most frequently used UASB process. Other

systems are also utilised in accordance with the charac-

teristics of the wastewater, e.g. the activated sludge

process or our high-performance BIOPUR® system for

less polluted water. In the case of maximum cleaning re-

quirements (e.g. water reuse and recycling) we employ

membrane processes with submerged or external mem-

branes, and if required, cleaning phases such as reverse

osmosis and ion exchange that go even further.

Our team has designed and implemented waste water

treatment plants for customers from a variety of indus-

trial branches, including aerobic and aero bic/anaerobic

plants for the food industry, membrane bioreactor sys-

tems (MARAPUR®) for the chemical industry and waste-

water reuse schemes for diverse branches.

Saving energy and costs

Desalination plants separate sea and brackish water

into two flows consisting of a freshwater stream (con-

densate in thermal processes, permeate in reverse os-

mosis) and a stream with a high salt concentration (brine

or concentrate). Every desalination technology requires

energy for this separation process, which is supplied to

the system by thermal or mechanical means. Our com-

prehensive know-how ensures maximum energy effici-

ency and hence economy in this regard.

MED — XXL

In WABAG’s newly developed XXL™-MED systems,

which have capacities of up to 45,000 m3/d and line, all

the preheaters are enclosed in an extremely compact

manner. This design not only prevents heat losses, but

also guarantees optimised operations.

Optimum pre-treatment

As a systems supplier, we provide the required in- and

outflow structures and place a special emphasis on ef-

ficient pre-treatment. In this connection, apart from con-

ventional filtration technologies, highly effective micro-

and ultrafiltration systems are employed.

Sustainability through water reuse.

In view of the limited availability of water and the ne-

cessity of preserving existing resources, the use of wa-

ter recycling concepts within the scope of sustainable

water management strategies is of enormous impor-

tance. Water recycling increases availability to private,

commercial, agricultural and industrial consumers and

also enhances the security of supply. Therefore, it is of

special significance in arid and semi-arid regions.

In recent years, WABAG has carried out a series of pro-

jects for water reuse and recycling for both municipal

and industrial purposes. In the industrial sector, we

have planned and completed wastewater reclamation

plants to the complete satisfaction of customers in the

petrochemical and steel industries, textile and chemical

industries as well as for thermal power plants. In addi-

tion, we have also realised the world’s only direct po-

table reuse plant for the conversion of wastewater into

drinking water in Windhoek/Namibia, an achievement

of which we are especially proud.

Systematic efforts in the name of progress.

We believe in the power of innovation and invest

in technologies that point the way to the future.

As a progressive company, we constantly make every

effort to develop and implement inventive solutions to

the benefit of our customers. To this end, we carry out

a great deal of R&D, whereby the current emphasis is

on the areas of membrane technology, the removal of

micro-pollutants, energy-optimised processes and ad-

vanced pre-treatment techniques.

If some twenty years ago, membrane filtration proces-

ses were still regarded as a technology of the future,

we have already established them as a state-of-the-art

separation method. To date WABAG has completed

over 100 membrane filtration plants for the treatment of

fresh water and wastewater.

On the basis of this experience, the focus at present is on

the development of processes using optimised memb-

ranes, which above all are characterised by low life cycle

costs. In this connection, ceramic membranes are being

used for the newly developed CERAMOZONE® and

CERAMOPUR® processes.

The demand for brine concentrations with up to zero li-

quid discharge (ZLD) is increasing steadily. In this regard,

Vacuum Membrane Distillation is a promising techno-

logy, which has been tested successfully for various in-

dustrial applications.

Another important task is the safe removal of micro-pol-

lutants from pre-treated, municipal wastewater and con-

taminated groundwater. Outstanding test results have

been achieved with new processes employing ozone

and activated carbon (CARBOPUR®, PACOPUR®).

One highlight of WABAG’s R&D activities is provided by

the development of MICROPUR®, a new technology for

advanced, mechanical pre-treatment. When this fine sie-

ving is employed upstream of a membrane bioreactor

(MICROPUR-MBR®), the related technology guarantees

secure and stable system operation. Moreover, through

its use for pre-treatment prior to a conventional activa-

ted sludge process (MICROPUR-CAS®), the required

activated sludge tank volume is reduced significantly,

which results in lower investment costs. Following suc-

cessful large-scale testing, the first MICROPUR-MBR®

system has been installed at the Ujams industrial waste-

water reclamation plant in Windhoek, Namibia in 2014.
