Africa ’ s oldest independent republic, Liberia was founded in 1847 by freed American slaves. It is still recovering from a 14 year civil war that ended in 2003 which left the country without public telephone, electrical and water systems. Located on the western coast of Africa, Liberia is slightly larger than the size of Tennessee. Why Liberia needs access to fresh water *90% of all diseases are caused by unsafe drinking water. *5,000 children under the age of 5 die every day from water-related diseases. *Children affected by water-borne diseases commonly carry up to 1,000 parasites at time. *There is a proven relationship between extreme poverty and the lack of access to safe water. *Currently, Liberia is entering into the dry season, which forces women and children to walk up to 7 miles collecting water for their family. *Most importantly, Liberia has MILLIONS of people that have never heard of Jesus Christ. Provid-ing safe drinking water provides temporary physical relief and opens the door for missionaries to share the story of Jesus Christ...the eternal Water of Life.

Liberia's President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf was born in Monrovia, Liberia and became Africa ’ s first elected fe-male president in 2006. First Lady Laura Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at-tended her historical inauguration ceremony. A Harvard graduate, the new president ’ s tough-est challenge is to restore peace to a country that has suffered through 14 years of devastat-ing civil war. Her nickname, “ Iron Lady ” ac-curately describes her determined efforts to provide stability, expose corruption, and tackle the poverty of her homeland.
