WHAT IS WATER POLLUTION?• Water pollution

is any chemical, biological, or physical change in water quality that has a harmful effect on living organism or makeswater unsuitable for desired uses.

EFFECTS OF WATER POLLUTION Water pollution is the leading

worldwide cause of deaths and diseases, and that it accounts for the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily.

Around 1,000 Indian children die of diarrhea sickness caused by polluted water every day.

Some 90% of China's cities suffer from some degree of water pollution, and nearly 500 million people lack access to safe drinking water.

SOLUTION ON WATER POLLUTION• By properly disposing of all types of waste.• The proper management of mass waste disposal.• Effluent should not be discharged directly into water bodies.• Choosing organic pesticides in farms.• Municipal treatment plants should be installed• Strict enforcement of laws.• Awareness through various modes.

Ganges River PollutionThe levels of Coliform bacteria is over 2800 times the level considered safe by the W.H.O (world health organization).

The river directly and indirectly affects the largest population of any river in the world with over more than 420 million people who rely on it for food, water, bathing and agriculture.

And to cap it all as many as 10 million bathe in this river in a single day, for it is believed the Ganges is a holy river

In the holy city of Varanasi, the water of the Ganges is a "brown soup of excrement and industrial effluents“ – the contaminants are 120 times above the levels permitted for safe bathing

Ganges River Pollution•Approximately 1 billion litres of raw, untreated sewage are dumped in the river on a daily basis. The amount has more than doubled in the last 20 years.

Thousands of bodies are cremated on the banks of the river yearly with many being released into the river with hopes that their souls may have a direct path to heaven.

Hundreds Unwanted babies, cattle and other animal carcases are also dumped in the Ganges again with religious significance

• The major polluting industry along the Ganges is the leather industry from which chromium and other toxic substances leak into it

• And there are dozens of other industries that use the river as a convenient and cheap way to dispose of their hazardous wastes
