IntroductionDuring 1972 National Biocentric, Inc. developed a basic"

testing program for the evaluation of midwestern lakes and ':.streams. The design of sampling procedures, selection of

Conductivity: Conductivity is a measure of total ionspresent in waters. It gives no indication of the natureof the substances in the solution. An increase or de-crease in concentration of these substances will be re-flecte~ by an increase or decrease in conductivity.Conductivity is determined by the amount of electriccurrent conveyed through the water.Total Coliform: To determine total coliform, water sam-ples are incubated in selective media for 48 hours. Col=iform data are recorded as most prohable number per I n nml. Coliform organisms are an indication of human orani~al waste discharges.

    1. Secci disc: The maximum secci disc reading takenat the time of the year when the average secci discread.ings wer'ethe lowest was used , This reading wasgenerally taken during the month of August. Insome of the lakes in Northern !>1.innesota,the lowestsecci disc readings were ohtained in June/July.2. B.O.D.: The highest B.O.D. value obtained duringany of the sanpling times or in any samplinq sitewas used to obtain the water quality value number.3. ,Available phosphate: The hiqhest available phos-phate value obtained during any of the samplingtimes or in any sampling site was used to obtainthe water quality value number. ~ . - - -4. Ammonia: The hiqhest ammonia value obtained rluringany of the sampling times or in any sampling sitewas usen to obtain the water C'fualityvalue n1..lmher.5. Total Coliform: The highest nUr.Iberof coliformsobserved dur1ng any sampling time or site was usento determine the water quality value.

SaTTlplingSitesA - Inlet near Warsa",B - Beach on S.E. sideC Bridge be twe en Cannand NeIls Lakes

Cannon Lake represents the lake with the poorest ~vaterquality in Rice Connty. Nater clarity as reflected bysecci disc readings of less than one foot indicate thatalgal blooms were extensive in this .Lake , Farly summertemperatures of greater than ano 1;.,;rereecorded; B.O.D.levels were quite high in the spring, possibly as a re-sult of material carried down the river and depositenin Cannon Lake. A particularly hiqh B.O.D. level wasfound in the sample taken near the bridcre betHeen Cannonand Wells Lakes in the early summer. Phosphate levelswere quite high, particularly the sample taken off theswi~~ing beach during the winter. AMmonia levels were.quite high though they did decrease later on in the summer.O f particular interest is the sample taken off the swimmingbeach area in the ''linterand in the spring. Coliform levelswere relatively high throughout the perLod of this e"alu-ation, the highest level recorden near the bringe on theout le t of Cannon LaJ:e in th e late suJTtr . te:! :". The conduc tL v ievlevels in Cannon Lake were higher than any other lake inRice County. This reflects the presence of ~inerals inthe lake, possibly as a result of run-off and other sourceshaving high mineral content.

    River System in Rice County

The water quality in the Cannon and Straiqht River Systemsin Rice County is poor. A map show.i.nqsamplinqsites onthe river system is iricluaed at the end of this report. The river system 'vas characterized by hLcrh nutrients andthe presence of coliforM bacteria. B.O.D. levels reachenvalues as hiqh as 12 mq/l, phosphate levels as hiqh asseven ppm and ~onia levels as high as 12 ppm wererecorded. Coliform bacteria levels as high as 72,nnn wererecorded and conductivity levels as hiah as l~nn wererecorded for this river systp~.The river system in Rice County seems to be greatly in-fluenced by the presence of the municipalities along itsbanks. The Cannon River, as it goes through l-10rristOlVJ1,increases in the level of coliforms founn in its water. The levels of coliform bacteria and the nutrient levelsdecrease until the river reaches Cannon Lake. At the out-fall of Cannon Lake there is again an increase in thenu-trient material ana there is a sham increase after theStraight River joins Cannon in down+own Faribault. TheStraight River has quite hiqh levels of nutrients andbacteria all the way from the point where it enters RiceCounty until it joins with the Cannon River in Faribault. There is a sharp increase in phosphate, ammonia ann B.O.D.levels just before the Straiqht River" joins the Cannon, possibly due to the presence of municiDal treat~ent facilitiesfor the city of Faribault, just ahove" this sampling point. The levels of nutrients and bacteria remain quite high fro~the junction of the Cannon and the Straight until theCannon leaves the county in Northfield. The nutrient and bacteria levels in Heath Creek are veryhigh near the source of the Creek 1n Lonsdale. These levelsdecrease as the creek qoes through Union Lake and onto theCannon River in Northfield. The nutrient levels in HeathCreek are still quite high at the point of junction with theCannon River in Northfield. The data from the river system re.f Lect;the impact of mun Lc Lpalities on the watershed system in Rice County. Attentionshould be given to the adequacy of the municip?l treatmentfacility now in operation with emphasis on their contribu-tion to the water quality of the river system.
