WATERThree fourth of the Earth’s surface is covered

with water.It is one of the most important natural

resource.All living things depend on water.It is also used in household purposes like

cleaning, cooking, washing, drinking, bathing etc.

IMPORTANCE OF WATERMost of the water found on earth is not fit for

drinkingOnly about 3% of fresh water is found on

earth.Rain is an important source of fresh water.We get rainfall for only 2-3 months.We should save water.

SOURCES OF WATERRain is the main source of water. It fills up theRivers, lakes, ponds, streams, wells which are

the other important sources of water.Wells- are used mainly in villages. Wells

supply underground water.Tubewells- it has a tube or a pipe fitted to an

underground source of water. An electrical or diesel pump is used to pump the water.

CANALSCanals are small channels through which

water from rivers or dams are diverted to the fields.

They are dug to take water to where there is water shortage.

Example – the Indira Gandhi canal.

DAMSDams are barriers constructed on rivers.They stop the flow of river water and store it

in a reservoir.They help in controlling floods.Water stored is used for irrigation.It is also used to produce energy.Helps in development of fishing and

navigation.It is also called the multipurpose river valley

project.

RAIN WATER HARVESTING Rain water harvesting is process of storing

and collecting rain water.This stored water is used for drinking,

irrigation etc.It is usually done in the areas where there is

scarcity of water.
