WATERBORNE ADVANTAGES
ENVIRONMENT
The EU Solvent Emission Directive 1999/13/EC (SED)has imposed a strict limit of less than five tonnes of sol-vents emitted annually into the atmosphere for any cus-tomer - in force since October 2007
HEMPEL’s waterborne products fully comply with the new regulations and provide numerous combinations and solutions for reducing Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions.

LONG LASTING PROTECTION

A 7 year inspection report shows that HEMPEL water-borne products have stood up to all challenges and proves that they offer outstanding protection to all metal structures. GENSTAR, one of the biggest con-tainer leasing companies in the world over the past decade, requested waterborne products for its con-tainers. HEMPEL supplied HEMUDUR ZINC 18560, HEMUDUR 18500 AND HEMUCRYL 58030 for an ap-plication in India, under tough conditions. GENSTAR
was impressed with the gloss of the topcoat, but also the coating performance, which was performing on par or better than the solvent borne system. An inspection of the containers 7 years later proved the long lasting protection offered by HEMPEL’s water-borne products. The overall appearance was still very good with high gloss. The pictures below act as the best evidence.

By using waterborne coatings you can further obtain:
Reduced exposure to solvents for all people working with waterborne paints
Elimination of explosion and fire hazards
Electricians & welders can work close to the paint area
Other activities in the vicinity can proceed without being affected by the paint application (eg. in commercial buildings)
All tools can easily be cleaned with water from the tap
Water is used for dilution
Lower insurance rates can be obtained
A practical example comparing Solvent Borne systems with a common Waterborne system:
* All waterborne paints supplied by HEMPEL are FREE of lead and chromates.

WAGONY SWIDNICA
One of the biggest cargo railcar producers in Poland, Wagony Swidnica, and HEMPEL Poland have been closely cooperating for many years on a number of projects, such as rail cars for
wood transportation, coal wagons and tank car projects. Strict environmental regulations and the request for high quality, certificates and fast production, led Wagony Swidnica to use waterborne coatings in 2003. Since 2003, HEMPEL Poland has met all their re-quirements and has steadily been supplying Wagony Swidnica with one, two and three-coat waterborne systems or hybrid systems, together with advanced technical service support.
ALFA LAVAL
During the last five years, HEMPEL Sweden has secured a world-wide Key Supplier Agreement with Alfa Laval, one of the biggest global producers of heat exchangers. Alfa Laval requests paints that are compliant to the strictest VOC-regulations and suitable for their fast 24-hour online production. HEMPEL meets these demanding requirements by supplying fast drying waterborne products. Since 2002 HEMPEL has supplied more than 123.000 litres of waterborne epoxy coatings.
HEMPEL has more than 20 years of experience with waterborne paints. These coatings have been applied on a worldwide scale for various applications, such as bridges, windmills, rail cars, gas storage tanks, pipework installations, heat exchangers, etc.

WATERBORNE REFERENCESWATERBORNE CASE STORIES
HELLENIC PETRELEuM
In 2002, Hellenic Petreleum S.A., the biggest Greek refin-ery, built a new polypropylene plant in Thessaloniki, the first of its kind in the Balkan region. This large-scale proj-ect was based on an EXXON specification, requiring ap-plication of waterborne products to areas such as piping, tanks, spheres, steel constructions etc. HEMPEL (Hellas) was chosen as the most suitable coating partner and sup-plied approximately 110.000 litres of waterborne paints. All structural steel and tanks were externally protected by water-borne acrylics, whereas high temperature piping was coated using water-borne inorganic zinc silicate.
