Metro station development to reinvigorate WaterlooA joint venture between John Holland and Mirvac will deliver the Sydney Metro Waterloo integrated station development, which includes the new Waterloo metro station and the Waterloo Metro Quarter.

John Holland has been contracted to design and build Waterloo Station, so it is ready for the City & Southwest metro services when they start in 2024.

The station will be built in the already excavated area which runs along the Cope Street side of the Waterloo site between Wellington and Raglan streets. This work will involve building station structures, the platform and concourse, escalators and fitting out the new station.

Mirvac and John Holland will both deliver the Waterloo Metro Quarter which will have three high-rise and two mid-rise buildings above and

next to the new station. The buildings will have a mix of residential, commercial, retail, affordable and social housing, student accommodation and community facilities.

The commercial building, retail and community facilities will ensure the precinct is activated and lively during the day and supporting the local economy, when residents and students travel to work, university or colleges.

The Waterloo Metro Quarter will be a catalyst for significant urban renewal bringing new opportunities for work, living and transport connections.

Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project. It will transform Sydney, delivering more trains and faster services for customers across the network.

Planning stepsA concept plan for the Waterloo integrated station development was approved in late 2019 after public consultation.

The State Significant Development applications for the detailed design for the new Waterloo Metro Quarter are currently being prepared, along with a modification to the approved concept. The new plan for a commercial office building at the northern end of the site has seen the structure lowered significantly and redesigned. This will reduce overshadowing, meet strong demand for modern commercial premises in the area and activate the public domain.

The planning applications will be lodged later this year with the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. The community will have an opportunity to comment on the plans during the exhibition period.

Plans for the metro station were approved in early 2017. A Station Design and Precinct Plan is being prepared which outlines how the station will integrate with the Metro Quarter through the building designs, place-making and landscaping.

Station construction to start soonJohn Holland will take over the Waterloo site from the tunnelling contractor in early August 2020 to start preparing to build the new metro station. Early work will include setting up the site with worker facilities and equipment, relocating utilities and bringing in a power supply.

It will be necessary to extend the existing hoarding onto the footpath and part of the road on Cope Street, to make room for heavy vehicles, including concrete trucks. This will ensure the safe movement of trucks both on and around the site. Noise will also be reduced as the trucks will be able to move in one direction without the need to turn around or reverse in a small area.

On-street parking and footpath access next to the site in Cope Street will need to be removed to make way for the hoarding changes and new work, however the street will remain open to one-way traffic heading south and parking will still be available on the side opposite the site.New access gates will also be installed to support the new phase of work.

Major work to construct the station structure is due to begin in October. One of the first activities will be installing 96 piles on the bottom of the station excavation,

followed by waterproofing. A concrete slab will then be poured to form the basement floor before several levels are built as part of the future station buildings.

Two tower cranes will be set up on the site later in the year to help with building the external and internal walls within the station area.

The construction team will work to minimise impacts, wherever possible. The community will be kept informed about upcoming activities throughout all stages of the project, so they know what to expect.

Other works at Waterloo

Sydney Metro will have another contractor working at the Waterloo site at the same time as John Holland builds the metro station.

Systems Connect, a joint venture between CPB Contractors and UGL Limited, will also be using the site from August this year. Systems Connect is delivering line-wide work, which includes installing metro rail track, power and other systems, to turn the new tunnels into a working railway.

Work at the Waterloo site will mainly involve bringing in and welding together the steel rails that will form the new metro track.

More detailed information will be provided to the community before work begins.

Farewell from tunnelling teamThe Tunnel and Station Excavation team will soon complete their work at the Waterloo site. The JohnHolland CPB Ghella team would like to say thank you to the entire Waterloo community for their interest in the project, joining them at open days and ongoing support during the tunnelling work.

Open days at the Waterloo site gave the community an opportunity to see and learn more about the tunnel boring machines

Activities at the Waterloo station site included demolition of multiple buildings followed by investigations to uncover Waterloo’s heritage before the excavation of the new underground station. Later, two tunnel boring machines Nancy and Mum Shirl passed through the site to deliver twin tunnels to the heart of the CBD.

Artefacts found during heritage investigations

The tunnelling contractor is proud to have delivered work for the new metro station and the tunnels which will give the Waterloo community new connections to the CBD and beyond.
