Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is one of the premier universities of national importance. It came into ex-istence at Aligarh in 1920 during the Khilafat and Non-cooperation movement in response to Gandhi-ji’s call to boycott government supported education-al institutions. JMI has a multi layered educational system. It has Nine Faculties and more than 27 Cen-tres for Research of Excellence. Jamia has also started several inter-disciplinary research centers that have given an edge to it in terms of critical re-search. The story of growth JMI from a small insti-tution in the pre-independence India to a central uni-versity located in New Delhi is a saga of dedication, conviction and vision of a people who worked against all odds and saw it growing step by step. They “built up the Jamia Millia stone by stone and sacrifice by sacrifice,” said Sarojini Naidu, the nightingale of India.

Department of Geography, Jamia Millia Is-

lamia, New Delhi

The Department of Geography was established in 1971. Since then, the department has acquired dis-tinction in teaching and research as well as for dis-semination of geographical knowledge both at the national and international level. The department offers B A/B Sc (H), MA/MSc and Ph. D. Programmes in Geography, PG Diploma in Remote Sensing & GIS Applications, PG Diploma in Disaster management( Self Finance and Evening) and M.Sc. in Disaster management and Climate Sustainability Studies. The Department has been accorded status of FIST-1 by DST and SAP DRS-1 by UGC. The ISRO, Government of India not only recog-nized the department as one of the leading centres for teaching RS/GIS but also funded the enhance-ment of the DIP/GIS labs to promote applications of these techniques. Presently, there are about 400 students in the depart-ment studying at the undergraduate and postgradu-ate level and more than 40 students pursuing their Ph.D.. The thrust areas of the department are Regional De-velopment, Urban Geography, Environmental Stud-ies, Agricultural Geography, Population Geography, Gender Geography, Social Geography, Transport Geography and Urban Environment.

The faculty and research students are actively en-gaged in innovative research in varied field of geog-raphy. Publications by the faculty and research scholars in international journals with about one thousand five hundred of citations, is the testimo-ny.

Infrastructure

The Department has a well equipped geospatial la-

boratory with 30 computers, 10 handheld GPS, one

DGPS, five licenses of ArcGIS, 15 licenses of Erdas

Imagine , 02 Total Station, audio visual equipment

and lecture halls.

Lodging Facilities

The University has it own guest house with AC/non-AC rooms and has 24x7 wi-fi facility across the campus. accommodate 100 participants and re-source persons at a time.
