abound – whale watching tours, hiking, biking, scuba diving, fishing, beachcombing, boating, kayaking – you’re limited only by your imagi-nation.Ready for something new? The San Juan

islands are part of an archipelago extending intoCanadian waters. In all, including the Canadi-an Gulf Islands, there are over 450 islands athigh tide. Each of the San Juans has its own atmos-

instance, has the yacht mecca Roche Harbor aswell as the British and American Camps wherethe PigWar took place way back in 1859. Even-tually, the border dispute was mediated byKaiser Wilhelm I of Germany who came upwith a solution that the British and Americansreluctantly accepted.Take time for a drive out to Whidbey Island,

a destination in itself. Home toWhidbey NavalAir Station (“Pardon Our Noise – It’s TheSound of Freedom”), small towns and beauti-ful parks and lovely beaches are big attractions.A few stops of note: Deception Pass State

Park, Oak Harbor, Coupeville, Keystone Jetty. All in all, great places to linger at...

South of Bellingham’s his-toric Fairhaven district liesChuckanut Drive, a narrow, winding, madrona-lined roadthat skirts along the rocky hillsoverlooking the Georgia Straitand will lead you to La Con-ner and Anacortes.Along the way, the road

passes fine restaurants and artgalleries. You can enjoy foodand admire the view of thenorthern-most portion ofPuget Sound and the San Juanisland archipelago from thedeck at the Oyster Bar.Following Chuckanut south

leads to two of Skagit Valley’sbest-kept secrets: The nearlyhidden towns of Bow and Edi-son. There, one can samplefresh, organic bread in Edi-son’s Breadfarm bakery orpick up a wedge of organicSamish Bay gouda cheese ora local pinot grigio next door.Another popular spot is

Clayton Beach in LarrabeeState Park. Uncrowded, it hasbeautiful sandstone rock for-mations accessible by hikingor biking the Interurban Trail,

a 5.5-mile former railroadroute that connects Larrabeewith Fairhaven. The oldest community in

Skagit County, La Conner isalso certainly one of the mostpicturesque. Located on thebanks of the SwinomishSlough, it is listed on theNational Registry of HistoricPlaces and is a great place inwhich to eat, shop and wan-der.Just a short jaunt off I-5, La

Conner offers a quaint andculturally-diverse experienceto visitors. The town wasfounded in the early 1860s.John Conner ended up buyingthe trading post in 1869 towhich he added a post office. In 1870, he renamed the townfrom Swinomish to La Con-ner in honor of his wife,Louise A. Conner. The slough separates the

town from Fidalgo Island, connected by the RainbowBridge. It is a popular stoppingoff spot for boaters going toand from Whidbey Island. The town is still home to

The nicest way to arrive...farmers and fishers but thepopulation has grown toinclude artists, writers andretirees. For food, check outthe La Conner Brewery, or theRexville Grocery just south onBest Road.

FairhavenTravel back in time...South of downtown Bellingham, Fairhaven

once was a Northwest center for maritime tradeand commerce. That tradition lives on –Fairhaven is the southern terminus of the Alas-ka ferry as well as an Amtrak stop on the Van-couver to Seattle to Portland run.For those wishing to explore the San Juan

islands, Victoria/San Juan Cruises offers sail-ings in the summer. It’s also the southern ter-minus of the Alaska ferry. With kayakers, grizzled old men with equal-

ly grizzled old dogs, anxious families – this isn’t

the typical ferry journey.Fairhaven itself still retains much of its turn-

of-the-century maritime architecture and flavor. Many of the old buildings with their colorfuland intricate stonework have been restored andtrolley tracks still line the streets. Two other must-see stops are the Colophon

Cafe and Village Books. The bookstore is oneof Washington’s largest independently-ownedbookstores and is on the writer circuit so evenif you miss your favorite author’s talk you’ll like-ly be able to find an autographed book.

FAIRHAVEN

ATTRACTIONS:• Village Books, anationally known book-store featuresfrequent author talks.

• Outdoor cinema,Saturday nights on theVillage Green. Seewww.fairhaven.com forschedule.

• Have your phototaken with Dirty Dan,patron saint ofFairhaven.

• Walk almost on water,along Bellingham’s 1/4-mile Taylor AvenueBoardwalk.

Getting There:Take the Old FairhavenParkway exit off I-5 andhead west.

BellinghamEasy to visit but tough to leave...Considered one of the most livable small cities on theWest

Coast, Bellingham appeals to the casual visitor with a rangeof attractions from the physical to the cerebral. Hiking, bik-ing, and kayaking seem to be the summer outdoor activitiesof choice but you don’t have to stop there.First opened in 1927, the Mt. Baker Theatre is a beautifully

restored old-time theater. Check out www.mountbakerthe-atre.com for upcoming shows.Whatcom Museum of History and Art has four compo-

nents two of which feature contemporary art, and North-west Indian and Inuit exhibits. The third exhibit space changesregularly, displaying art and historical topics; the fourth is theWhatcom Children’s Museum, temporarily closed.

Western Washington University, situated near Fairhaven, has a beautiful, tree-lined campus. Particularly worthwhileis the campus’s world-class outdoor sculpture collection. On the west side of Bellingham lies Squalicum Harbor, a

year-round public moorage for more than 1,800 commercialand private boats. The harbor is home to one of the largestcommercial fishing fleets on the west coast.Just a little bit further down the road is Marina Square. A

busy collection of marine-related stores and businesses, restau-rants and shops, it’s very pleasant to stroll about on a sunnyday. Walk out to Zuanich Point to see the memorial to fish-ermen who have left for sea and never returned. Fly a kiteif you are so inclined.

The bay is the place to beon sunny summer days...

Located five miles south of Blaine, Birch Bay’s centerof activity is the tree-lined bay with its miles of sandy beach-es. This is a swimmer’s paradise – as the tide rolls in overthe sun-warmed sand, the water gets up to bathtub tem-peratures. Its smooth waters makes for great water skiingand wake boarding. But above all, Birch Bay is relaxing. When the tide goes out, you’ll see dozens of people with

shovels and pails out in search of razor and manila clamsdestined to be bathed in garlic and butter. With its mostlyflat terrain, Birch Bay is a great place for running andcycling. For a change of pace, after biking the bay, headinland for quiet country lanes and long distance views offields and sky.Dog lovers can come to Bark on the Beach July 26 for

fun and games for the pooch. Some of the events to lookfor during the summer are Discovery Days parade and thearts and crafts festival being held July 18 and 19. The paradeis a hoot – a real small town event that everyone enjoys. On Saturday, June 20 the sandcastle contest is held. Detailscan be found at www.birchbaychamber.com

BlaineOn the edge of Drayton Harbor and Semiahmoo Bay...Being on the border, Blaine is used to visitors arriving by

the scores. In recent years, it has spent much time and moneyto make the arrival worth the journey. Peace Portal Drive is the main drag and overlooks the har-

bor and Semiahmoo Bay. Two new waterside plazas havebeen constructed, one of which contains a sculpture of twowomen and a boy looking out to sea for the return of theirfishermen. Scattered around town and in Peace Arch StatePark are sculptures, which are part of the U.S. Canada PeaceAnniversary Association’s annual International Sculpture

Exhibit (www.peacearchpark.org). The biggest monument is, of course, the Peace Arch, stand-

ing on the border between Canada and the U.S. to com-memorate peaceful relations between Canada and the U.S.Running every weekend until Labor Day, the historic Plover

ferry runs across from Blaine Harbor to the SemiahmooResort, site of former salmon canneries. If you can, be in Blaine for the 4th of July. A small-town

parade and festival is great fun and the fireworks display issure to thrill people of all ages.

Ladner/TsawwassenSurrounded by the ocean and the river...Ladner and Tsawwassen, which means ‘looking

towards the sea’ in the Coast Salish language, sit in themiddle of the Pacific Flyway and the surrounding fields, wetlands and waterways comprise an important stopoverfor millions of birds on their annual migration. If you want to be busy, ‘downtown’ Tsawwassen and

Ladner will keep you busy. But once you’ve experiencedthe restaurants, boutiques, personal service establish-ments and supermarkets along 56th Street, BoundaryBay Regional Park offers you a great place to spot rareand not so rare species of birds. Trails wander throughtide and wetlands ending at Centennial Beach. This is agreat place for a swim or a picnic or a barbeque. LikeLadner, Tsawwassen is bordered by dikes, perfect forwalking, running, biking or even horseback riding. One can walk, run, ride or canter for 20 kilometers

one way if they wish. If you need to cool off, BoundaryBay is a great place to go for a swim. The sand flats goout for a half-mile and when the tide comes in on a sunnyday, the water is warmed to bathtub temperatures.Take the back route, Arthur Drive, into Ladner if you

can. The town of Ladner dates to 1868 when two broth-ers, Thomas and William Ladner, squatted on parcelsof land on opposite sides of the river. Ladner is a greatplace to get out and walk or bike.

LADNER &TSAWWASSENATTRACTIONS:• The George Reifel bird sanctuary in Ladner.

• Having the warmestswim north of California atCentennial Beach.

• Walking or riding thedike in Ladner andTsawwassen.

Getting There:Coming South on Hwy 99:After the George MasseyTunnel, take Hwy 17 exit toHwy 10 on the right forLadner. Continue south onHwy 17 until you see signsfor 56th Street on the leftfor Tsawwassen. Coming North: Take theHwy 17 exit, turn left at thelight and follow the directions above.

Wander the downtown area with its historic build-ings and a very compelling local museum. As men-tioned earlier, the entire delta region is an importantstopover on the Pacific Flyway. Millions of birds takea breather in the fields and water before flying north orsouth, depending on the season. One of the best places to see this amazing bird life

is at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary. Take River Road West, follow the signs and turn right for the bridge to West-ham Island. Keep your eyes open for a small park beforethe bridge if you’d like to take a small break. Quite often you’ll have a close up view of happy sea

lions sitting on fish processing docks or taking advan-tage of fishers hauling nets up in the river.

• Renting a bike fromPeddle Pushers and riding the Point.

Point RobertsRinged by water on three sides and Canada to the northOnly 4.9 square miles and just 1,200 permanent residents,

Point Roberts is a quirky kind of place that has attracted peo-ple from all over the world and hasn’t let them go.The Point hangs down from British Columbia and is about

three miles wide by two miles long. Much of the central por-tion is covered by forest with clearings on the beaches thatring the peninsula. On the east are the warm waters of Bound-ary Bay with its extensive sand flats while the south and westis bounded by Strait of Georgia. Immediately north of theborder is Tsawwassen. If you’ve timed it right, you’ll catch what the locals call

the “Orca show.” Point Roberts is home to two pods of killerwhales who are often seen as close as 10 feet off the beach

when salmon are running. There is also a ‘false killer whale’that shows up – kids on the dock have actually stroked itsback as it swims by. Check with the Lighthouse Park but thewhales usually show up around 3 or 4 p.m. Maple Beach has nearly one mile of sand flats which makes

for great crabbing and clamming and allegedly boasts thewarmest water north of California (it can get close to 80degrees in the late afternoon when the tide comes in). LilyPoint park, further south, makes a great place to picnic, aswim or just plain relaxing. Keep an eye out for eagles – there are a number of perch-

es and it’s not uncommon to see as many as 10-15 eagles ata time.
