Bonneted gate valves are designed and manufactured inaccordance with Bureau of Reclamation standards, alwayswith a rectangular geometry, which is generally located onbottom or mid-bottom water outlet conduits, embedded inconcrete with the exception of the actuator (fig.1). Its normalconfiguration includes a service Valve (downstream) and asafety valve (upstream) for maintenance purposes.

It is an fabricated and specially robust construction, the flushbottom design of which avoids the accumulation of solids, andthe absence of rubber seals avoids potential leakage over thelong term due to the rapid deterioration of this kind of material.

All ORBINOX bonneted gate valves are designed for thespecific service conditions of each particular case.

The structural evaluation is performed using the finite elementsmethod and CAD modelling systems.

The standards used in the evaluations are:

DIN 19704: Hydraulic Steel Structures. Criteria forDesign and Calculation.

DIN 19705: Hydraulic Steel Structures.Recommendation for Design, Construction and

Erection.Standards and design criteria of the Bureau ofReclamation (USBR) for sliding gates.

The body of the valve is designed as a self-resistant recipientwhich resistant to the design pressure without the assistance ofthe concrete.

The recess along which the gate moves is designed so that nodownstream depression zones are created. The upper and sidebody faces downstream are appropriately bevelled for thispurpose (fig.2).

A gate valve has the following elements:

GateBody and bonnetActuation cylinderBy-pass deviceVenting systeme

    Gate:

The gate is a robust part, made from either thick steel plate sheets

or from an fabricated structure, with a skin plate located on theupstream position.

The gate has seats on the sides, upper and lower faces. All ofsaid seats are bronze, with the exception of the bottom onewhich is made of stainless steel. Bronze sliders are located onthe front face of the gate which fit with the counter guides.Similarly, sliders are located for guiding the gate at the side.Wedges are also arranged on the front face in order toguarantee closure with little water pressure.

The gate has a 45 bevel and has the side and top horizontalseat facing in bronze, which are correctly adjusted andmachined in order to achieve the required tightness required.

The lower edge of the panel is machined austenitic stainlesssteel and sits upon a piece of the same material located on thebottom of the valve.

    Body and bonnet:

The body of the valve is designed as two fabricated sub unitsand are joined together along its vertical length using flatscrewed flanges.

The front body is formed by a short armoured section joined to theupstream part of the valve recess and its corresponding bonnet

section (or housing chamber). It includes the stainless steel counterguides and has a series of horizontal stiffeners. The fixture of thisbody to the conduit armouring is done using a flat flange.

The rear body includes the downstream part of the valve recessand bonnet and includes the sill, side and lintel seals alongwith the side guides, all of which are stainless steel, it alsoincludes the venting inlet. Stiffening and joining to the reararmour of the conduit is done using a flat flange.

The side seat facings, counter guides on the upstream facesand side guides at the bottom of the recess are made ofstainless steel and designed to go along the height of the bodyand bonnet.

The gate can be raised above the open position to the upperpacking change position when required (fig.4). The sealingsystem in this position guarantees the water tightness of theshaft and allows the packing to be changed whilst the valve isloaded.

Maximum admissable leakage for this type of valve is0.08 litres per second and linear meter of joint.

The aeration conduits are dimensioned is such a way thatmaximum depression does not exceed 2 mwc, for which airspeed is limited (max. 90 m/s) with the aim of avoidingexcessive load losses and air swirls in the conduits whichcould cause vibrations in the valve.

BUMODELOn the upper area, the bodies end in a robust flat flange forconnection with the bonnet cover.

On each valve there is a position indicator be means of astainless steel rod and an indication needle which signals theopening position of the panel on an indication strip fixed to thecylinder.

The bonnet cover closes both bodies and supports the cylinder. It is designed as a robust fabricated structure, formed by a thickplate with external ribs which support the coupling flange withthe cylinder support flange. The necessary parts for thecompression gland of the cylinder shaft and the gate positionindicator are located on it, along with a threaded outlet for thepurge tap.

    Actuation cylinder:

The actuation cylinder of the sliding valves is a double actingcylinder. It incorporates a position indicator which consists of aframe with an aluminium graduated strip and an indicationneedle moved by a stainless steel shaft, fixed to the panel andwhich moves vertically along the outside through the bonnetcover by means of a compression gland. There are threeposition indications on the indicator (open, closed and packingchange).

    By-pass device:

The by-pass device is comprised of a steel pipe, two gatevalves and a disassembly joint.

    Venting system:

Venting system is comprised of a collector which distributes theair uniformly through the upper area immediately behind thegate. The collector may be connected to pipes on the outsideor to air relief valves protected by their respective gate valves. The air relief valves used for the venting system are doubleaction.

This gate is normally actuated with a hydraulic cylinder due tothe high stresses required.

The hydraulic unit will normally be equipped with a doublemotor pump and an emergency manual pump. There is theoption of using oil / nitrogen accumulators for performingemergency operations.

The electrical cabinet has a PLC for programming the opening, closing and packing change maneouvres along with furthermaneouvres specific to each case.

Speak with our technicians for alternative actuation.

The "Bureau" type sliding gate valve is designed to supportwater loads of up to 150 mwc and speeds in excess of 25m/s.

The nominal forces for opening and closing the valve at thespecified speed will be determined as the algebraic sum of thecomponents of the forces applied, corrected by the applicablesafety factors in each case.

    CHMODEL

Valve normally used for closing and regulating bottom andintermediate water outlets of dams and reservoirs as well as aturbine bypass valve in hydroelectric power stations. The fixedcone valve (fig. 1) discharges directly into the open air as anextension of the bottom drainage conduit which is embeddedin the concrete body of the dam.

This valve releases a hollow cone shaped jet (fan or spray type jet).Upon contact with the air, the energy is dissipated by pulverisationand mixing with the air. The water is normally collecteddownstream in a stilling pool.

Cone valves are excellent regulation devices, since they canoperate at any partially open position and they havepractically no design load limitations.

The most common use for these valves is free discharge into theatmosphere, but they can also be adapted for submergeddischarges through the downstream wall of the dam.

The advantages of the hollow jet valves compared with othertypes of valves which have the same functions are notable: theyare light, simple, they have no cavitation or vibration problems, and are very easy to operate and maintain.

    2. DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS

All ORBINOX fixed cone valves are designed for the specificservice conditions of each particular case.

The structural evaluation is performed using the finiteelements method and CAD modelling systems.

The standards used in the evaluations are:

DIN 19704: Hydraulic Steel Structures. Criteria for

    Design and Calculation.

DIN 19705: Hydraulic Steel Structures.Recommendation for Design, Construction and

    Erection.

The valve has a high rate of discharge making it ideal formanaging large water flows (fig.2).

The amplitude of the jet constitutes a certain disadvantage, inspecial cases, above all in channel discharges, or dischargesin regions with cold winter temperatures where the areassurrounding the valve are exposed to frost and the fine dewsprayed out by the valve turns to ice. For this type of case theextension of the jet is limited using a tube with a larger

diameter (hood fig.3), or by installing the valve inside a loadrupture chamber which flows into a drainage channel. The useof hoods decreases the discharge rate by approximately 10%.

The water jet from the valve, due to its intense mix with the air, drags large volumes of air along with it. This must be closelyconsidered when placing a hood as the jet must be sufficientlyaerated through different openings on the hood.

A valve for regulation and discharge to the exterior, formedby a fixed cylindrical body upon which a cylindrical sleevewill slide concentrically to the body and lengthways.

A fixed cone valve has the following elements:

    BodySleeve or shutterDrive cylinders

Body:The body of the valve is formed by a stainless steel shell whichis machined on the outer side, with internal radial carbon steelribs welded on the shaft of the valve to a pipe which extendsdownstream where it is welded with the dispersion cone vertex. The visible parts of the radial ribs are covered in bronzeapplied by welding and subsequent machining, and are flushwith the external diameter of the tube which forms the body.

The valve has a drilled flange in accordance with standardsDIN (PN 10, PN16) and AWWA C207 Class "D" at theupstream end.

Around the base of the dispersion cone is the housing for theEPDM seat which is fixed to the body by a steel ring andstainless steel screws. The outer edges of the sleeve will sit on

this joint in the fully closed position.

Sleeve:The sleeve consists of a steel cylinder which has internalstainless steel rings that act as rollers and slide over theuncovered part of the ribs on the main body, in such away that the sliding action is always between stainlesssteel and bronze. On the upstream part of the sleeve thereis a watertight compression gland which slides on themachined stainless steel body of the valve. The contactsurface with the watertight joint is made from stainlesssteel. The ends of the cylinder shafts are joined to thesleeve.

If the valve has a fixed hood (for submerged discharge), thesleeve is manufactured in stainless steel and is machined onthe outside. The fixed hood, normally positioned in concrete, has a system of watertight joints against which the machinedouter part of the sleeve will slide.

Drive Cylinders:The standard valve actuation is obtained from two parallelhydraulic cylinders, mounted horizontally. They are doubleacting cylinders, with stainless steel shafts, treated with hardchrome. The normal operation pressure is between 60 and120 Bar.

The body incorporates a position indicator which is comprisedof a frame with a graded aluminium strip. The indicator needle

moves with the sleeve. There are two indication positions onthe indicator (open and closed).

There is an option for installing a internal position transducer(4-20mA) for remote valve regulation.

    4. ACTUATORS

This gate can be actuated manually, electrically andhydraulically (fig.4), although the application usuallyrecommended is the hydraulic actuator due to simplicity andhigh stresses required.

The hydraulic unit will normally be equipped with a doublemotor pump and an emergency manual pump. Nitrogenaccumulators can be used for emergency purposes.

The electrical cabinet has a PLC for programming the openingand closing maneouvres along with further maneouvresspecific to each case.

Butterfly valves constitute one of the most simple, robust andeconomical ways of managing flows in inlet and outlet conduits(fig.1).

Butterfly valves are used for emergency functions, and althoughin some exceptions, mainly with small diameter valves, theyhave been used to regulate flow, this operation method is notrecommended due to the high levels of turbulence, vibrationand possible cavitations which may occur on the valve ordownstream pipes.

The main use for these valves is in pressurized conduits athydro-power plants electrical plants, inlets and outlets, and for

closures in the event of emergency. In the majority of cases, butterfly valves are comprised of a steel box, which is acylindrical pipe with the same internal diameter as the conduiton which it is installed.

The advantages are mainly a result of the bi-eccentric closuregeometry, which largely eliminates joint-seat friction, andmakes the water flow seal the valve. It provides a continuousseal around the complete circumference and its robust designallows opening and closure in high heads.

    2. DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS

All ORBINOX butterfly valves are designed for the specificservice conditions of each particular case.

The structural evaluation is performed using the finiteelements method and CAD modelling systems.

Standards and criteria used for design and testing:

DIN 19704: Hydraulic Steel Structures. Criteria for Designand Calculation.

DIN 19705: Hydraulic Steel Structures. Recommendationfor Design, Construction and Erection.

    AWWA C-504-80.

AWWA M49 Butterfly valves: Torque Head Loss andCavitation Analysis.

The closure mechanism is a circular body, with ahydrodynamic lengthway section to create minimum flowdisturbance and pressure drop.

The butterfly valve is not very hydrodynamic in form whenoperating at partial aperture. Downstream, a separation zoneis formed where vibrations, swirls and cavitation may occur,

this can be clearly noticed as it produces intense sounds andpipes will vibrate. For this reason, the butterfly valves must not

be used for partial aperture in a permanent manner.

The butterfly seals against the seat in the body with a rubberstrip that is placed around the perimeter of the disc. Therotation shafts (bi-eccentric) remain outside of the central planeof the disc (fig.2), in order to prevent interference with therubber seals in these zones.

The rotation tendency is to close after a certain deviation of theopen position, due to the distribution of pressures caused bythe flow together with the bi-eccentricity of the shaft (fig.3). Thismeans that valves of this type can be closed even without theassistance of servo-motors, or in cases of power supply failure,by manual operation, which is extremely advantageous asthese valves are used as closure mechanisms in emergencysituations.

The actuation method which is usually used to operate thesevalves is an oil servo motor and counterweight system. Thissystem uses the force of gravity of a weight outside the valve, joined to the rotation shaft of the disc by a mechanical arm.The arm is also joined to the oil servomotor which allows thevalve to be opened, this in turn hydraulically or mechanicallylocks into the completely open position, which is the highestcounterweight position. The valve closure process begins by

    freeing the counterweight.

The closure time can be adjusted at will by regulating the oilflow of the servomotor cylinder, preventing water hammer inthe pipe.

It is also possible to operate the valve with an electro-mechanical actuator. Manual actuation may also be carriedout in cases of power failure.

When designing the operating mechanism of the valves, thefollowing two scenarios must be considered:

    1. Intake conduits with relatively low speeds

(< 5m/s) and high pressures: This is the case withpressurized conduits in turbines, where these valves aremainly applied as emergency devices, the resulting torqueon the disc shaft will be the main force needed to overcomethe friction forces on the shafts and seals; in this case, thetorque from the distribution of hydrodynamic pressure on thedisc will be minimal.

    2. Bottom and general discharges in high speedconduits in which the valves must be manoeuvredwith flow, under free discharge conditions: Thetorque needed to overcome the forces of friction on theshafts and seals is small in comparison with the torque

produced by the distribution of hydrodynamic pressures inthe butterfly (dynamic torque). This torque is magnified if the

valve is larger, and if the fluid speed is higher. For thisreason, on valves of a large size, a technical viability studyis required. See the figure where the required correction ofvalve robustness for the increase in speed. (Fig. 3)

MBMODELstainless steel. For large and/or high pressure valves, the maindisc is reinforced with another parallel plate joined by ribs

running lengthways in the direction of the water, forming a"biplane" type structure which is both very robust andhydrodynamic. The main deep disc is machined at the end inorder to house the special profile of the EPDM watertight seal. This seal is held by a ring secured with a stainless steel screw.

    Shaft:

The shafts are solid stainless steel AISI 431 and rotate on self-lubricating bronze bearings. The shafts are attached to the discby keyways or a groove.

    Standard actuation:

Actuation is performed by a hydraulic cylinder. In order toprovide the emergency closure characteristic, the system isequipped with a counterweight. The butterfly is opened byintroducing pressurised oil in one of the chambers of thehydraulic cylinder. The closure occurs by action of thecounterweight, which is joined to the shaft by a lever. Onreleasing oil from the cylinder, the counterweight lowers

closing the disc. The cylinder acts as a hydraulic absorberbecause when it controls the flow of released oil, the closurespeed is controlled thus fast at most of its stroke to avoid waterhammer and slow at the end to avoid final slam in the pipe.

The unit is dimensioned in order to be able to open and closein high head waters.

    By-pass device:

The by-pass device is comprised of a steel pipe, and twogate valves with external spindel in stainless steel and adisassembly carriage. Thus allowing pressures upstream anddownstream of the butterfly to be balanced.

    Venting system:

The air adduction system normally consists of one or various

dual function air relief valves, protected by their respective gatevalves, joined to the main pipe downstream of the butterfly. Itsmain function is the aerate the pipe in case of a breakdownstream, thus preventing a collapse due to the vacuum thatwould otherwise be present and, in addition, to allow trappedair to be released when necessary.

    4. ACTUATORS

This valve can be actuated manually (fig.6), electrically (fig.7)and hydraulically (fig.8), although the application usuallyselected is the hydraulic actuator due to the high stressesrequired. The hydraulic actuator may be self-contained (fig. 8)or with the cylinder to the floor for increased forces (fig.1).

The hydraulic unit will normally be equipped with a doublemotor pump and an emergency manual pump. The hydraulicreset system used will depend on the size of the hydrauliccylinder, both accumulators and/or pressure switches

(maximum and reset) may be used.

The electrical cabinet has a PLC for programming the opening, closing and emergency closing manoeuvres along with furthermanoeuvres specific to each case.

Tainter type radial gates are gates with a pivoting sectionwhich be located in channels and dam spillways either ascontrol elements for water levels or as regulation and dischargeelements in deepwater outlets of dams.

It is a unit formed by a mechanically welded curved sectorshaped gate which closes with elastomer profiles attached tothe gate with fixed parts embedded in the concrete.

The cylindrical surface or gate is concentrical to the supportshafts, so that the thrust produced by the water will passthrough them; this method therefore only needs a small amount

of movement to raise or lower the gate. The loads to be movedinclude the weight of the gate, the friction resistance betweenthe side closures, the piers and the shaft friction resistance.

    Its main advantages are:

Lifting force is considerably lessRegulation capacitySafe and simple operation and rapid lifting

    Arms:

The arms joined to the gate are formed by mechanicallywelded structures and transmit the stresses to the concretethrough maintenance free spherical bearings. The bearingshave large-sized bolts through which the thrust is transmitted tothe base plate on the concrete. Base plates are sized in orderto uniformly distribute pressure to the concrete, without saidpressures resulting excessive.

    Fixed parts:

Water tightness on three sides (sides and bottom) is achievedwith special profiles of EPDM elastomer (Ethylene-propylene)located on the gate. These profiles are secured using smallmetal plates and stainless steel screws. Both the side and lowerclosure surfaces are embedded in the concrete and are madeof stainless steel AISI 304.

The gate water tightness is obtained through contact ofelastomer profile seals with the seat. The seals are secured to

the gate with stainless steel plates and screws and the seat, also made of stainless steel, is embedded in the concrete. Allsteel gates surfaces have an appropriate anti-corrosionprotection for the service conditions.

    Fixed parts:

The fixed parts are formed by two side profiles of laminatesteel embedded in the concrete which form vertical supportsserving as a guide for the rollers and which extend to theoperation floor level. These supports house the front and sidepressure runways and the counter pressure runways and are

appropriately reinforced in order to transmit loads to theconcrete. The seal side and at the bottom of these profiles havestainless steel plates on the sides to serve as a contact surfacewith the elastomer in the seal position. These side plates will beplaced right up to the maximum opening position of the gatein order for the watertight seals to slide along them. In civilworks a profile with a stainless steel plate will be concretedand will form the top seating face of the gate to provide watertightness for the upper seal.

The bed is also placed on a concrete profile with a stainlesssteel surface for the lower seal. All steel surfaces of the gate

have adequate anti-corrosion protection for the serviceconditions.

    By-pass:

Although the roller gates are dimensioned to operate under themost unfavourable of conditions, there is the option of installinga by-pass incorporated in the gate panel which will act with themain actuator and which will enable the gate to be openedwith balanced loads.

The actuator operations are usually carried out by a doubleacting hydraulic cylinder with stainless steel chrome platedshaft. In the case of roller gates for protection purposes athydraulic power stations, the actuator is commonly a singleacting hydraulic cylinder with shock absorption on the finalsection where the gate is designed to close by force of gravity, adding ballast if necessary against passage flow. In both casesit has a mechanical position indicator device.

In cases where there is a large distance between the operationfloor and the gates, a mechanical link system is used to join thetwo.

The hydraulic operation unit has an oil tank with a double
