INTRODUCTION TO WATSON ACADEMY

-Watson Academy is an education and training support program for the Social Justice Services Department. The support includes staff training, record keeping and Harvard tutoring for youth programs.

-Marcy Rosenthal serves as the Program Director.

-Watson Academy has recently moved from Watson House in Cambridge to Somerville (above Somerville Transition Shelter).

-Over the past year, Watson Academy has unfortunately faced funding cuts, but has increased the focus on staff development and training.

HIGHLIGHTSMarcy traveled to Horizon House in order to conduct trainings in August 2011 and November 2011.

Marcy, Maria Alexson (HR) and Samantha Bugler (SQA) collaborated on improving and updating the training evaluations. Questionnaires were also created with the purpose of ensuring knowledge retention amongst staff. The new evaluations have been used since February 2012 and so far have been successful at obtaining more valuable and specific feedback on the trainings.

HIGHLIGHTSWatson Academy worked with Len Andrews, Director of Watson House, to provide a Personal Safety training for administrative staff at 500 Harrison.

Watson Academy has begun planning team building activities for SJS Programs.

The HR Department will be conducting regular supervisory trainings for SJS supervisors and has invited Marcy to co-facilitate this process.

Marcy was re-certified as a Red Cross First Aid/CPR instructor.

Watson Academy is bringing back life skills component over the summer with the help of a part-time life skills coordinator starting 7/1/12.

Treatment Culture: Staff Integrity and Ethics, Crisis Intervention, Interpersonal Relations

“Eye-opening in the least expected of ways, YPT (Youth Prisoner Tutoring) was an incredible learning experience – both socially and intellectually. For one, it challenged the stereotypes I carried with me when I walked into the program. It’s one thing to hear about experiences working with imprisoned youth and another to actually engage with them, to listen to them, and to laugh with them.”
