Dear Mr. Brauner:
Many thanks for your letter of november 26th, ad we take this opportunity to verify your report on our station. It is a pleasure indeed to receive such a complete report on a program from people who take such a kc' ' interest, such as you do.
In connection with the Transmission from our Station and various other stations in the North. I
attribute bur success mainly to the fact that we are located in -brie Souuern part of the province on the Prairie with no trees to attenuate our signal and in view of the many many letters we have received on this DX Program, I
am rather inclined to believe that the mountains which are directly to the West of us, act as a screen and make our signals very directional. This however, may be just a bac guess.
Regarding the type of music we used. We picked on this type of music particularly, in view of the fact that is is very seldom if ever, heard from stations on this continent. The records are all imported from England and consequently when we get reports on our station we can be fairly certain that it was us they heard in view of the fact that they practically have to have the details for some of the numbers. It is almost impossibl to guess at them, as can be done with the recordings used in this country.
Regarding our equipment. It is a very old fashioned transmitter which will have been scrapped before this letter reaches you and will be replaced with one of the newest modern transmitters on the market today.
Mr. J.W. Brauner - --
We expect to run a DX Program again early in January at which time we will be notifying your club and if we get as many reports then, as we
have now, we will be more than compensated for our
trouble.
Again thanking you, I am,
Yours truly

Dear Sir:
MARCH SEVENTH 1934.
EDMONTON, ALBERTA CANADA
I have your letter of March 3rd and
thank you for your report. We are certainly meeting
with very poor success in trying to reach the DX
listeners of the Eastern United States and Canada.
Our local conditions on that night were not good.
The previous evening distant stations were coming in
well, but on the night of the 2nd to 3rd reception was
bal were and we felt that we would not be very success-
ful on that night.
We shall not put on another test this season,
but hope to do so in October or November, by which time
certain tests and improvements to our transmitter will
have been made. Our station is used for experiment and
research by the Department of Electrical Engineering under
whose direction the present transmitter has been built up
and there is no doubt that after a summer's work we shall
be in a greatly improved position for DX tests and trans-
mission generally.
We will give your club lots of notice regard-
ing our next test.

10 B.P. HEARD IN TWENTY -TWO STATES
The local broadcasting station am- eluded their series of 6 DX programs last week with a studio program and from reports received was the best of the series. In all six DX programs llave been put on in the past three months, being heard in four provinces and twenty -two states. Letters have been received from as far west as Montana and as far east as Nova Sco- tia, and south to Carolina. The sta- tion received 273 letters from differ- ent listeners.
The following are the number of letters received from the different States and Provinces: New York 50, New Jersey 79, Illinois 41, Ohio 14, Pennsylvania 29, Massachusetts 9, Quebec 2, Wisconsin 4, Maryland 13, Virginia 5, Michigan 3, Ontario 19, Indiana 5, New Hampshire 4, Con- necticut 5, and one from Vermont, Missouri, Nebraska, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Maine, Carolina, Kansas, Montana, District of Columbia and Iowa.
At the late program of the Chicago Daily News Station on Monday ev- ening the announcer stated that 10- B.P. was the best known low- powered station on the dial.
The following is clipped from a let- ter received from J. W. Brauner, of Syracuse, N.Y., in regard to the last broadcast, and speaks for itself as to the reception of this distance.
"I certainly enjoyed your program this morning, you had one fine bunch of artists present, the first group I heard was the Hawaiian trio who op- ened a group of selections with "Hila March" at 1.15. I also am addicted to old time music and your old timers were very good, so naturally I en- joyed their portion of the program. I wish I could personally thank the tenor who sang "Moonlight on the Colorado" and "When It's Spring- time in the Rockies."

Dear Mr. Brauner,
Glad to hear from you again and to hear you are still located at Williamsville. Sorry to hear that part of our program was interrupted by interference. Our transmitter at CFCH is a brand new Marconi job, the latest in every respect being installed only about 4 months ago. The old rig, the one you mentioned, is the transmitter being used at CKGB in Timmins.
I am sorry I must cut this letter short but tb,.anks a lot for taking thr trouble to write us and I hope that this will serve as a verifica- tion. We will be on the air again with another DX broadcast on January 20th, 1935.

Dear Sir/ -
You will please accept my apology for not answering your most interesting communication of November 24th sooner. The fact of the matter is that one of our representatives was carrying it around in his pocket for a number of days showing it to newspaper reporters, and interested friends. I have finally managed to get my clutches on it and it gives me great pleasure to acknowledge its reception.
For some peculiar reason or other this station persists in pounding into t,-,e New England and adjacent states, particularily when we conduct any sort of unofficial DX test. On the particular evening which you mention we had been having trouble with a tank condenser spilling over. After making some adjustments we decided to split the ether for a few hours overtime just to give the entire mechanism a test. Having received permission from the Department of Marines and Fisheries, we also have been experimenting with frequency channels and that is probably the reason you found us on 950 KC instead of 930KC.
We have a new 100 watt, 100% job u. der construction and it should be on the air by Christmas time. You picked us up on our present equipment - -50 watts, Hartley circuit - -which is anything but efficient. We expect our new equipment to give us 400watts on peak modulation and as a result you should have no difficulty in contacting us provided we are successful in locating a channel that will allow us to operate without being cut to pieces. At the present time that is our chief difficulty.

Your comments with regard to programmes and their presentation are much appreciated -- particularily by myself. I major in this type of work and have had reason to be much gratified. Radio presentation in a small city is anything but a bed of roses as you may well appreciate but we are doing our best to maintain the recognized position --that of operating the finest of small raoio stations in the Dominion of Canada. 1ve are a member of the basic network of the Dominion Broadcasting Company and of the Canadian National Railways, which in itself is quite a distinction. I mention these items, not in bombastic fashion, but just as one radio man to another.
In conclusion I might say that we do not issue a special stamp but use a verification card one of which I am including in this letter.
Thanks for your letter old man and I shall be more than pleased to hear from you at any time. Ve shall be conducting tests when our new equipment takes the air and I shall make a point of arranging in advance to contact you so that we may have your comment.
Yours very truly,

Dear Sir; Thank you kindly for your letter of recent date.
You are obviously a member of the Owls Club.
Regarding your question pertaining to the hours on the air of CHCS,a local station, I beg to say that this station very rarely, if ever, broadcasts. It is operated by the Hamilton Spectator Newspaper and when on the air uses only a power of 5 Watts. To my knowledge this station hasn't been heard in over 2 years and then it was only used to broadcast civic election returns.
I am, Sir, Trusting that this answers fully your question

Dear 3ir:- Please pardon my delay in attending to
the :roposition which you have to offer us in your letter of Larch Ist.I930.
Since you have not doubt not heard of our frequency allocation we might refer you to the letter -head.
It would not be convenient for us to run according to your su- Festion, however I might suggest a program of an hour and a half duration -
12:00 (mid -night) until I :30 a.m. on Saturday morn- ing, April 19th. she time is ,astern Standard. This would give you a.-;le time in which to notify the me tubers, and thw other clubs, as you suggested.
Since changing our frequency we are reaching out to more distant points, and you should experience no difficulty whatever in logging CKPR at the hour stated.

Dear Sir,
Ottawa, May 5th, 1933.
This will acknowledge your letter of April 23rd, in which you give certain information with regard to radio conditions in Canada.
The data which you give in connection with the changes on Hamilton and Toronto stations is very interesting, as it is quite different from what we have been led to believe by the station owners themselves. I should be very glad indeed to hear from you occasionally, and we are particularly interested in whether the conditions you describe continue into the summer. Station ORCO in Ottawa was formerly known as CNRO and operated on 500 kilocycles. It has now been moved to 88O kilocycles. We would expect some decrease in coverage, but can assure you that within the service area of the station there is a vast improvement. Undoubtedly with your greater proximity to your high -power American stations you will have trouble in your own area. The description you give of the programs heard on 880 kilocycles on April 22nd would indicate that you were listening to the Ottawa station ORCO. At the time you mention, this station was operating without crystal control. I would be glad to know whether at the present time there is any difference in the receiving conditions which you describe.
I am enclosing herewith a copy of the new list of frequencies in use in Canada. I trust that this will be of some use to you in your work.

Dear Sir:
Thank you for your communication of December 22nd and the detailed report which you have given. We certainly assure you that the pains you took are appreciated.
It might interest you to know that we made considerable coverage during these tests, having already heard from the western part of Ontario and as far south as Pennsylvania, although we feel certain, from the signal strength reported, that we must have travelled much further. Naturally, the interference on /the same wave length would be sure to cut us off sooner than our signal would be otherwise affected.
We are already in communication with your co- worker, Mr. W. 7. Applegate, and you will likely hear of a DX test from this station shortly, through your regular club channels.
Again thanking you for your report.
Very truly yours,

Dear Sir:
Thank you for your detailed report of January 27th, reporting reception of our DX test on that morning. "our r'urther comment on the clarity and strength of our signal is also noted, and is deeply appreciated.

'rankly, therefore, it seems to be a fight between the two of us for coverage in :'ew York State, but si nce we are considerably further away than WXYZ, we feel that we are doing very good under the circumstances.
It is not likely that we will be putting on DX tests for some time to come, which is a resumption o? our previous policy to refuse DX test broadcasting, because of the improbability of a clear channel and the very early hours of the morning we have to go on the air.

Dear Mr. Brauner : -
Just a hearty hello for it seems like hearing from a long -lost boy to receive your letter. Although I am not connected with 'JJLS at the present time- having my hands full with the big celebration we are preparing for, - I do thank you for your fine letter and report on reception, not only for myself, but for our dandy little sta tion. 1. aissure you I. am quite proud of it,and hope to see better thir}gs come from it in the future.
the Dx programs this year- for the 11Eá- originate wi th the 175th Anniversary Advertising committee, and I assure you we
are getting our money's worth in responses. It has been a real pleasure to work with Bill Applegate, and around here the 1iI1F:C
can ask for most anything they want and get it. Incidentally, I have invited the 1I'1 C to hold their Convention here this surn::er,and extended a personal invitation to every member to visit us, one way or another.
I might advise that you listen in the 5th of April, wben I will have our local band (Yarmouth military) thirty -six pieces- on
the air in a concert program f r the i ILC. I fancy that will climax my efforts with local talent. I have on one or two occasions, said hello to you during these programs, and asked if you were sick, sore or lost, but 1 see from your letter that you were busy and I'm glad to hear that you are. i have passed along your thanks and regards to all the talent, and they all send -with myself- greetinga, thanks and best wishes. and- hope we may have the pleasure of a visit from you

Dear Sir:
Thank you for your letter of December 24th, criticizing the form or verification used by Station Clile. As a matter of fact, this Station is non- commercial, has practically no income, uses University funds, and provides DX programs at all only because persistently requested to do so. They do not come within the regular program or the Station.
I quite see your point of view in the matter. It came at a time when the entire orrice staff was especially busy and there ;gas no alternative to this in the acknowledging of the hundreds of letters re- ceived from all over the United States and Canada.

We have great pleasure in confirming your reception of a program from CJEW, r'leming, Saskatchewan, on June 16, 1929.
We do not as a rule send out confirmation of reception. We so rarely receive incorrect reports that we find it better to send out schedule cards or booklets to all listeners whose reportsindicate actual reception. Dear Mr. Brauner;
MOOSE JAW, SASK.
April 30th, 1932.
I was again pleased to receive your letter of April 21st but sorry you did not catch us on our three broadcasts.
I also want to thank you for the papers and clippings which have been sent and especially the Newark News which reached here this morning, giving a record of our proposed DX programme tomorrow morning. I
read with interest your letter to Mr. Paine. Not being an "old ham' myself I was rather mystified at portions of your letter but Mr. Paine very kindly explained them to me. The matter of the results of our DX tests came before our executive at it's last meeting and I was instructed to write you on their behalf expressing the sincerest appreciation of the association to you, the Newark News Radio Club, the Newark News and other agencies in the States who co- operated with us so kindly and so freely in connection with these tests. We are more than pleased at the results and had we known the possibilities of DX programmes we would have put a number on earlier in the season. We hope however, this fall that we will be able to work with you again to put on a series when the weather is more propitious for broadcasting.
We were able to verify 31 letters and cards reporting reception on the first test, 82 on the second, and 27 on the third. we found Chicago got our programmes particularly well, also the district around Denver and Kansas

City. We also have had reports of good reception from Hamilton Ontario, Drummondville Quebec, Brooklyn N.Y., and different points in North Carolina, Ohio, 'Jest Virginia, Alabama, Michigan, Indiana, Colorado, Texas, Missouri, California, Washington and inter- vening states. I enclose herewith a list of membe s f your club who id:ntified them- selves citing to this station. I thought it might be interesting to you.
I am very sorry that you did not hear these programmes because i should have liked to have your criticism for future improvement. If however you have heard of any criticism or could offer any we would certainly appreciate hearing from you. As I intimated before we have been ignorant of the possibilities of these tests and have not bothered much whether we were in any of the logs or not. I woult like however to have the station mentioned for next fall in as many radio logs as possible. I was wondering if you could give me a hint as to how to go about this. If so it will be greatly appreciated.
I think when I answered you first letter last winter I told you that we were expecting to get new equipment. We have every expectation not withstanding hard times of getting some money to purchase this equip- ment to be installed next fall and I am sure you can look forward to hearing us at that time even though we may not have got out to you this spring. I do not expect we will get any more results from the programmes tomorrow norning and the following Sunday morning but it will give us experience anyway.
With best wishes,
fia

Dear Mr. Brauner: -

MOOSE JAW, SASK.
November 18, 1932.
We certainly appreciate the very close co- operation you have extended to us in all our DX programmes. While we dedicate isolated programmes to different radio clubs, as you know, the Newark News Radio Club is our standby, and we cannot express our appreciation too sincerely of both your and their co- operation with us.
I was very interested to note the contents of your letter of Nov. 6th. We will try out New Zealand toward Spring as you suggest.
I do not myself feel competent to write you a letter about our transmitter. It is entirely home -made and I am going to ask the man who made it to write you about this, but you must not expect to hear from Aim at once as he has been very busy with new equipment and I just don't feel like asking aim to write and do his subject justice just now.
You will be interested to know that we had over one - hundred and sixty replies to our last DX test from all over the North American Continent, the fartheSt away being Tampa. Florida. We heard from Mountainair, New Mexico, so have now heard from every state in the U.S.A. The letters we have received have been most gratifying in that pract- ically every one has been able to give us absolute proof that they heard our programme.
We will surely appreciate hearing from you at any time. We know you must have a lot of corr3spondence to handle, but any time you can find the opportunity to write, we would appreciate your doing so.
Yours very truly, MOOSE JAW RADIO ASSOCIATI

Dear ?'r.Brauner: - I find no difficulty at all n being able to
Officially Verify your report on reception of CF%C. on Feb.24th. at 2.04 . an.?."ST .
You give us no less than nine correct numbers, announcements etc.
Every word of this programe was closely recorded, in case we would have to refer minutely to the log, therefor, I had but little difficulty in checking your report, and found it correct.
Please accept this letter es an Official Veri, and I an, more pleased than I can tell, to be able to do it.
I i-aegine your location must be thw worlds worst for Saskatchewan stations, as I have had many reports from nearly every state in the Union, including three from New Jersey.
1:inety per cent of the reports state that our signals came in fine, the average signal strength being R7 -8,
and to our gratification and suprise, most of the reports were exceedingly comprehensive. One from ';Jest Virginia and another from 2Tew Jersey, gave us practically every number and announcement made correctly.
Radio is a strange and wonderful thing, and all apparently depends on the artic1?lar location of the reciever. The poer of the reciever seems to mean nothing. One chap in
Greenville Po. gave four numbers rating us at R4, saying that he heard us with difficulty, and using a Scott 12 tube outfit, whereas another fellow, also in Greenville Pe, using a four tube c'...stom built set, gives us the whole programe, word for word, at R8 - 9. What can you make of such results?
10 other reports mentioned any la.rticulat weakening of our signals, from 2.30. on
Thanking you once again for your report. Yours very Sincerely, and thanks for the

Dear Mr. Brauner:- Many thanks for your courtesy in writing to us, regarding your
reception of óur Transmission re the above program. As on the last occasion, your report is correct, I mention
this, as you may perhaps wish at some later date, to enter the competition for CDXR Special programs, in that event, this verie would come in useful.
We at CFQC, appreciaté very mach the Technicalities of your` report, thay are certainly useful and instructive, as it is only by recieving technical reports, that we are able to know of our weaknessess.
Reports have been recieved from many-States and T-rovinces, and curiously enough, many of them complain about "Code" rhM. Vvhere on earth it came from is a mystery, we are endeavouring to get a line on it, through comparing the reports in certain localities. We aefinitely have assured ourselves, that the ÇRM did not originate in Saskatoon.
Thanking you once again for your kindly report, and wishing you evry success in your future DXing activities.

Dear Mr. Brauner:
It was very good to hear from you again and your kind letter of January 28th was particularly interesting to us all here.
We had a very good response to this test here from Victoria, B.C., in Western Canada, Gananoque, Ont., in Eastern Canada, and from :,Saine, Conn., Maryland, Alabama, Missouri, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, New York City, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Mass., Vt. , New Jersey, Mich., Neb. , Kane., Tenn., Nevada, Calif. vie were not able to 'et to the south -west portion of the States this time, apparently on account of Station KGFJ who were on at the same time. Every ry letter we got contained more than sufficient information to verify reception, al- though some in the east complained of very heavy static.
We have been approached by the International Dxers' alliance to put on a test and we are doing so on the morning of `:larch 11th, between 1:00 & 5 :00 A.M., T. We could not, however, leave the Newark News hadio Club out of any of our Dx 's sot're dedicating part of the program to your Club, between 2 :00 & 3:00 A.M., MIST.
With very best regards from us all here.

The program which you tuned in on the morning of the 28th. was indeed, coming from this station, and we thank you very much for your letter.
As a matter of fact we were not nutting on a DX program in the usual sense of the word.. 8nr engineer wanted to go on the air after midnight in order to make some adjustments, and since I had to stay up late to announce it I thought I might just as well have some fun. Believe me I did. It's really sñrprising the number of eople who have written considering the fact that we were only on the air for a half hour.
