Sarah-Lee. ‘An overly dewy finish can make skin appear shiny on camera, while very matte makeup can make your skin look dull.’
The secret to applying foundation successfully is to use it sparingly. Stacy recommends starting at the centre of the face where the largest amount of sun damage and blemishes tends to occur. ‘Blend the product out gradually, so there is very little foundation left by the time you reach the jaw or hairline,’ she says. Lidean Erasmus, makeup artist for Elizabeth Arden, agrees: ‘You can always build up to your desired coverage.’ For a natural, smooth finish, use a foundation brush – then with your fingers, lightly blend any lines left by the bristles.
Next, apply concealer to areas that need extra coverage, such as under your eyes. ‘A little bit goes a long way,’ says Neisha henry from Smashbox. ‘Apply it after foundation, as you may not need as much product as you thought.’ Finally, for long-lasting results dust powder over your forehead, nose and chin. If you’re after a dewier look, lightly mist on a hydrating facial spray. ‘It keeps skin looking fresh,’ says Stacy.
For touch-ups, Sarah-Lee recommends using blotting paper to soak up excess oil, rather than piling on layers of powder. ‘This avoids a build-up of product, which tends to look unnatural.’

CheeksEven if you’re blessed with model-like cheekbones, contouring will add definition. First, smile into the mirror and find the highest point of the apple of your cheek – this is where you should concentrate your blush. Choose a colour that complements your lipstick for a harmonious effect, says Neisha. Blend it up towards the hairline, making sure there are no harsh lines.
Even if you’re playing up your cheeks, be careful as blush can easily look overdone. Apply only a little more than you might normally, advises Maria. ‘Wearing white can make you look washed out in photos, and blush will wear off over the course of the day. If you’re not sure how strong the colour should be, take a picture in natural light and judge from that.’
Next, add bronzer to your arsenal: blend it along your cheekbone and slightly underneath. ‘A darker colour in the hollow of the cheek creates a sculpted look,’ says Stacy. To keep the look natural, choose a bronzer that is only one or two shades darker than your skin tone. Then apply a highlighter to the top of your cheekbones to reflect the light: steer clear of anything glittery and go for a subtle shimmer instead. ‘Always keep highlighter away from the centre of your face, as it may make skin look oily in your photographs,’ says Sarah-Lee.
EyesWhether it’s used to emphasise your eye colour or shape, neutral tones reign supreme. ‘Bright colours may make you cringe when you look at your photos in years to come,’ says Christina Fairhurst from Revlon. Try a light, flesh-toned eyeshadow over your whole eyelid and a soft brown shade blended into the crease of your eye. ‘Use a brush designed specifically for this, and concentrate on the outer corners of the eyes to elongate them,’ says Stacy. Keep dark shades away from the inner corner of your eyes: ‘A bright inner corner makes you look fresh and well rested,’ says Maria. If you want a smoky look, apply dark eye makeup before your base. ‘Eyeshadow will inevitably end up under the eye, and it’s much easier to clean up if you’re not worried about wiping away your concealer.’
Eyeliner is the best way to show off a stunning eye shape. Says Sarah-Lee: ‘Liner will define your eyes and make your lashes look fuller at the root.’ Add volumising mascara, moving the brush from side to side as you work from the base to the tips of your lashes – this ensures they are coated evenly. If you’re the teary type, make sure you choose a waterproof formula. False eyelashes can add extra definition, but if you’re not used to them, try them a few times before the big day. ‘You want to check that you like the look and feel comfortable wearing them,’ says Maria.
Don’t forget about your eyebrows. ‘They frame your face and bring the focus to your eyes,’ says Nigel Stanislaus, Maybelline New York makeup artist. If you’re not confident with the tweezers
have them shaped professionally, and don’t overpluck them – fuller brows look more youthful. ‘Then, add definition and accentuate their shape with a powder or gel designed for the brows,’ says Maria. Finally, take a few deep breaths

LipsThere are plenty of options for playing up your lips, and it’s up to you whether you choose shimmering gloss or a bright colour to rival Marilyn Monroe’s pout. ‘It’s a matter of personal taste,’ says Sarah-Lee. ‘But if you wear a strong colour, make sure you feel confident and comfortable. You have to own it!’
Remember, bold hues also mean high maintenance. ‘Throughout the day, you’ll need to check it hasn’t smudged,’ Sarah-Lee says. Long-lasting formulas will keep touch-ups to a minimum, or consider wearing a bright colour during your portrait session – you can revel in the drama of bright lips, then wipe the product off and apply something more sheer for the rest of the festivities. Most importantly, the colour should work with your skin tone: you’ll know you’ve found the one when it makes you look well rested the instant it’s applied.
Whatever shade you choose, begin with a light layer of lip primer. Lip liner will add definition and create a base for your colour. For a look that lasts, apply lipstick with a brush, then blot with a tissue before applying a second coat. To make lips appear more plump, Lisa Matson from L’Oréal suggests you play with colour. ‘Add a lighter-coloured lipstick or gloss, in a complementary tone to the lipstick you’re wearing, to the middle area of the lips.’ This creates the illusion of fuller lips. Draw attention to your mouth with a touch of highlighter on the cupid’s bow of your upper lip, says Maria Robins from Jane Iredale. ‘This gives a natural-looking radiance.’
