Sharing Life TogetherDietrich Bonhoeffer, in his book Life Together, observes: “The physical presence of other Christians is a source of incomparable joy and strength to the believer.”

What you now hold in your hands is an opportunity for you to experience that “incomparable joy and strength,” even if you don’t consider yourself a believer. As humans, we’re wired to need each other, we are wired to be together in community. Within these pages there are a multitude of rewarding ways to fill your need to connect, belong, and transform, no matter your age. So thumb through this catalogue.

Connect with an interest, a theme, or an activity that you’d enjoy. Sign up. And show up. It’s that simple.

And in the process you’ll discover why we at WCC believe that “life together” is so important. You will also discover why the Jesus we follow believed that life together was our call as children of God: He lived, ate, slept, conversed, and traveled with a group of women and men. Because God loves community. So we hope you’ll join us in following Jesus and sharing “life together” this season.

Blessings, Your Ministry Staff

Lent Worship ASH WEDNESDAY WORSHIP* March 6, 6:30 p.m., Sanctuary The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, ushering us into 40 days of reflection, repentance, and renewal. As worshipers arrive they will enter a bright worship space and receive the gift of Holy Communion. As the service unfolds, we will move farther and farther into the Dark—where we will collectively spend the season of Lent. Concluding with the imposition of ashes for all who wish. Join us as we begin our Lenten journey together.

HOLY WEEK HOLY WEDNESDAY* April 17, 5:15 p.m. Community Meal & 6:30 p.m. Worship, Mithun Hall This year we will begin our Holy Week services with Wednesday Night Table Worship. Join us for a $5 meal, followed by worship in Mithun Hall. We will walk through Jesus’ last meal with his followers, connect our journey to the passover journey of our Jewish brothers and sisters, and be sent out as servant leaders into Christ’s Kindom. MAUNDY THURSDAY, TENEBRAE WITH COMMUNION* April 18, 7:00 p.m., Sanctuary The service of Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows,” has been practiced by the church since medieval times. Once a service for the monastic community, Tenebrae later became an important part of the worship of the entire church during Holy Week. We join Christians of many generations throughout the world in using the liturgy of Tenebrae.

Tenebrae is a prolonged meditation on Christ’s suffering. Readings trace the story of Christ’s passion, music portrays his pathos, and the power of silence and darkness suggests the drama of this momentous day. As lights are extinguished, we ponder the depth of Christ’s suffering and death; we remember the cataclysmic nature of his sacrifice and through the return of the small but persistent flame of the Christ candle at the conclusion of the service, we anticipate the joy of ultimate victory. GOOD FRIDAY, EXPERIENTIAL WORSHIP* April 19, 6:00 p.m., Sanctuary Our Good Friday Experience is one of the most reverent and dramatic services of the year with profound music, spoken word, art, and a chance for all to engage in a solemn, contemplative, and modern style worship experience.

* Childcare available for Birth-PreK.

Easter Children’s Choir Rehearsals: Wednesdays, March 27, April 10 6:00-6:30 in the Adult Choir Room All children are invited to join in this special Choir to sing during Easter morning at the 8:30 a.m. Worship on Sunday, April 21. We’ll meet for 3 Wednesdays and learn an easy song to lead Easter morning, and have some other surprises during our time together. No previous choir experience needed.

Lenten Sermon Series

Cross Words The Seven Last Words of Jesus

Taking them one at a time through the season of Lent, we will ponder the meaning and importance of Jesus’ final words. We might consider these the dying words of Jesus giving us a glimpse into what may have mattered most to Him. Forgive... You will be with me… Behold… Forsaken… Thirst… Finished… I commit my spirit…

Lenten Devotions R If you would like to receive an inspiring daily Lenten devotion via email, please register online at www.wayzatacommunitychurch.org/springregistration.

See pages 8-9 for information about Lenten Study Groups.

6. John 19:30: It is finished. (From the Greek "Tetelestai" which is also translated "It is accomplished", or "It is complete".)

This piece is titled “It is finished” and also just the look on his face, exhaustion, rest, like the task he set out to do is done. But also at peace.

Seven Last Words of Christ Lenten Art Exhibit EXHIBIT DATES February 27-April 23, 2019 OPENING RECEPTION Sunday, March 3 following the 9 a.m. service The Art & Design Committee will host and answer any questions you may have about the exhibit.

Included artworks span a variety of styles including woodcut, figurative, mixed media, found object, wall sculpture, watercolor and a hand-sewn Mola textile. Sermon SeriesApril-May Community It’s Not Just Our Middle Name Just as the church became a community in the days following Jesus death and resurrection, we will spend these Sundays exploring new ways WCC can build and rebuild our community. Embracing our middle name, we will use this sermon series as a bookend to our opening series last fall, “Neighbor”.

Females of ALL ages are invited to sing in the 7th Annual special Mother’s Day Intergenera-tional Choir! SUNDAY PROGRAMS R Early Childhood Offered at 9:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Early Childhood Ministry serves WCC’s youngest children, ages birth to 5. We believe that no child is too young to wor-ship and learn about God, who made them and loves them unconditionally, and Jesus, who wants be their friend forever. We spend time in our Sunday School classrooms learning through developmentally appropriate play and large group time with an emphasis on sharing, caring for each other, and having fun.

Each Sunday School classroom has a lead teacher who is CPR/First Aid certified and has experience in early childhood education. Our teachers, as well as our volunteers, go through ministry training and are background checked to keep each child physically, emotionally, and spiritually safe while in our care.

Elementary Offered at 9:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. WCC’s Elementary Ministry is uniquely designed with kids in mind. Our Sunday morning program for children is called Graceland. Graceland weaves large group music, dancing, and games with small group discussions, cooking, and creative activities together to reinforce one clear and simple bottom line lesson each week. Our deepest desire is that kids can walk away and remember what matters most and carry it into their week and into your family. All of our volunteers are background checked and trained to provide a safe, fun quality learning experience for your child. Middle School 9:00 a.m. Join us starting in the Middle School Corner for games, video clips, discussions, crafts, food projects and more, as we enjoy a light breakfast together! This year we are diving into a year-full of getting to know many of the people in the Bible! All 6th, 7th & 8th graders gather together for this more relaxed time to get to know one another! 10:45 a.m. Middle School students volunteer to help around WCC to be God’s hands and feet in the world. High School High School on Sunday is focused on acts of discipleship. Students will have opportunities to put faith into action within the worship community of WCC. They will worship with their families — within the wider inter-generational community — participate in worship leadership, or serve in other ministry areas. Join High School Directors Jordan Masters and Gabe Flynn from 10:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m. in the High School Loft (3rd floor) for a chance to connect each week.

MUSIC AT WAYZATA CONCERTS St. Paul Chamber Orchestra Friday, March 8, 2019, 8:00 p.m. This program takes a look at two works written in tribute of friends that have passed. Mussorgsky’s most well-known work, Pictures at an Exhibition, was written for artist and architect Viktor Hartmann, heard here in an arrangement for dectet. Each of the ten pieces are based on drawings and watercolors by Hartmann during his travels abroad. Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A Minor was written in tribute of the pianist, conductor and composer Nikolai Rubinstein. Tickets: www.thespco.org. Friday, April 12, 2019, 8:00 p.m. The second movement of Bach’s Suite, known as Air on the G String, features one of his most recognizable melodies, while Beethoven builds on his own admiration of Bach with a fugue-like structure in the Heiliger Dankgesang. Mendelssohn’s Nocturno was revised three times at least, eventually expanded into the Overture for Winds, while the octet makes extended use of Bach-like counterpoint along with a symphonic sensibility reminiscent of Beethoven. Tickets: www.thespco.org.

Cantus When I Grow Up Sunday, March 24, 2019, 3:00 p.m. What kind of person do I want to be? How do I find someone to share my life with? What happens when I make mistakes? When I Grow Up explores the path of self-realization. From childhood through adulthood, Cantus reflects on the cycle of life and explores how we become who we are. Tickets: www.cantussings.org. Wayzata Symphony Orchestra Celebrating WSO’s 10th Anniversary! Creative Collaboration Sunday, April 28, 2019, 3:00 p.m. Join us for this creative collaboration of professional musicians, with guest artists Osmo Vänskä (clarinet), Marlene Pauley (clarinet), Charles Lazarus (trumpet), and Dean Sorenson (trombone). The concert is free. Join us for a reception following the concert to meet the musicians.

GrowADULT FAITH FORMATION

Lenten Study and Lenten Study Groups Wednesdays, March 13-April 10 During Lent this year we will focus on the doctrine of ATONEMENT. The issue of atonement is both central to the gospel and has amazingly drawn a lot of controversy of late. Every presentation of the gospel, every catechism and nearly every sermon has a theory of atonement at work. Ever notice this? This year, you can choose from one of two texts. Tony Jones’ Did God Kill Jesus, and Scot Mcknight’s A Community Called Atonement.

Lenten Study Groups Cost: $20 Over the last 20 years WCC has hosted Lenten study groups. If you would like to join one of these smaller study groups this Lent, sign up in Founders Hall on Sundays, or contact Rustin Comer, [email protected].

Did God Kill Jesus? R Teachers: Rev. Rustin Comer & Dr. Ron Troxel Wednesdays, March 13- April 10 10:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., Colonnade Cost: $20 Many Christians believe that God the Father demanded his only Son die a cruel, gruesome death to appease His wrath, since humanity is so irredeemably sinful and therefore re-pugnant to God. Tony Jones, popular progressive Christian blogger, author, and scholar, argues that this understanding is actually a medieval invention and not what the Bible really teaches. He looks beyond medieval convictions and liberates how we see Jesus’s death on the cross from this restrictive paradigm. Christians today must transcend the shame and guilt that have shaped concep-tions of the human soul and made us fearful of God, and replace them with love, grace, and joyfulness, which better expresses what the cross is really about.

How we understand the cross reflects directly what kind of God we worship. By letting go of the wrathful God who can-not stand to be in our presence unless he pretends to see Jesus in our place, we discover the Biblical God who reaches out to love and embrace us while “we were yet sinners.” Jones offers a positive, loving, inclusive interpretation of the faith that is both challenging and inspiring. Did God Kill Jesus? is essential reading for modern Christians.

Sacred Enneagram Workshop

SACRED ENNEAGRAM WORKSHOP AND RETREAT R Teacher: Christopher L. Heuertz Saturday, March 9 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Mithun Hall Fee: $120 Have you ever asked yourself the quintessential human question of identity, “Who am I?” Most of us spend a lifetime trying to figure out who we are and how we relate to others and God.

Unfortunately, in the process of forming an identity, we succumb to building up lies and illusions around our sense of self that only lead us further away from who we truly are. But the Enneagram offers a bright path to cutting through the internal clutter and finding our way back to who we are created to be.

Based on the nine classic archetypes of human character structure, the Enneagram exposes the nine ways we lie to ourselves about who we think we are, illustrates the nine ways we get lost, and reveals nine ways we find our way home to our True Self and to God. Whether you’ve heard of the Enneagram or not, this workshop is for anyone who’s interested in learning more.

Christopher L. Heuertz was first introduced to the Enneagram in the slums of Cambodia. Since then he has trained under some of the great living Enneagram masters including Father Richard Rohr, Russ Hudson, Marion Gilbert, and Helen Palmer, and now teaches the Enneagram in workshops and retreats around the world. Chris is an International Enneagram Association Accredited Professional.

A Community Called Atonement R Teacher: Rev. Rustin Comer Wednesdays, March 13- April 10 4:00 p.m., Colonnade Cost: $20 Over the centuries the church developed a number of met-aphors, such as penal substitution or the ransom theory, to speak about Christ’s death on the cross and the theological concept of the atonement. Yet too often, says Dr. Scot McKnight, Christians have held to the supremacy of one metaphor over the others, to their detriment. He argues instead that to plumb the rich theological depths of the atonement, we must consider all the metaphors of atone-ment and ask whether each serves a larger purpose.

A Community Called Atonement is a constructive theology that not only values the church’s atonement metaphors but also asserts that atonement fundamentally shapes the life of the Christian and of the church. That is, Christ identifies with humans to call us into a community that reflects God’s love (the church)— but that community then has the responsibility to offer God’s love to others through missional practices of justice and fellowship, living out its life together as the story of God’s reconciliation. This is an accessible, thought-provoking theology of atonement that engages the concerns of those in the emerging church conversation and will be of interest to all those in the church and academy who are listening in.

Spring Core Classes CORE BIBLE: Jesus and Justice R Teacher: Rev. Rustin Comer Wednesdays, April 24-May 15 10:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., Chapel Cost: $20 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” This is the recorded content of the first sermon Jesus ever preaches. Join us this spring to explore Jesus and Justice. In this class we will explore three themes of justice: 1) the exer-cise of power, 2) economic issues, and 3) human worth. The 4-week class will place Jesus’s actions and teachings in the social and political conditions of first century Galilee and Judea while also considering their relevance to contemporary events and circumstances. Join us for this short study on Jesus and Justice.

CORE Theology: Narrative Theory, Theology, and Practice R Teacher: Rev. Lindy Purdy Wednesdays, April 24- May 15 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., Colonnade Cost: $20 Narrative theory is the belief that we derive meaning (even create ourselves) from the stories we tell about ourselves and the stories others tell about us. The practice of narrative looks at how stories help people make sense of the world, while also looking at how people make sense of their stories. Come spend a few hours looking at this theory, the relational theology of narrative, and how we might grow into the practice of narrative as a way to understand our world and our relationships in a new way. CORE: Interfaith Book Study R Abraham, A Journey To the Heart of Three Faiths, Bruce Feiler Teacher: Nan Peterson Wednesdays, May 1-May 15 6:30 p.m., Piper Library Cost: $20 Both immediate and timeless, Abraham tells the powerful story of one man’s search for the shared ancestor of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Traveling through war zones, braving violence at religious sites, and seeking out faith leaders, Bruce Feiler uncovers the defining yet divisive role that Abraham plays for half the world’s believers. Provocative and uplifting, Abraham offers a thoughtful and inspiring vision of unity that redefines what we think about our neighbors, our future, and ourselves.

CORE: Theatre Event R Sisters of Peace Sunday, March 24 2:00 p.m. at the History Theatre in St. Paul Cost: $40 (20 tickets available) Reserve tickets at www.wayzatacommunity-church.org/springregistration Today, yesterday & beyond. Wednesday nights on the Lake Street Bridge, you can always find a handful of people marching with colorful signs and protesting for peace. Among them, you’d find the McDonald sisters Brigid, Jane, Rita and Kate: legendary peace activists, who grew up as sisters in a large Irish farm family in Hollywood Township, Minnesota. The four sisters all entered the convent and became Catholic nuns who devoted their lives to teaching and peace activism. That’s only part of the story. Their incredible lives come to life in this stirring play that takes us on a journey from the security gates of Honeywell Corporation, to the School of the Americas and back to the steps of the Cathedral of St. Paul. Wherever there is injustice, the chances of bumping into the McDonald sisters are high. THIS IS THEIR STORY! A story of love, passion and compassion – all with a sense of humor that comes from their wonderful Irish upbringing! These Sisters of Peace are Minnesota legends, for sure!

YOUNG ADULTS INKLINGS Young Adult Book Study: Saints and Sinners Facilitator: Anna Sanford Wednesday nights, 8:30 p.m. Main Street Bar & Grill, Hopkins Saints are people too. The word saint conjures up images of superstar Christians revered for their spectacular acts and otherworldly piety. But when we take a closer look at the lives of these spiritual heavyweights, we learn that they also experienced struggle, doubt, and heartache. In fact, we learn that in many ways they’re not all that differ-ent from you and me. Narrating her own winding pilgrim-age through faith, Karen Marsh reveals surprising lessons in everyday spirituality from these “saints”— folks who lived and breathed, and failed and followed God. Told with humor and vulnerability, Vintage Saints and Sinners introduces us afresh to twenty-five brothers and sisters who challenge and inspire us with their honest faith. Join Karen on her journey with the likes of Augustine, Broth-er Lawrence, and Saint Francis, as well as Amanda Berry Smith, Søren Kierkegaard, Dorothy Day, Howard Thurman, Flannery O’Conner, and many more. HIGH SCHOOL SPECIAL EVENTS Spring Retreat R May 3-5, 2019 Fee: $140 Mark your calendars now for the Spring Retreat. It is the most fun you can pack into a weekend! These retreats are excellent for getting away from the daily pace of life and having a fun and meaningful time with your friends in High School Ministry. Check-in begins at 5:30 p.m.

Spring Retreat Celebration Ceremony May 4, 6:00-9:00 p.m. at Camp Friendship All families and friends are invited to attend the Celebra-tion Ceremony on Saturday, May 4th at 6:00 p.m. in the DeGross Center at Camp Friendship, where each high school student will be recognized for their participation this year. The opportunity to take time to celebrate our faith community and allow each high school student to share their commitment to their own faith is profound. We also believe that the support and presence of family and friends is important and vital, as we communicate to each high school student how much we care about the steps they are taking in their faith. A map to camp and other important information is available on the High School Ministry homepage.

Senior Night Sunday, May 19, 6:00-9:00 p.m. Our opportunity to celebrate the Class of 2019 and show them how much we love them! The evening will include dinner, time to enjoy each other, and a fun program that will celebrate each of the seniors for the great people that they are. All 9th, 10th and 11th grade students are invited to attend the event and even serve at it, with leadership from the 11th grade, Disciples Class. Please join us on Sunday, May 19 in Mithun Hall.

Bridge Builders Service Opportunities Our Bridge Builders Ministry is a great way for students to fundraise and participate in meaningful service at the same time. Students can participate in service projects and leadership roles and earn mission dollars that can be used toward High School Ministry’s retreats, mission trip, Colorado Senior Trip, and Summer Camp. Look for the Sign-up Genius link for all the Service Opportunities available on the High School Ministry homepage.

WORK CREW AT SUMMER CAMP R Current 9th-12th grade students can apply to serve through our Work Crew Ministry. We hope that, in addition to attending a High School camp session, campers take the opportunity for an extended ser-vice-based faith experience. Each session consists of 8-12 students who devote two camp sessions to serving God, the camp, and the campers. By doing much of the behind-the-scenes work that enables camp to run so smoothly, the participants learn how to give of themselves without seeking credit or praise. The Work Crew experience is the next step after a session at camp, in pursuit of a deeper understanding of faith and faithful living through the example of Jesus. Then, in small groups, we will explore the week’s Bible story in a concrete, hands-on experience with our leaders.

INTERFAITH ENGAGEMENT MINISTRY The newly formed Interfaith Engagement Ministry has been blessed by the support of pastoral and lay leaders. We have already supported several well-attended events, and this Spring will host additional occasions for you to further grow your interfaith understanding. The ministry strives to identify and organize diverse, informative, and enjoyable opportunities for WCC members and the broader community to learn more about other faith traditions and participate in events with those of other religious beliefs. In so doing we hope that this strengthens each person’s own relationship with God. We hope you find something of interest, and invite your ideas for additional programming in the months ahead.

Roundtable: Turning Hate Into Love Sunday, March 3 1:00-3:00 p.m., Mithun Hall We live in an increasingly divisive and hate-filled country and world. Racism, religious fanaticism, intolerance of sexual orientation and many other deeply held prejudices have created an unprece-dented need to find a way for us to accept others who are different from ourselves, and learn how to live together. This roundtable will explore this topic from Christian, Jewish and Muslim perspectives. Presentations will be followed by small group discussions during which refresh-ments will be provided.

Serve Our CommunityFamilies Moving Forward March 10-17 and May 19-26 Wayzata Community Church will host several homeless families during the week of March 10 and during the week of May 19. The families that are a part of Families Moving Forward are housed in churches while Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative helps them find per-manent homes. FMF guests go to work, school or to a day center during the day and ride a bus to our church, arriving a little before 6:00 p.m. each night. We will be looking for 80 to 90 volunteers each week to help set up or take down sleeping rooms, make and serve dinners, prepare Saturday breakfast, play with the kids, spend the night as a host, or to do laundry or donate food. You can sign up to help by visiting a ta-ble in Founders Hall before and after Sunday services starting about three weeks before the host week.
