ABOUT THE WARRIORSCorban University enters the game with a 16-5 overall record and a 10-2 Cascade Collegiate Conference record. Th e No. 13 Warriors have won six straight games, and 12 of the past 13 games. Corban leads NAIA Div. 2 in blocks per game (7.9), defensive rebounds per game (33.2) and total blocks (167). Th e Warriors are also second in the country in fi eld goal per-centage defense (0.325), third in total rebounds per game (47.1) and assists per game (18.4). Emily Tsugawa leads the nation in total assists (140) and assists per game (6.7). Tara Van-weerdhuizen broke the school record in blocks in a single season. Th e freshman is second in the country in blocks (87) and blocks per game (4.1). She is also third in the country total rebounds per game (11.6). Katie Steigleman averages 20.0 points per outing.

LAST TIME OUTTh e No. 8 Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team used late free throws to beat Th e Evergreen State College Saturday, 54-53. Eastern’s Dominique Johnson scored two of her game-high 21 points with 2.4 seconds remaining in regulation to give EOU the fi nal one-point lead. Johnson was 7-of-13 from the fi eld, including 3-for-5 from behind the perimeter. Th e redshirt freshman was also 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Chayla Jones added nine points and eight rebounds. Jorie Freeman also had eight rebounds. Th e Mountaineers were 38 percent from the fi eld, 6-of-15 from three-point range, and 12-for-18 from the free-throw line. EOU also had a 32-31 rebound advantage. Eastern committed 14 turnovers, while Ever-green had 13. Th e Mountaineers are also now 15-0 against TESC all-time in La Grande. Th e Geoducks were led by Danielle Swain’s 18 points and nine rebounds.

MOUNTAINEERS REMAIN AT EIGHT IN POLLTh e Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team remained No. 8 in the NAIA Div. 2 Top 25, which was released Monday. Th e Mountaineers picked up their sixth straight win Saturday, and stay at the highest ranking in school history. EOU defeated Northwest Uni-versity and Th e Evergreen State at home Friday and Saturday. Eastern has won its last three games by a combined fi ve points, and four of its past fi ve games by four points or less. East-ern Oregon is joined in the latest national poll by Friday’s opponent, Corban University. Th e Warriors are one spot shy of equaling their highest rank in school history. Corban moved from No. 14 to No. 13 this week. Th e College of Idaho, Warner Pacifi c and Oregon Tech all are receiving votes.

SHOWDOWN IN SALEMTh e Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team and Corban University meet Friday at 5:30 p.m. Th e matchup pits the top two teams in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Th e winner will be in sole possession of fi rst place with two weekends left in the regular season aft er this weekend’s games. In one of the few times in CCC history, the game features a pair of top 15 teams. No. 8 EOU and the No. 13 Warriors both enter the game on a six-game win streak. Corban is 10-1 inside the C.E. Jeff ers Gymnasium, while Eastern is 12-2 away from La Grande. Th e Mountaineers have won four of the past fi ve meetings at Corban, but lost last season in Salem. Th e Warriors won the fi rst meeting earlier this season in La Grande. EOU is fi rst in the conference in scoring off ense, while Corban is second in NAIA Div. 2 in fi eld goal percentage defense.

ABOUT THE BEACONSNorthwest Christian University comes into the weekend 9-15 overall and 1-11 in conferene play. Th e Beacons are led by Lindsey Shearer’s 13.79 points, 9.38 rebounds, 3.88 assists, and 2.96 steals per game. Her steals average leads the conference. She is fourth in NAIA Div. 2 in defensive rebounds per outing (7.6), sixth in total steals (71) and ninth in total rebounds (225). Jess Anderson is adding 10.65 points per game and Aly Bruns is averaging 9.75 points per game. NCU is eighth in the nation three-point fi eld goal percentage defense (0.257). Th e Beacons are 2-5 inside the Morse Events Center this season. Northwest Christian has lost nine of its last 10 games. NCU went 1-3 last week with a win at Evergreen, and losses against Northwest and Corban.

AROUND THE CASCADE

Chelsey Christensen, Warner Pacifi c, GChristensen guided the Knights to a weekend sweep at home over Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech. She totaled 38 points and 16 rebounds in the pair of victories. Th e junior shot 55 percent from the fi eld, made 4-of-8 from three-point range and hit all four of her free-throw attempts.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET ...WARRIORS UPSET EOU WOMEN IN LA GRANDEJan. 7, 2012

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Th e No. 22 Corban University women’s basketball team upset No. 9 Eastern Oregon University Saturday, 73-59.

Th e Warriors (11-5, 5-2 Cascade Collegiate Confer-ence) knocked off EOU for the third straight time aft er dropping the previous seven meetings. Corban held the Mountaineers to a season-low 8.3 percent from behind the arc, a program-low in the past fi ve years.

Eastern Oregon entered the game fi rst in the confer-ence averaging 6.73 made three-pointers per game, but fi nished 2-of-24 from three-point range Saturday. Th e Mountaineers were third in the CCC in three-point fi eld goal percentage at 30 percent. Against Corban, EOU was 32 percent from the fi eld and another season-low, 9-for-21 from the free-throw line.

Corban’s Shayla Fetters’ entered the game averaging eight points a contest, but fi nished with a game-high 20 points. Th e senior was 7-of-12 from the fi eld, including 3-for-4 from behind the perimeter. She also had a game-high six assists.

Emily Tsugawa added 17 points and fi ve assists for the Warriors. Tess Bennett had 14 points and 15 rebounds. Tara Vanweerdhuizen chipped in 14 points and four blocks.

Eastern Oregon jumped out to a 7-2 advantage, but the Warriors responded with a 13-2 run. Corban had its

largest lead of the fi rst half, 18-11, aft er a free-throw from Tsugawa with 10:40 remaining in the fi rst half. EOU answered with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 20. Th e game would be tied three times and have three lead changes before the end of the half, but the Warriors took a 32-28 lead into halft ime.

Corban opened the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 10-point advantage. Th e Warriors had their largest lead of the game at the 9:31 mark of the second half, 55-39. Eastern went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes. Th e Mountaineers came no closer and Corban would pull away.

Tina Miller led EOU (13-4, 6-2) with a season-high 13 points. Th e sophomore was 6-of-14 from the fi eld. She threw a team-high three assists. Kyle Miller fi nished with 11 points and Brooke Randall had 10 points. Jorie Freeman recorded a season-high 12 rebounds.

Th e Warriors shot 47 percent from the fi eld, 6-for-13 from three-point range, and 11-of-18 from the free-throw line. Corban had 17 assists, compared to the Mountaineers’ 10. Eastern outrebounded the Warriors, 48-44, and forced 17 Corban turnovers. EOU commit-ted 11 turnovers.

Th e Warriors entered the game as the top team in NAIA Div. 2 in blocks per game averaging seven a contest. Saturday, Corban had seven blocks, but Eastern fi nished with eight.

EASTERN WOMEN BEST BEACONS AT HOMEJan. 6, 2012

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Th e No. 9 Eastern Oregon Uni-versity women’s basketball team stayed atop the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings with a 71-60 win over Northwest Christian University Friday.

Th e Mountaineers (13-3, 6-1 Cascade Collegiate Con-ference) were led by an 18-point performance from Kyle Miller. Th e senior was 6-of-13 from the fi eld, including 2-for-2 from behind the arc. It was the 52nd time in her career she has reached double-digits in scoring.

Brooke Randall added 17 points for Eastern. Th e junior was 7-for-14 from the fi eld. Nicole Redd scored 10 points. Tina Miller threw a season-high six assists, and Korrie Bourn matched a season-high 13 rebounds.

Eastern Oregon fi nished 45 percent from the fi eld. Th e Mountaineers were 5-of-19 from three-point range and 8-for-13 from the free-throw line. EOU outrebounded the Beacons, 45-27. Eastern forced 17 turnovers, but committed 16.

Northwest Christian opened the game leading the fi rst seven minutes of the contest. Th e Beacons’ largest lead

in the fi rst half was 6-2. Th e Mountaineers took their fi rst lead with 12:36 left in the fi rst half aft er a pair of Kyle Miller free throws. A Kyle Miller jumper at the 4:44 mark of the half gave EOU its largest lead of the period, 32-23. Eastern had a 36-28 lead at halft ime.

Th e Beacons opened the second half on a 13-4 run to take the lead three minutes into the period. Th e lead changed six times over the next three minutes. Th e game was tied at 50 at the 12:53 mark of the second half aft er a jumper from Martha Taylor. Th e Mountaineers went on an 11-0 run to begin pulling away. EOU led by as many as 15 points in the second half, 71-56, with 2:44 left in regulation.

Jess Anderson led NCU (8-10, 0-6) with 17 points. Th e senior was 7-of-16 from the fi eld, including 3-for-6 from behind the perimeter. Lindsey Shearer added 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds and fi ve assists.

Northwest Christian shot 40 percent from the fi eld, 8-of-19 from three-point range, and 8-for-12 from the free-throw line. Th e Beacons shot 47 percent from the fi eld in the fi rst half.

WEEK TWELVE: CORBAN AND NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN

BASKETBALL HAS WEEKLY SHOWTh e Eastern Oregon University basketball programs will have their own radio talk show on Monday’s 12-1 p.m. on KUBQ 98.7 FM. Every show will be podcasted on EOUSports.com by the following morning. Mountaineer fans can tune into 98.7 FM and listen to EOU basket-ball analysis, game recaps, game previews, and interviews with coaches and players. Th e whole hour is devoted to Eastern Oregon women’s and men’s basketball. Th e show provides recaps of the previous weekend’s games and previews the upcoming weekend games. Th e show has inter-views with coaches’ and analysis from the show’s hosts. EOU Assistant Athletic Director, Barrett Henderson and John Mallory, will co-host each broadcast each week.

EOU LANDS TRIO ON CCC LISTKorrie Bourn, Kyle Miller, and Brooke Randall were each tabbed preseason All-Conference per-formers by the CCC head coaches. EOU was one of two schools to land three players to the pre-season list. Miller, a senior, averaged 11.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game last season. Bourn and Randall were the only newcomers on the list aft er transferring to Eastern from Spokane Falls Community College. Corban University’s Katie Steigleman was voted the CCC’s Preseason Player of the Year.

EASTERN TABBED SECOND IN CCCTh e Eastern Oregon University women’s basket-ball team was selected second in the Cascade Collegiate Conference preseason coaches’ poll. With fi rst-place votes from six coaches, Corban University is the preseason choice to win the conference title. Eastern Oregon and Warner Pacifi c split the remaining four fi rst-place votes, with the Mountaineers and Knights picking up two each. EOU and WPC each tallied 82 points to share second in the preseason ranking.

FREE ADMISSION WITH CAN DONATIONTh e Eastern Oregon University Sports Informa-tion and Marketing Department have an-nounced a chance for free admission to the rest of the regular season basketball games in Quinn Coliseum. Mountaineer fans can attend the fi nal four EOU regular season doubleheaders by bringing at least two non-perishable food items before halft ime of the women’s games. In return for the donation, fans will receive a complimen-tary general admission ticket. Th e Mountaineers will be a part of the seventh annual EOU Food Drive from Jan. 31 to Feb. 28. Eastern Oregon Athletics is trying to reach its goal of 2,000 pounds of goods to donate to the Union County Food Bank.
