Guide for Corporate Sponsors 2012

My employer provided funding for my studies at WBS and the flexibility to attend the residential sessions. I made the commitment of time and energy to complete my studies whilst successfully supervising a department.

In return for their investments, my sponsoring organisation gained a more knowledgeable and engaged leader. Right from the beginning of the programme, I was able to work more effectively with our largest global clients, aligning our services and solutions to address their unique business needs.

Any sponsoring organisation will quickly realise the benefits of the Warwick MBA, as their participant returns with a wealth of business knowledge and a global network of relationships with professors and students.

Most importantly, a sponsor can benefit from their participant’s dissertation, which allows the employee to apply their newly acquired skills to real-life business issues.

After graduation, I assumed a senior leadership role in the organisation managing our largest region of clients and developing a talented team of colleagues. The investment of time and money in my Warwick MBA was truly invaluable.

Joseph E. Lee MBA (Warwick) Senior Vice President, Professional Services CS STARS, a Marsh & McLennan Company

New ideas, that workFresh thinking will make an immediate positive impact on your organisation. Just one innovative idea that works for you could pay for the entire sponsorship.

Participants bring back to their organisation many proven tools, ideas and best practice as well as the ability to apply them.

They learn not only from our leading international professors, but also from their highly experienced peer group.

Strengthen leadership talentThe Warwick MBA can play a crucial role in your strategy for retaining key people and their knowledge within your organisation, supporting a leadership or management development strategy while furthering an individual’s career plan.

In-house consultancyYour participants will address current work issues both in the class environment and as part of their ongoing assessments. The culmination and consolidation of the Warwick MBA experience rest with the final project and dissertation where your participant will work with your organisation and a member of our faculty on an agreed strategic issue to directly benefit your business.

Networking & shared learningOur participants have an average of 10 years’ managerial experience in a wide variety of international sectors and disciplines. Sharing this professional experience within the classroom is crucial to grounding the Warwick MBA in the realities of the workplace; our teaching encourages both collaboration and teamwork.

This valuable network and knowledge base continues long after graduation. WBS has nearly 29,000 alumni in 142 countries, around 9,000 of whom are graduates from the Warwick MBA.

The value of the Warwick MBA

FlexibilityThe Warwick MBA is one of the most flexible programmes in the world, with a common curriculum available across three different study modes: full-time, executive, and distance learning.

If a participant’s circumstances change they can move from one mode to another, and they can also switch delivery format for individual elective modules to accommodate personal or workplace demands.

The Warwick Global Energy MBA has been designed to allow participants to plan their workload well ahead. We use our executive study mode which features residential sessions and online learning to offer flexible yet structured education.

I was looking for a world-class business programme I could pursue while still working in the field I’m passionate about, humanitarian aid. The Warwick MBA’s flexible programme was perfect. I relished being part of a truly international intake and learned a huge amount about teamwork and management skills.

Marwa Bouka MBA (Warwick) Resources Management Officer United Nations World Food Programme, Syria

I chose the Warwick Global Energy MBA because I have confidence in the level of academic quality delivered by WBS. Working in the energy sector, I feel that the specific industry focus, along with the qualifications of an MBA, will put me in a strong position for the future. I also feel that the professional international relationships which will develop through this programme will be more relevant for me professionally than those of a standard MBA.

Lars Bregnbæk Senior Consultant, Ea Energy Analyses

Ea Energy Analyses is a global oriented company focused on advanced energy and climate analyses. The Warwick Global Energy MBA is an excellent opportunity for our employees to gain deeper insight into the mechanisms and drivers of the international energy scene, and for enlarging our important network of energy professionals.

6 | The Warwick MBA 2011 Guide for corporate sponsors

For your employees, the Warwick MBA will:

h promote a strategic overview by integrating the different elements of business

h encourage them to acquire deeper knowledge of your company, your competitors, and the industry sector

h improve soft skills such as team working, time management, presentation, and report writing

h use group work to sharpen skills in outcome-orientated problem-solving and multicultural cross-functional teamworking

h give exposure to other industries, corporate cultures, and experiences

h offer opportunities for networking with experts and participants from other fields and cultures.

The practical impact

Your employee will be able to impact on your business:

h by practically applying the latest business and management thinking from leading practitioners and researchers

h by conveying new knowledge to colleagues and the rest of the organisation.

The benefits for your organisation will include:

h better overall performance

h increased retention and motivation

h better understanding of the challenges reshaping your industry

h current work issues addressed in class, syndicate groups, and through written assignments

h an in-organisation project exploring real challenges facing your organisation.

My organisation was very supportive; I was encouraged by people from the Chairman and Chief Executive right through to the workers at the sharp end. Network Rail was also great about providing the time off I needed for my studies, and the projects to develop my knowledge, and people were genuinely happy to help with providing data or information I needed for my work.

I was surprised by the immediacy with which I was able to apply my learning. There were several projects where I gained a different insight fundamental to analysing that problem or developing a solution. I was also able to develop my understanding and network of contacts within the business through the assignments which took me out of my particular function.

I enjoyed meeting people from various countries and business backgrounds; they gave a different perspective on the module content. The syndicate groups also allowed me to exercise leadership skills in an environment where I was simultaneously challenged and supported.

Amey provides a wide range of services to the public sector. It is critical for our leaders to have the generic strategic skills to adapt the company to the increasingly challenging business environment.

Through long-term investment and providing the opportunities to develop our employees, we are able to maximise the performance of the business.

Nick Gregg Managing Director – Local Government, Amey Plc

Amey PlcAmey sponsored my studies and was very supportive and flexible as I juggled the competing demands of the programme, my work, and my family.

I aligned my project with a work stream that would be invaluable for my company, and wrote a powerful report of real value to my employer. It was a challenging experience, however it gave me the confidence to put myself forward for a new role within Amey to lead a high-profile and pioneering project. I know that the qualities my project experience strengthened, such as endurance and persistence, will allow this new endeavour to succeed.

WBS broadened my understanding of the wider business world. I am now a much more rounded manager. I believe my colleagues are benefiting from my broader perspective and more confident leadership. I think I have a lot more to offer Amey now.

Mike Notman MBA (Warwick) Project Director Amey Plc

The partnership

We encourage the close involvement of sponsors with the Warwick MBA programme. We believe that participation is a three-way partnership between your organisation, your participant, and WBS.

As part of this partnership, we are happy to offer guidance on the selection of candidates as well as opportunities for in-company knowledge sharing to enable you to maximise your investment.

Obviously you must consider the financial and time implications of sponsoring study, but other forms of support may also be required. For example, you may need to enable your participant to access areas of your organisation beyond their usual role or remit. You might want to offer them enhanced responsibilities to reflect their new skills, or facilitate a mentor arrangement with a senior colleague to encourage discussion of their career prospects.

The more support you can offer your participant, the more we can help you both maximise the return on your investment… and the more your business will benefit from the Warwick MBA.

ScottishPower Iberdrola GroupThe Warwick Global Energy MBA offers me the advantage of working towards a postgraduate qualification where I can apply my ongoing new knowledge and learning to my day-to-day role while also helping shape my future career.

It’s already proven to be a good choice as I’ve had the opportunity to meet a group of people from around the world and across many energy sectors. We all have invaluable knowledge and experience to share with each other.

Lynda Clayton Head of Operational Planning, ScottishPower Iberdrola Group

Iberdrola has worked closely with WBS over the last two years. We see the Warwick Global Energy MBA as a great vehicle for talent development across the Group which complements our own programmes and brings people together from the different countries in which we operate. This programme is of specific interest to us because of its focus on MBA business fundamentals coupled with a broad focus on the energy sector and the significant challenges facing it.

The programme gives our participants the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge of the global energy market through having access to high quality learning materials and through close collaboration with people from other sectors in the energy industry. Our aim is to broaden both the outlook of our participants and their commercial knowledge.

Ignacio Ruiz De Miguel, Group Director, Leadership & Talent Management, Iberdrola SA

Vax LtdVax funded my place on the Warwick MBA to support my career development. The company benefits from the holistic nature of a general management education by developing and retaining high performers.

I am developing my strategic thinking and gaining a broader appreciation of business and how it operates, not only from the lectures but also from other members of my cohort. The networking opportunity presented is invaluable, as it provides insights into how other businesses operate. These learnings have helped me develop a wider knowledge base, and also to think differently about issues or projects.

The Board is very supportive and interested in how I am progressing and I have discussed assignments and sought guidance from many different departments which has been invaluable. I am also able to share my insights and new knowledge with colleagues and so improve the value that I can add to my team.

Naomi Martin Head of Marketing, Vax Limited

We have three employees on the Warwick MBA programme this year. At Vax, in this time of growth, it is essential that we continue to develop strategic insight and thinking amongst our senior team, and to broaden their functional expertise.

The Warwick MBA enables us to build on these important skill sets and to enhance the strategic capability of those individuals on the programme. This brings clear benefits to the company as it enables our people to look more widely at the overall business, with fewer tendencies to view their departments in isolation. It has also enabled those individuals to gain important insights into other businesses so that they can identify best practice externally and bring new ideas to Vax.

In order to further grow our talent pipeline from within, we plan to continue our relationship with WBS and the Warwick MBA programme.

Ways to study & commitment needed

We deliver the Warwick MBA in three different formats, sharing the same curriculum, which you can mix and match. Each study mode requires different levels of attendance at WBS.

We also offer an energy industry specific programme, the Warwick Global Energy MBA.

Kick StartFast track your employee’s study by allowing them to join us full-time for the Autumn term, September-December, to complete five of their seven core modules. They will also be able to sample our practical module, The Practice of Management, which addresses the ‘soft skills’ of management including interpersonal communications, teamwork, and leadership.

w warwickmba.com/go/kickstart

Executive MBAExecutive MBA participants attend WBS for a week at a time at regular intervals to explore a subject in depth. This face-to-face tuition is supplemented by extensive pre-reading and post-module assignments. It’s an immersive method of study using practice-oriented assessment; participants not only use case studies, but also reflect on practice in their organisation. So, the learning goes back into your workplace – immediately and practically.

w warwickmba.com/go/exec

Distance learningDistance learners study at their own pace using study resources developed by our faculty. Typically they’ll spend 10–15 hours a week studying. We help set up local study groups to share experiences within their region.

They’ll also learn extensively online. Our virtual classroom, wbsLive, provides real-time interaction between participants, tutors, and members of our team, via tools such as multi-way audio, video, text chat, and shared documents.

Distance learners will also attend up to three Warwick Weeks and one compulsory five-day module during their studies. They’ll never feel far away with our blended learning style.

w warwickmba.com/go/distance

The Warwick Global Energy MBAOur part-time programme combines the development of strategic leadership skills offered by the Warwick MBA with a focus on the international energy industry. We’ll give your managers a broader understanding of your industry, and develop their critical thinking.

Participants study nine core and four elective modules through blended learning, including eight residential sessions and online education. We’ll teach them to overcome the challenges that are reshaping the energy industry across the world and defining its future – your future.

The Warwick MBA enabled me to introduce new strategic insights, analytical tools, and concepts into my work which helped me to provide advice to clients at a very senior level, within a more palatable and commercial context.

Not only this, but WBS has helped me with new skills in the management of a diverse and rapidly growing consultancy business.

Guy Mercer MBA (Warwick) Associate Director, Atkins Environment

wbsLive is an innovative method of delivering lectures over the internet; not only could I watch and listen to the lecturer live but I could ask questions and benefit from feedback from the lecturer and my peers. We could even have group discussions which proved to be very helpful, and if you miss the session you can always go back and watch the archived session which is great! I think it is a wonderful experience and recommend it to anyone.

I work for a multicultural company, so it was hugely beneficial for me to see how different organisations incorporate multicultural employment regimes. My dissertation led to the creation of a model framework that enabled me to play a key role in the acquisition of two companies and plan their subsequent integration.

WBS encouraged me to ask searching questions, to understand the rationale behind various decision-making processes, and cemented my position as a decision-maker within our business.

Tobias Hunt MBA (Warwick Senior Vice President, Hill International (UK) Ltd

The knowledge Toby gained through the Warwick MBA was often immediately used in our organisation. Often it enabled us to review our own internal management and organisational processes and practices. His access to various financial databases and his analysis of specific financial data allowed us to comprehensively assess the true ‘value’ of at least five acquisition targets and opportunities.

Renny Borhan Senior Vice President & Managing Director Construction Claims & Consulting Group Hill International Inc.

The consultancy project

Many projects undertaken by participants within their companies involve access to confidential data, plans, and strategies. Complete confidentiality is respected. Completed consultancy project dissertations will not be placed in a library, or released for wider readership, without the prior consent of your organisation.

Your organisation will receive a high quality report from your participant and will benefit from the input of research findings and best practice from top business academics. Many projects have had a significant impact on strategic decisions and have directly added value.
