    Rocky River IBA Update

    By Diane Sigler, IBA Coordinator

    Its official! The first Rocky RiverImportant Bird Area (IBA) ForestBird Survey was conducted June 1through July 15, 2006. The West-ern Cuyahoga Audubon Society(WCAS), in association with theCleveland Metroparks, assembleda multitude of dedicated volun-teers, to survey sixty locationsthroughout the Rocky River Wa-tershed. The volunteers collectedbird abundance data at pointcount stations under strict proto-cols to ensure that data collectiontechniques did not vary between

    Observers. The protocols weredesigned to ensure consistentdata collection through the dura-tion of this breeding season sur-vey.Long range objectives of the sur-vey include assessing the abun-dance of forest breeding birdpopulations; monitoring changesof the population over time;evaluating habitat, land use andother local factors that impactpositively or negatively on breed-ing birds now or in the future;

    and communicating the results tothose in the community who have apotential impact on the habitat andbreeding bird populations in thesetargeted areas.

    The data collected will be assessedand findings will be incorporated intofuture environmental and land usepractices.WCAS and Cleveland Metroparksthank all those who assisted in thissurvey at whatever level, and alsothose who continue to provide sup-port. We value your dedication andlook forward to your continued in-volvement.

    Native habitats can easily be im-pacted by what people plant on theirproperty. Whether this impact ispositive or negative is determined bythe plant species that are introducedin an area. With this in mind, an in-formation card was developed thatidentifies recommended native plantsthat attract birds and butterflies; aswell as listing non-native invasiveplants to avoid that harm Ohiosnatural habitats.

    The card was developed throughsponsorship by WCAS, ClevelandMuseum of Natural History, NRCS,EarthWatch Ohio, and Audubon atHome. To receive your card andgive the birds and butterflies a help-ing hand, contact Terri Martincic at440-759-8220. To help spread theword, ask for several and after attain-ing permission, drop them off at com-munity centers, libraries, schools,garden centers and anywhere elsethat would reach people who plant.

    Recommended Native Plants:Bluestem; Milkweed; Flowering Dog-wood; Coneflower; Joe-Pye Weed;Blazing Star; Spice Bush; Beebalm;Virginia Creeper; Vervain; Ironweed;Green Headed Coneflower; Maple-leafed Viburnum.

    Non-Native Invasive Plants to Avoid: Tree-of-Heaven; Barberry;Vetch; Russian Olive; English Ivy;Privet; Honeysuckle; Purple Loose-strife; Pachysandra; Reed Canary

    Grass; Knotweed; Buckthorn; Myrtle(Vinca minor ).

    Introduced invasive plants can and dotake over areas robbing valuable habi-

    tat from native species. A very clearexample of this occurring is in severalof the natural areas around town.

In addition,

    AUDUBON ADVENTURES is aligned to nationalstandards for science and language arts.

    32 students. The 2006-2007 edition is called"Wings and Things" with topics including birds, batsand bees. The contents of one classroom kit in-cludes:

    Great Backyard Bird Count Getting Started CD- available upon request.

    WCAS has limited funds to provide free kits toschools (public, private, parochial or home-school). To spread the educational benefits evenmore, an AUDUBON ADVENTURES kit could bemade available to the school's library or mediacenter so many educators could take advantageof the information.

    Another way to share AUDUBON ADVENTURESis to sponsor a classroom kit to a teacher orschool library of your choice. To order contactNancy Howell at 440-891-1710 or 216-231-4600ext. 3225. It's a worthwhile investment for lifelonglearning.
