Darnell Worley III

I remember being told by

Mrs. Thayer that I would

have to play this one

section of Pachabel’s

Canon 100x on repeat. I

think this was my very

first concert, and my

kindergarten self broke

down in my lesson and

bawled his eyes out. I

was CERTAIN I wasn’t

going to make it through

the concert. Well…here

we are - alive and well

thirteen years later.

Favorite Music Memory

Hands down, my favorite

performance was playing

Theme from Schindler’s

List with Mrs. Dunlap. I’d

be remiss if I didn’t

mention the VERY close

second: Radioactive with

ENCORE for NOMA.

Learn to love whatever

song you’re working on.

And don’t ever voluntarily

learn Bach’s Partita

No. 3. (just kidding)

My favorite orchestra

memories are from

going on tour to

Washington DC and

playing in front of the

Lincoln Memorial. It

was very peaceful.

Favorite Music Memory

My two favorite

orchestra pieces were

Warrior Legacy and

the John Williams

Enjoy playing

music!

My favorite

performance at WCS

is the 2019-2020

Christmas concert

where we played the

percussion feature

piece.

Favorite Music Memory

My favorite song I

performed is Brazilian

Bell Carol.

I would tell young

students to not just be

satisfied by being

able to play the piece.

Be able to not only

make it through the

piece but to be able to

play it musically.

“Connor showed a lot of maturity in returning to the band as a senior. I am so glad he did. He added much to the percussion section and the Pep Band as well. I hope senior year is what you think of in the years to come. I will be sharing your story for many years.”

Favorite Music Memory

My favorite song I

played is Warrior

Legacy.

Be confident, have

fun, and do your part

in practicing.

Remember that it is a

privilege to learn to

play music, but it’s an

even greater privilege

to share and perform

music to others.

Peter Johnson

My favorite

performance at WCS

was when the pep

band played at a

basketball game. I

cannot remember the

exact game, but I do

remember that Ben

Johnson made a half

court shot. This is my

favorite because it was

a ton of fun to play,

and it was also a good

game.

Favorite Music Memory

My favorite piece we

performed is Brazilian

Bell Carol.

Always have fun.

There are a lot of

times where you

might think that the

performance, or

practices will be

boring and don't want

to go, but for the most

part they are some of

the best experiences

you will have.

“I will always remember Peter for his servant leadership and willingness to adapt and help in any way he could. I am so glad he raised his hand when I was looking for a trumpet player to switch to percussion so that we could cover the parts. Who knew how that initiative was going to grow the percussion section into one of our strongest sections and inspire the goal of a complete set of new instruments. Thanks Peter.”

My favorite memories

are playing music and

having fun on band

tour.

Favorite Music Memory

My favorite song I

played is Hallelujah

Chorus.

Keep working at it. It

might be tough when

you can't get that one

part down, but putting

in countless hours on

your instrument truly

does pay off. The

lessons you learn in

the long run are so

worth the dedication

that you put in now.

Jackson Kuphal

My favorite performance

memory was

coincidentally my last

ever performance at

WCS. For NOMA, I

played a piece that

means a lot to me named

Air Gai. I had been

accompanied by Mrs.

Vos, and although we

had limited time to

rehearse we pulled it off.

The sentimental piece

along with the excellent

musicianship made it

quite memorable for me.

Favorite Music Memory

Performing O What Child

Is This with the jazz band.

I don't normally smile while

on stage, but I clearly

remember doing so as we

made our way through the

song. The parts

intertwined together so

well, just as the sheet

music intended. On top of

that, I was playing my

euphonium rather than

trombone because we felt

the timbre better reflected

the atmosphere the song

was supposed to provide.

There are many angles I

could attack this question

from. I could make practice

habit recommendations, or I

could provide general tips

on how to improve but I

would be neglecting the

most crucial aspect of

artistry. It should be fun.

There is no point in making

art and making music if you

don't actually enjoy what

you do. Take time to reflect

and ask yourself if you really

enjoy making art, because if

you do, it will serve as a

lifelong joy.

My favorite performance at

WCS was when we

performed at the steps of

the Lincoln Memorial in

Washington D.C. It was an

honor being able to play for

random people we didn't

even know in front of one of

our greatest Presidents

ever. The whole tour

together is one of my

favorite memories at WCS. I

will forever remember

walking the streets looking

at the amazing history of the

United States with my

friends.

Favorite Music Memory

My favorite song I

performed at WCS is

Warrior Legacy, by Soon

Hee Newbold.

Don't worry about not

being good enough.

Everyone always has

room for improvement.

The memories I have

made I will cherish for the

rest of my life. If you

aren't in the performing

arts, you are definitely

missing out!

My favorite band

performance memories are

wearing sunglasses during

Eye of the Tiger in middle

school and playing The

Patriot at the Lincoln

Memorial during the Unite

Tour in Washington DC. I

am so grateful for the

lifelong memories and

friendships that I've built

with my "band buddies"

and thankful for the many

jokes I've shared with my

friends in choir throughout

the years!

Favorite Music Memory

My all time favorite band

song and performance

was playing the Brazilian

Bell Carol at the 2019

Christmas concert. My

favorite song from choir

was Hold Us Together,

which was super cool

performing on the 2018

choir tour at different

locations.

Younger students, make the

most of your experiences

and wholeheartedly pursue

your passions, whether it is

music or something else. If

you truly care about

something, stick with it and

challenge yourself to give

your best. With any goals

there will always be

challenges, but find the

courage to get back up after

failures and learn from your

mistakes!

My favorite memory was the latest

Christmas Concert at Valley

Chapel. At the time, I was

unaware that this would be one of

my last times performing for my

lifelong school, but it was also one

of my favorites anyways because

it was one where I was extra

excited to sing with Vocal

Ensemble since I loved the songs

we were performing. As a Senior,

I gained lots of confidence in

performing and this concert for me

represented a high point in my

growth, but I also made and grew

stronger with many of my friends

through these performances.

Favorite Music Memory

Be Thou My Vision with

Vocal Ensemble. I loved it

not only because I had the

solo, but I was able to enjoy

memories of a favorite hymn

of mine and my family. Even

though I performed it only

once, it was at a church

where I was able to also

make lasting memories with

my friends and appreciate

opportunities to perform

outside of school.

There were a lot of times I

remember when I felt like my

practicing or rehearsals were just

droning and pointless for me, but

looking back, I couldn’t have been

more wrong. Those sometimes

boring or tiring practices taught

me lessons in both music and

patience as well as perseverance

because I learned how to learn

music and be responsible. If

you’ve committed to a performing

arts program, stay with it because

they usually make great

memories, great friends, and

lessons in things you wouldn’t

expect.

My favorite memory

about being in choir is

the friendly

atmosphere and

getting to learn and

laugh with fellow class

mates. My thing or

memory in art is

challenging myself

and becoming a

better artist with the

help of amazing

teachers.

Favorite Music Memory

My favorite piece that

we performed was

probably the medley

from The Greatest

Showman. I had a

wonderful time

learning and

performing that song.

It was a lot of fun!

Piece of advice for

younger students

would say don’t be

My favorite performance

memory at WCS was

competing at the International

Championship of High School

Acapella my sophomore year.

That was the most fun I have

ever had on a stage and I

really enjoyed performing with

Encore Vocal Ensemble. I was

surrounded by the people that

meant the most to me doing

what I absolutely love and

what brings me the most joy,

singing.

Favorite Music Memory

My favorite song I

performed while at

WCS was Run to You

by Pentatonix. I

performed this song my

freshman year in

Encore and it has been

a song that has stuck

with me throughout the

years.

You should try to get involved in

as much of the music

department as possible. It is

such a great way to meet new

friends and to create amazing

music with awesome people. If

you have a great voice, can play

an instrument, or love to act,

definitely get involved in Band,

Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Jazz

Band, Drama, or Chapel Band. I

have met some of the most

important people in my life

through Vocal Ensemble and

Drama and I am so thankful that

I was involved in music

throughout high school at WCS.
