WE ARE SPRING 2020 WHAT HAPPENS EVERY DAY BECAUSE OF YOUR GENEROSITY danielkids.org facebook.com/danielkids @danielkids Where do Northeast Florida parents turn for help if their child happens to have a diagnosed mental health issue and a co-occurring mild-to- moderate intellectual difference – such as being on the autism spectrum? Right now, they have to travel as far as Orlando to get specialized help and in doing so, likely have to be separated from their child as he receives treatment. As the oldest child-service agency in Florida, Daniel has always evolved to meet the needs of our ever-changing community and this situation is no different. Daniel has been actively raising money to renovate our Creekside-Cedarwood cottage to help this underserved population. With proper renovations, we can create a comfortable, up-to-date environment in which we can serve up to 30 adolescents with these unique needs each year, providing behavioral analysis, psychiatric care, therapy, and academic and recreational services. However, we need your help to meet our goal. Please contact Madison Shelly at [email protected] or 904.296.1055 ext. 1031 to learn more about naming opportunities and other ways to give. Mallory McMillan gave birth to her youngest son just days before, but in June 2018 she found herself in yet another stand-off with her abusive husband who had just threatened to kill her and her children if she called the police. Her oldest son escaped through a window and ran for help. Police arrested McMillan’s husband and the Department of Children and Families (DCF) temporarily placed her children with family members. They assigned Daniel Caseworker, Faye Tims, to help McMillan meet the necessary goals to get her children back. McMillan worked diligently with Tims, took parenting classes and went to domestic violence support groups at Hubbard House. By early 2019, she had completed her case plan, passed the post-assessment and was preparing for her children’s return. While McMillan was still working with Tims, she also began working with Jahnee Carpenter, a Daniel post-reunification life coach. The Daniel post-reunification program is an initiative that helps parents keep their children from re-entering the foster care system by working with them during, and up to four months after, reunification. It’s offered exclusively by Daniel in Northeast Florida, serving up to 200 families annually. “My Daniel case worker and post reunification coach helped me prepare for reunification in ways that I will be forever grateful for,” McMillan said. Carpenter found affordable rental properties for McMillan and arranged for Daniel to pay the initial rental deposit. She also connected McMillan with daycare placements that matched her work schedule, offered transportation options and paved the way for her children to talk to counselors. McMillan’s divorce was recently finalized and she happily entered 2020 with a reunified, strengthened family. She worked hard to make it all happen, but shares some of the credit with Daniel. “They helped me realize my self-worth, and helped me walk away from my violent relationship all while learning to be a stronger parent on the way,” McMillan said. WHAT HAPPENS EVERY DAY BECAUSE OF YOUR GENEROSITY

danielkids.org facebook.com/danielkids @danielkids

Where do Northeast Florida parents turn for help if their child happens to have a diagnosed mental health issue and a co-occurring mild-to-moderate intellectual difference – such as being on the autism spectrum?

We share some of our clients’ most exciting triumphs, but another great way to showcase the broad reach of our successes to our supporters is through our numbers.
