Tishrei/Cheshvan - Kislev 5776

I write this as we head from the beautiful intensity of Yom Kippur to the fragile beauty of Sukkot. That fragility is given voice by Kohelet (Ecclesiastes), which is read during the chag.

The Byrds put Kohelet's beautiful words to music:

To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season And a time to every purpose under Heaven… A time to build up, a time to break down…

The Byrds (actually Pete Seeger) changed the lyrics around but either way Kohelet speaks to us.

If Yom Kippur is about stripping down the rickety constructions of the last year – the deceptions, the vanities, the failures, the misguided acts – and being totally vulnerable, then Sukkot is about starting to build back up with righteous simplicity.

We are to make our Sukkah comfortable enough to eat in it, sleep in it and invite guests over to celebrate. Yet to be kosher it must be impermanent – a brick sukkah won’t do. A sukkah’s fragility reminds us that we are part of the awesome cycle of birth and decay in the physical world.

A Time to Build

October - November 2015

Kohelet's opening words declaim the impermanence of all that is: Utter futility! All is futility! What value is there in any gain a person makes beneath the sun?

In Kohelet's vision we can emphasize the coming decay or the possibility of rebirth. As the trees and flowers explode in one final starburst of glorious color before a seemingly lifeless winter, Sukkot asks, “what comes next?”

Our morning prayers describe God as the one who “renews the work of creation each day, forever.” At each moment there is new life, new growth. We are through the High Holy Days; the self of the last year has retired, and the New Year brings rebirth. Do we have the courage to build in the face of this impermanence?

Sukkot pushes us beyond boundaries in our personal lives. It is a mitzvah to invite guests for a meal in a sukkah. Are there people you know who would be touched to be invited to your sukkah, or your home? Or maybe reaching out like that is something you need for you? As we rebuild in the New Year, aware of the fragility of our own lives, we respond with solidarity, love and welcoming.

But Sukkot also pushes us in our communal life. Our ancestors lived in sukkot as they fled Egyptian slavery. We are never to forget that suffering requires redemption and Sukkot must lead us to think of those who are

When you wa lk into the doors of Congregation

Shaarie Torah you are greeted by a group of people that love what they do and are happy to be doing it. Our staff are a group of dedicated members that have worked tremendously

hard to assure all the needs of the congregation are being met. Many levels of appreciation go to Kara, Brian, Sarah, Elizabeth, Dorice, Aleksey, Irina and Rabbi, as well as our cemetery staff Bill and Leo who have done remarkable work to make significate improvements at the cemetery.

I wish I could say that all our staff are full-time and maybe as we grow their hours will as well. Even if they do there is still never enough hours to get everything done. That is why we are so appreciative to the many fabulous volunteers that help us do the work we do.

Fellow Congregants,First, L'Shanah Tova. Happy, healthy, and a sweet New

Year to all of you and your families. Let’s all hope that this year is a revival year for the Shaarie Torah community.

How we do that is up to you, my fellow congregants. We want you to be a part of the activities of our synagogue.

There is a story about a synagogue in a certain city, that had daily minyans. Their services never lacked for at least ten congregants in attendance. The Rabbi decided to ask four of the attendees why they always came to services and most synagogue activities.

The first, Mylen remarked, "I come to services, because I’m a religious person, so I pray at my shul."

The second person, Ron said, "I come to services because I am retired, so it helps me start the day." The third person, David said, "I come to say Kaddish for my late father."

The fourth, Judy said, "I come to services because for a

short time, I’m with my own Jewish people, and that makes me feel good."

My point is that whatever your reason, all of you create our community and we love

that you come.

We have three weekly services plus, of course, Shabbat services with a wonderful kiddush. Once a month, a Musical Shabbat

service, once a month a Friday Night Dinner and service and once

a month, a Little Shabbat. Early in 2016 the Sisterhood will start their annual

Hamentaschen baking and sales. The Men’s Club is having a poker tournament and other activities. Our education and programing departments will have many exciting venues during the coming year. Also there are many committees you can be a part of.

Please my fellow congregants, become involved and become a part of Shaarie Torah’s future.Again, Happy New Year!Phil

seeking comfort and fleeing danger, and those within our community – in Portland and environs – who are literally without homes. How can we be healers? Builders? This is a Jewish response to impermanence: Ma’asim tovim, acts of goodness, which live beyond us.

This year, I would like to do some of this "building" in care of others in our community who are in need. I'm not yet sure how. If you'd like to help, please reach out at [email protected].

I love having good solid discussions with our teens - I recall one we had just last year about Hillel’s words

in Pirkai Avot 2:5 that stated “Do not separate yourself from the community.” The teens expressed their opinions regarding the need for a community to be Jewish. Why can’t we simply BE Jewish… what does that really mean? What do you think?

This past month as I saw all of our members and guests coming to the High Holy Days celebrations, enjoying one or more of our many activities, I once again confirmed my strong feelings of the need to belong to a community and not simply BE. People saw others who they had not seen for a long time, and they greeted one another like family. It was so good to see and hug one family who lost their uncle, and congratulate another who just had a baby. I saw an older couple who comes here every Shabbat approach a women who was pregnant and ask her when the baby is due. I saw teens that surrounded me at Ruach Minyan and sang as loud as I did. I looked at parents spending precious time with their kids, talking about values and ethics. And so, I was reminded of the quote from The Talmud, “When the community is in trouble, a person should not say, “I will go home and I will eat and drink and be at peace with myself.” Our members and friends care to share their news with one another, and to me this is the meaning of kehilah- a community!

So in this awesome spirit of community, I hope you will experience many avenues for learning that are palatable to your family’s needs and styles.

We have something for everyone here. There is Shabbat and Sunday preschool events, religious school learning on Sundays, the adventurous Portland Jewish Explorers, Wednesday Night School, Ruach Minyans on the first Shabbat of the month for adults and families, as well as our our USY/Kadima/Pre-Kadima events with our new advisor Sarah Rohr. Make sure you read what she has in store for our kids on page 12 & 13!

Until next time,Don’t be a stranger- we are a community after all!

The Carl PreschoolElizabeth Fleishman, The Carl Preschool Director

The preschool is off to a great start with over 25 children enrolled. We

have a wonderful group of families volunteering their time and energy. Last month, we talked about Jonah and the Big Fish, Noah’s Ark and the children worked very hard and were very attentive to learning

about the seven days of creation.

In addition, we experienced a working farm, where we went to learn about the fall harvest for Sukkot. We have been talking about seeds, autumn, and how hard a farmer has to work to provide us with a beautiful bounty! The weather even held up while we did this, and we had no soggy kids or parents. The children are now talking about mitzvahs. The holidays provided great timing for these discussions. They are learning a lot about themselves and how to be better people in the future. We will continue talking about mitzvah’s through out the year and find a special project for our school. In November we will think about being thankful and grateful for all the blessings we have been provided. We are having a wonderful experience with Rabbi Rose during our Shabbat every Friday at 12:45pm. He sings, reads stories, and talks with the children and parents. We even went adventuring in the Sukkah with Rabbi Rose. He showed the children the lulav and etrog. We all took turns shaking them and talked about all the wonderful stories in the Torah. Preschool Shabbat is open to all, and we hope you will bring your neighbors, family, friends, grandchildren or anyone you think that would enjoy. We meet upstairs in the foyer, and if you can’t find us, listen for a group of kids singing or laughing! One child told his parent that the Rabbi is funny and silly. Can it get any better than that? Thank you Rabbi!

SisterhoodMarsha Strongin, President

Shana Tova! We hope that you and your family had a joyous New Year celebration and an easy Yom Kippur fast.

Sisterhood has been the backbone of the synagogue’s kitchen, educational programs, and family activities for nearly a century. Sisterhood continues to donate to the Yom Kippur Appeal, sponsor kiddishes, Wednesday Night School kosher dinners, numerous educational activities, as well as fund building maintenance repairs and upgrades. We are gearing up for a new year with fresh, innovative ideas.

This year, the Sisterhood dues were included in the yearly synagogue mailer. If you haven’t already, we encourage you to return your annual dues and consider making an additional Donor Pledge to help the Sisterhood succeed. Dues are still only $25 a year.

We encourage women of all ages to participate in this important organization. Membership forms can

be downloaded from the Shaarie Torah website at: shaarietorah.org/sisterhood. There are plenty of opportunities for everyone and now is the perfect time to join!

One of the many amazing parts of the Sisterhood is the Gift Shop! Please visit by going to the second floor, near the Main Sanctuary. We continue to stock a variety of Judaica (and some non-Judaica) merchandise for every occasion – we have many new items including jewelry, holiday cards & other items, as well as host gifts & tchochkes. If we don’t have what you are looking for, we are happy to order whatever it is that you want from our specialty catalogs. As always, all proceeds go directly back to the shul’s educational programs. Please mark your calendars for this special presentation, there will even be a nosh!

In July, the congregation received an informational packet from the office. Included in the packet was this year’s $18.00 dues donation request for the Men’s Club. Your $18.00 contribution makes it possible for the Men’s Club to put on events and sponsor events like the dinner for the synagogue annual meeting. Thank you to those who sent in their donation.

The Men’s Club recognized as the religious, social and service auxiliary organization of our congregation fills a vital role in synagogue life. The health and vitality of every synagogue depends on an active Men’s Club and Sisterhood to attract new members. Synagogues without these active organizations tend to stagnate and lack energy.

Synagogue membership is not required to join the Men’s Club. For more information regarding the Men’s Club please contact the synagogue office, and I will personally contact you on the club’s behalf.

Strategic Planning CommitteeMelissa Cohen, Steering Committee Chair

The SUL AM for Strategic P l a n n i n g

Committee has been hard at work! We last met in early August to complete a Strength, weakness, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis exercise as outlined by United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ). From there, the committee identified a few program opportunities the shul could easily implement immediately to enhance activities – no final decisions or details have been implemented as of yet but look for some fun programming changes in the coming months.

Additionally, the committee would like to thank you for your cooperation in the USCJ Congregational Survey. The survey closed in mid-August, and we had a response rate greater than 35% from our members – far exceeding the USCJ’s average response rate from other congregations. This indicates you have interest in the work we are doing! We’ll be dialing into the data at our meetings and look forward to sharing it with you in the future.

In the meantime, we have also completed committee interviews where we went out into the shul and interviewed chairpersons from each committee. These findings have not yet been processed but these insights are in integral part of our research process.

Moving forward, in late October the Shaarie Torah Board and SULAM Committee will be joining forces to start creating a vision/mission statement – a workshop led by Jay Weiner, Transition Specialist with the USCJ. The second/final USCJ SULAM workshop is slated for mid-November where we'll be introduced to Stage II and the final steps of this project.

Following all of our data collection, as outlined above, and the November workshop, we’ll be looking for many volunteers to participate in task forces and focus groups. If you’re interested in participating, please call the office after the holidays to be directed appropriately.

Shana Tova from the SULAM for Strategic Planning Committee

USY/Kadima Youth GroupsSarah Rohr, Youth Group Advisor

Dear Youth, Teens and Family, great news, Shaarie Torah has aligned with United

Synagogue Youth (USY) which means we now have youth groups.

USY was founded in 1951. The mission statement of the organization is:

"United Synagogue Youth and Kadima [and Pre-Kadima], of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, inspires Jewish youth to explote, celebrate and practice ethical values, Jewish living, Zionism and community responsibility based on the ideology of the Conservative Movement."

The USY (High School), Kadima (Middle School) and Pre-Kadima (3rd-5th Grade) groups will engage in age appropriate activities, outings, conversations and connections, including: movie nights, havdallah with elders, ice skating, Sukkah decorating, films and discussions, huckleberry tubing, and much more. These groups are excellent ways to relieve stress and hangout with some really cool people, and they also provide excellent opportunities to explore your leadership skills.

USY is currently building a teen board. This is important as the groups are participant led, where the teens advise and select the content of the program, with the advisor overseeing that their choices abide by health and safety rules and standards, stimulate their intellects and expand their capacities to connect joyfully with one another. USY is an on-the-ground leadership training. In addition, this year we are collaborating with Neveh Shalom as a city-wide USY group. A unique component of Shaarie Torah's USY will be a special, self-selected group called the MitzvoTeam who will mentor Kadima and Pre-Kadima youth. You may see these USYers at the younger groups events lending a hand, leading an activity or dutifully playing with the next generation of leaders. For those interested in being on the Teen Board or being a part of the MitzvoTeam, please contact Sarah.

The Kadima youth will also have some input in shaping and guiding the trajectory of the fun and fascinating activities they will be engaging in. Kadimaniks are leaders in training who may be invited to help lead and attend to the Pre-Kadimaniks so that each generation of these segmented youth groups feel the inextricable web of connection that binds us all to one another.

Pre-Kadima most of our events will take place on or near the Shaarie Torah campus. Games, food and lighthearted fun will color our year together. The Pre-Kadimaniks, will get the benefit of USYer's presence and their valuable guidance which may, if we are lucky, bud into intergenerational friendships and kehilla building.

The beauty of Youth Groups is that at the heart of everything we do together, our main objective is to build kehilla (community) where Jewish kids of all ages can be seen, heard, welcomed, blessed, supported, inspired, celebrated, honored and loved for who they are and what they bring to us.

Great News: Shaarie Torah Now has Youth Groups!

Sarah Rohr is the Shaarie Torah advisor for USY, Kadima and Pre-Kadima. She is also the K-2 Religious School teacher. Sarah has much experience leading and teaching people of all ages, from preschool through elder hood, in education, yoga, exercise, meditation and more. In addition, she has coached soccer and basketball teams for youth and inter-generational teams for the Special Olympics. Sarah is a freelance writer and artist – her mediums are drawing, painting, sculpting, and writing poetry and songs. She is very excited to join the Shaarie Torah community and support the youth of our community.
