The first day after the flood our team gathered around to discuss the immediate needs and see how we could meet as many as possible. We heard several reports of families on the North Shore with no food, water, gas, or electricity. We were amazed to see that the entire island was coming together to support their ohana. Kauai’s First Responders were beginning to airlift people out and get them to safety, there were stranded visitors and locals with no road out and only ocean on the other side. Anyone and everyone that had a boat or jet ski had gassed up and started shuttling people out, and bringing supplies in. KGEFCU became an immediate drop of site for supplies and monetary gifts. KAUAI DEVASTATED BY MAJOR FLOODING

April was what felt like month three of consistent cloudy weather and non-stop rain, the day the flood came was just another rainy day. No one was prepared for the toll it would take on our island. KGE Federal Credit Union stepped in to support our community because that’s what credit unions do, we are not-for-profit, community focused people with a purpose to serve, we are Kaua’i. The first day after the flood our team gathered around to discuss the immediate needs and see how we could meet as many as possible. Kauai’s First Responders were beginning to airlift people out and get them to safety, there were stranded visitors and locals with no road out and only ocean on the other side. KGEFCU

COMMUNITY SUMMER 2018 The staff organized the incoming donations while others loaded their t rucks fu l l of suppl ies to be distributed to flood victims in affected areas of the island. We delivered more than 500 gallons of diesel, gasoline and non-ethanol boat gas so the shuttles going in and out of the Haena. We delivered hundreds of food items, cleaning supplies and fresh water. Our teams went out to damaged and destroyed homes to do anything that was needed of us manual labor, dump runs, cleaning, organizing or just hold a baby so a mom could think. Some people just needed a shoulder to cry on.

The prominent need for money was becoming more demanding. People had continually asked how we could assist. We quickly gathered our resources and set up an information intake center at Hale Halawai in Hanalei. We were able to successfully assist people who didn’t have the means to get to our Lihue branch open up a Flood Relief loan with little interest, and no payments for 5 months. Through this process we were overwhelmed with gratitude and so thankful we were in a position to help our community. Another way we were able to help was through the support of local business like Java Kai and Kauai Pasta we were able to provide the First Responders daily meals. “If it weren’t for you guys we wouldn’t be eating” quoted a Captain manning air rescues.

KGEFCU was also able to coordinate with Tom one of the co-owners at Guardian Storage in Lihue (pictured above) who donated 40 s t o r a g e c o n t a i n e r s t o displaced families and flood victims. We were able to offer this service to several of our members whom had no where else to store their belongings. We are so proud of our credit union, our community and our island!
