How the Academy came to be…
-The Xi Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has worked diligently to execute a program designed to deliver two of our National Programs, Project Alpha and Go to High School - Go to College. This program was named “Alpha Academy." Through this program the Brothers of Xi Alpha Lambda are able to interact and build relationships with minority male students through discussions on improving communication skills, time Management, goal setting, study skills, financial planning, etc.
-In partnership with Potomac Middle School, this bi-monthly interaction creates a platform for a consistent presence for these youth, allowing the Brothers of Xi Alpha Lambda to serve as role models to the future male leaders of tomorrow.
What is mentoring?-Mentoring is a partnership between an experienced person and a less experienced person in which information and knowledge is shared. This relationship is designed to assist the “mentees” in obtaining skills and confidence to be responsible for their own futures.
Does mentoring a child really make adifference? How?-“The number one indicator of success for a childis a good relationship with a caring adult.”
–Fortune magazine
-“People who grew up in difficult circumstancesand yet are successful have one thing in common:at a critical juncture in their early adolescence, they had a positive relationship with a caringadult.”
–Former President Bill Clinton
A study of Big Brothers/Big Sisters one-to
one mentoring found that Little Brothers
and Sisters who met with their mentors for
about a year were:
-46% less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs
-27% less likely than their peers to start underage consumption of alcohol
-52% less likely than their peers to skip a day of school
-37% less likely than their peers to skip a class
A Call To Action
-An unacceptably high percentage oftoday’s men and women spend little
timeor don’t interact with children at all.
-No society survives long when youngpeople must learn the basic principles
ofthat society without the instruction, influence, and guidance of mature
menand women.
-Harold D. Davis
