F A I T H N O T E S JUNE 2015 NEWSLETTER OF FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH Celebrating Music We begin June with a celebration of our many musicians at Faith. Our church is so blessed with musical talent and willing spirits. On Sunday, June 7, we will publicly acknowledge the many ways in which our dedicated musicians contribute to our worship experience. Music has always held a place of great importance in the Lutheran tradition. It establishes a way for people to unite in expressing their spirituality. It teaches us about God's Word through the texts of songs. And music is one of the most powerful expressers of human emotion. As Hans Christian Andersen said, "Where words fail, music speaks". Martin Luther certainly understood the importance and power of musical expression. Here is some of what he had to say about music... "Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world." "The gift of language combined with the gift of song was given to man that he should proclaim the Word of God through music." "As long as we live there is never enough singing." "Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us." We are very grateful to the many people who contribute to Faith's music program. Their dedication and hard work is truly a ministry among us. Whether young, old, or middle-aged, all those who serve by participating in choirs, Praise Teams, playing instruments, playing handbells and chimes, singing, etc. including our sound technicians and all who help behind the scenes; all have contributed something special to our worship at Faith. May God richly bless you through the efforts of our many musicians here at Faith. LYLE'S LINES

Have you ever been disappointed and saddened by something that happened to you or those close to you?

If you're over the age of three days old I'd guess (with probably 99% accuracy) you have been disappointed at some time in your life. I know I was disappointed recently at the outcome of the two pastoral visits here at Faith, and I know many of you were disappointed as well because of what you've told me. Months of work, hours and hours of phone calls, reading resumes, numerous meetings and discussions, and what do we have to show for it? Nothing! At least, that's what Satan wants me [us?] to think. When something doesn't go our way and when bad things happen to us, we can think God has abandoned us. We can believe we're alone. We can think "life isn't fair" and "I deserve better than this". If you've ever felt this way don't feel bad--you're not alone in those feelings and thoughts. But let's look past those thoughts and feelings and see what God has to say to us, especially at those times. First of all, know you are never alone. Jesus said to His disciples and TO US, "I am with you always" (my emphasis) and "I will never leave you nor forsake you". In my darkest hours how comforting it has been to me to know Jesus is still there with me!

But we might also need to know God wil l overcome all things. I wish I could tell you everything will work out in this life (on earth) the way you desire, but we all know that's not always going to be the case. Loved ones will die. We will have serious illnesses. We'll lose friends, and jobs, and possessions, and, well, you get the idea. Jesus said, "In this world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." That's the good news we can always hang onto. No matter what we face, we will (eventually) come out on top. And sometimes, that's all we might have to hang onto. But there's also the good news that comes NOW: God is our refuge. God loves you. He wants the best for you. He has given His all for you! He tells you, "Call upon me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you. And you will glorify Me." God sometimes allows bad things into our lives so that we are reminded to call upon Him and place our trust in Him. Even now, with no pastor coming and no pastor being called soon, let's put our faith and trust in God! He is our refuge! He will be with us! And He will help us overcome this, and all adversities!

Sunday Morning Adult Bible Class

Led by Lyle Heggemeier, this class begins May 31 and meets in the Auditorium each Sunday

morning from 9:45-10:40.

Bring your Bible and enjoy some

great discussion!

Paul the Apostle: What Culture

Doesn't Want You to Hear

Americans live in a culture that places high

emphasis on entertainment, achievement,

and self. It's increasingly difficult for

Scriptural truth to cut through the noise and

sink into our hearts. But when we stop and

study Scripture, the culture we live in faces

the same problems as the Early Church.

This Bible study, utilizing video footage from

Rome, uses the life of Paul to highlight how

followers of Christ can stand up to our

culture's norms and stand firm in Christ.

FROM THE

Directors of Children's and Family Ministry Carrie and Steve Ford

As we move into June, we would like to thank all our wonderful teachers and shepherds who devote time every week to preparing lessons and every Sunday morning to teaching our children about God's Word. We appreciate all the time and energy they put into making Sunday School a meaningful and fun experience for our children. During the last rotation of the school year, students will be reviewing the main topics they learned about this year in both the Old and New Testaments. Please join us as we gather to remember and look more in-depth at what the Bible is teaching us. This year, there will be no Sunday School during the Education Hour in the summer. Instead, beginning June 21, there will be lessons for students ages 4 and up using the Hands On worship curriculum at Kids Time during the late service. There will not be Kids Time during the 8:30 service from June 21 through the end of the summer. Thank you to everyone who brought a friend to "Bring Your Friends to Sunday School" day. It was great to see new faces in both Sunday School and in worship. We would encourage your family to make every Sunday a "Bring Your Friends" Sunday.

Do you have any suggestions for Children's and Family Ministry events or programming? Are you willing to help out with or organize Children's and Family Ministry events or programs? Contact us with your suggestions or notify us of your willingness to serve!

Christmas in July (or June) By Don and Suzi Grosz Merry Christmas! Blessed Christmas! The Operation Christmas Child 2014 shoebox ministry was a great success with 161 boxes sent, a six-fold increase since we began this ministry at Faith four years ago. Many of you packed, for the first time, your own boxes of hygiene, school, toy items and more importantly, the Word about Jesus, for disadvantaged children worldwide. We thought you might like to have more time to shop now, and take advantage of summer sales and special promotions such as back-to-school sales which begin as early as July. We can give out boxes now along with a detailed list of items that should and could be included in each box. Please let us hear from you if you have any questions. Thank you. Don & Suzi Grosz Cell: 506-5205 Email: [email protected]

Prayer Shawl Ministry The Prayer Shawl Ministry enjoyed a good meeting on May 4. Sue Hutchings opened with devotion and prayer, and presented the treasurer's report. The following items were discussed:

• Thanks to Jane Smurthwaite for the two beautiful shawls she made for us and to Liane Bartsch for the yarn she gave us.

• Jackie Johnson came on behalf of Rochester General Hospital to ask if we would consider knitting lap throws for their cancer patients while they are having their chemo treatments.

• Prayer shawls will be displayed in church on June 14, so there will be opportunity that morning to choose a shawl to give to anyone you know whou would enjoy the comfort of one. If you would like one sooner, ask any member of the Prayer Shawl ministry and she would be happy to help you select one.

• Lots of knitting, crocheting, and chatting was done. • The shawls were blessed, and Sue Hutchings closed the meeting with prayer.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry next meeting is Monday, June 1, 7pm in Room 204. If you would like to help by knitting or crocheting shawls for us but can't come to our meetings, you may do so at home. There are patterns in manila envelopes attached to the bulletin board across from the church office. Place your completed shawl in a bag with Prayer Shawl and your name noted on it and leave it in the church office. Thanks for your help and interest!

Dorcas Circle The Dorcas Circle had a productive meeting in May. Doris Florance brought in three walker bags and eight pillow cases she made. Plans for our June luncheon were discussed. Karen Wright came with a cushion to re-cover for FCCNS. Fourth of July favors were made. Bears were cut out. Material was sorted and put into kits for "Dress a Girl" dresses. Walker bags and bears were sewn. Pillows and bears were stuffed. Eight pillows, 10 bears, and eight walker bags were completed. One cushion was covered. Lois Jacob will deliver the favors to Woodside Manor and took the bears home to put eyes on them. The walker bags will be given to Laurie Ebbecke to deliver to St. John's. Bears will be given to Norma Kreiss to put eyes on. Sally Schooley will deliver our quilt to Camp Pioneer. Doris Florance will deliver the pillows to Woodside Manor. The Circle will end its season with a luncheon on Thursday, June 11, at church in the Community Room at 11:30 a.m.. We will begin again in September.

Fall Women's Book Group Selection The Women's Book Group is reading the suspenseful, New York Times best-selling novel The Girl on the Train, by Paula Hawkins. This fast-paced thriller is about the disappearance of a London woman named Megan, and one of the three narrators, Rachel, finds herself in the middle of the investigation. "The novel is perfectly paced from its arresting beginning to its twist ending; it's not an easy book to put down" (Michael Schaub, npr.org). Join us in October for a lively discussion. For more information, contact Rae Usinger (381-1391) or Barb Riethmeier (381-0779).
