We Have Everything in CP! Cicero once said, “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you

need.” Did you know that the Cliffside Park Public Library has a children’s gar-

den? We do! And, it is bursting with a late summer harvest. The garden came to

be this past spring, thanks in part to donations from Cliffside Park’s Onorato

Landscaping and Busanic Fence Co. Vegetables and herbs have been used in our

kids’ cooking classes, in recipes at our farmer’s market booth demos and other

items will be donated to the local food pantry. The initial planting took several

hours and local children participated. Many live in apartments where they are

unfamiliar with backyard gardens, so it was a real treat. It has been maintained

by the library staff and more programs will be coming where the children can get

involved. Next time you are on the north side of our building, check it out!

DIRECTOR’S CORNER

This has been an extremely enjoyable summer. Conditions were ideal for tending to our library’s gar-den (see cover story). We had our summer Sunday concerts in Memorial Park. On Fridays the library’s booth popped up at the Farmer’s Market. I had the opportunity to meet people and tell them all about what the library has to offer. In early August the li-brary partnered with the Cliffside Park Council, Po-lice/Fire/EMS and Recreation Departments to put on a spectacular National Night Out Against Crime. Al-though I again opted against entering the 2nd Annu-al Hot Dog Eating Contest, I did sing some Disney fa-vorites with Belle & Ariel! Finally, who doesn’t love ice cream & cupcakes? I was able to enjoy heaping scoops of ice cream and super hero themed cup-cakes at our annual Summer Reading Club’s closing ceremony — this year it was a food truck fest for our VIP readers! I think back and wonder, “How can the fall top my summer?” The birth of my first child, a future librari-an of course, can come close. And, at the library my staff will hold down the fort with new book clubs, Lego design for kids, adult coloring club and more. It may not end with the cupcake truck rolling up, but the entire fall line-up plus a new baby is icing on the cake! See you at the library…

Best,

Stephanie M. Bellucci, Library Director

From the library’s archives…

This undated photo probably comes from the time

period of the late 1930s which is consistent with the

dates our library was housed in the basement of

School #3 and directed by Miss Clarice Blake (pictured center).

Back To School and Fall Children’s Books

Lots of students visit our Children’s Department in the summer to obtain

copies of books on their summer reading lists. We even have a big celebra-

tion for our VIP readers who complete at least ten books during June, July &

August. Don’t let summer be your only time for pleasure reading. Our Chil-

dren’s Librarian, Mr. C., has been stocking his shelves with age appropriate

books about going back to school and the fall season and holidays. A new

book in the collection tells the tale of someone going back to school...

Did you know dogs can go back to school too? In a brand

new book, I am Going to School by Dee Smith the main

character, a dog, is ready for his amazing first day! He, like most chil-

dren, is ready to have fun, make new friends and learn lots of new things. The book has a

rhyming style and colorful illustrations. It is a great introduction to the school season so stop

by the library to check this and other books out and read them before your first day!
