Enormous development in biopellet produc-tion is now taking place. There are three paral-lell trends. 1. In the established markets some

big actors are growing and will be dominating.2) In the new markets the plants are getting bigger3) An impressive amount of small plants for localmarket are established everywhere.

The conclusion is that the production businessis very dynamic.

On the other hand the market is also develo-ping. The producers are waiting for the big market forlarge scale energy generation. So far big buyeres onlyexists in a few countries but the utilities are preparing. It does not need to be so many to clean out the pro-duction - depending of course of the price payed.

This unique map are our own product. The sources are quite different. In Germany and

Sweden for example we have talked with most of theproducers. For Italy a brand new report from AIEL isthe source.

We do not guarantee that the information isabsolutely correct or updated, but we think, this isthe best market overwiev ever done. For somecountries quite small units are also presented - forother not. This will be changed in the next update.

We appriciate all comments.Lennart Ljungblom

The constructionwork for a newpellet plant is

being performed at theS6 in Leoben-Göss, inAustria. This will be themost modern and big-gest pellet productionplant of Obersteier-mark.

The plant is needed tosupply the boomingmarket of pellet fuel.

Constructor is Holz-industrie Leitinger, acompany that has been

producing biopellets sin-ce 1996.

From the beginning ofMarch 2005 the sawdust that comes fromMayr Meinhof Holz willbe used in pellets pro-duction.

50 per cent in-crease

The production of woodpellets is among the corecompetence of Leitinger, and the company pro-duces about 55 000

tonnes annually in thetwo existing plants inWernersdorf and Pred-ing (both in the region ofWeststeiermark).

At the moment costsfor heating with pelletsare 40% lower thanheating with oil in Aus-tria.

The two managing di-rectors Wolfgang Leit-inger and Heinz Gachunderline the importan-ce of the regional utiliza-tion of raw material and

they are counting oncompany-overlappingsynergies. In the futurethey will produce withinan industrial network.

CapacityThe pellet productionplant as well as the dry-ing plant will be cons-tructed and run by Leit-inger.

Each of the two CPM-presses will have a presscapacity of 8 t/h. Loa-ding capacity will be at

80 t/h, which cor-responds to a filling capacity of 3 tank vehicles.

Pellets for central hea-ting are available loose, and will be delivered ina bulk truck or for sto-ves in a practical stable15-kg sack.

Denmark takescare of thewood remain-

In the world’s biggestpelleting plant in Kögenear Köpenhamn, Den-mark, pellets are madesimultaneous from woodby products and straw.

OperationThe operator of this lar-ge-scale installation isthe Danish energy groupEnergi E2.

Buhler(Swiss) has de-veloped two different li-nes on the basis of thecustomer’s specifications.

ting of drying, grindingand 6 pelleting linesSprout-Matador PM30pellet mills.

The plant produces

120.000 tonnes pelletsper year. The raw mate-rial is sawdust. The pel-let mill PM30 ensureshigh output and efficientmonitoring of the pelletquality.

Process controlEfficient process controlgives large flexibility andoptimum energy utiliza-tion. The energy con-sumption for operationof the pellet mill and the

steam requirements areequivalent to 2.5-3% ofthe energy content ofwood.

Moisture contentTo achieve efficient pelle-ting the moisture contentof the raw material mustbe reduced to approx.10%. If the moisturecontent is higher thanthis, the material under-goes a drying process.

Proper drying and

grinding of the raw ma-terial is of great impor-tance to the quality ofthe finished pellets. Theincreased surface andopen fibres of the gro-und promotes absorp-tion of steam in the cas-cade mixer. Steam andincreased temperature inthe cascade mixer soft-ens the lignin of thewood, which allows pel-leting without additionof binders.

A versatile fuelThe Haukineva plant islocated near Seinäjoki inwestern Finland. Pelletsproduced at the plantare mainly used in po-wer and heating plantsaround Finland and Eu-rope. According to Tom-mi Ruha, Director ofVapo’s Refined FuelsBusiness Unit, there willbe plenty of demand forpeat pellets in the future.

– Consumption of pel-lets is increasing incountries like Sweden,Denmark, Finland, theBenelux countries, UK,Germany and Austria. In many countries pel-lets are used to replacecoal.

Peat pellets - like

wood pellets - have alow moisture content, making them similar tocoal in their calorificproperties and combus-tion characteristics.Coal can therefore bereplaced with peat orwood pellets without amajor loss of power.Peat pellets are particu-

larly in demand in Swe-den, where peat is classi-fied as a renewable bio-fuel in the production ofelectricity.

In addition to coal-fi-red power stations, the-re is also potential forusing peat pellets in di-strict heating plants andspace heating boilers.

In addition to the Hau-kineva plant, Vapo isalso investing in a newpellet plant in Haapave-si. Construction beganat the end of October2004. www.bioenergyinternational.comMarket

When a treehas been cutfor the pur-

pose of providing woodproducts or paper, onlyhalf of the biomass endsup as the desired pro-duct.

The other half is avai-lable as co-products forenergy purposes. Andlater, as the wood hasserved its purpose asbuilding materials or thefibers have been recycledas paper a few times, most of the energy maystill be recovered.

Utilisation of by-pro-ducts has provided newincome to the forestrysector. Today, the bioen-ergy market is vital tothe economic competiti-veness of the forest indu-stry in general and saw-mills in particular.

Previous to the expan-sion, environmentalconcerns were voiced re-garding several risks ofbioenergy: Local air pol-lution, issues on in-creased local transportsof fuel, forestry practicesthreatening biodiversityand, in addition, newrisks to labour weresome of the more impor-tant.

The early environme-ntal concerns have beenresolved. Local air pol-lution has been mana-ged by using raw biofu-els preferably in efficienthigh-power boilers. While refined wood pel-lets are increasingly usedfor the more difficult

small-scale applications.Transport in relation tolarge district heatingplants in cities is oftenmade using railroad orship.

The increased use ofbioenergy has been ac-hieved during a periodwhen forestry has beco-me more respectful toecological values andmechanisation has redu-ced labour risks.

Now, attention is onmulti-functional energyforestry, such as whensalix plantations areused to develop gamehavens or treating sewa-ge water or sewage slud-ge. More than otherparts of forestry andagriculture the bioener-gy sector is developingsystems for recycling ofnutrients.

Significant increasein bioenergy

In Sweden, the bioener-gy sector has respondedreadily. As shown in fi-gure 1, bioenergy supp-ly has increased from 40TWh in 1970 to 105TWh in 2003.

If disregarding the useof oil for transport, bio-energy even overtook oiland became the largestsource of energy for sta-tionary uses in Sweden.

Increased industrialuse

Most of the biomassused for energy purposesin 1970 was residues inthe pulp industry.

Black liquor, bark andother residues were bur-ned substituting oil toprovide heat to the indu-stry itself, while avoi-ding the problem ofwaste production.

In the 1980s residuesin the sawmills andwood industry were in-creasingly utilised forenergy purposes and inthe 1990s foresters star-ted to collect branchesand tops while logging.

EU legislation has alsoincreased the supply ofbiomass waste thatshould be combustedwith energy utilisationrather than sent to land-fills.

There was also an ear-ly market among farm-ers using wood fromtheir own forests, andsawmills using their ownresidues.

District heatingexpanded

Despite being weak, atax incentive created toencourage bioenergy usemade district heatingplants turn to bioenergyopening a market for theexcess residues thatcould not be utilised inthe forest industries. Di-strict heating-networkswere built in Sweden, mainly by municipal en-

ergy companies, fromthe late 1960s.

Low electricity prices, due to over capacity af-ter nuclear expansion, resulted in only minorinterest in electricityproduction from bio-mass.

The priority was tomaximise total energyefficiency. As a resulttechnologies like smoke-stack condensation weredeveloped making itpossible to utilise theenergy otherwise lost asmoisture in the fuel wasreleased as water vapourthrough the chimneys.

From 1990 the car-bon tax on fossil fuelswas sufficient to encou-rage substitution of coalin existing district hea-ting plants and, someti-mes, even substitution ofoil with wood powderor oils from biomass.

Small scale expan-sion during recent

years.Small-scale wood pelletuse has acceleratedduring recent years.

While only a fewhundred existed pelletstoves substituting orsupplementing directelectric heating existedin the mid 1990s, morethan 3500 were installed

in 2003. A similar in-crease has occurred forinstallations of pelletburners substituting oil-burners in conventionalcentral heating systems.

The resulting increasein pellet use for small-scale applications isshown in figure 2. Inaddition larger quanti-ties are used in districtheating plants.

New developmentsAn ethanol market hasbeen developed initiallybased on ethanol from aforest industry. Oneplant producing ethanolfrom grain has addedsignificant capacity, whi-le most of the ethanolused as automotive fuelis imported.

Ethanol as a fuel hasbeen favoured with ex-emptions from the gene-ral fuel tax.

Large import is justi-fied as sugarcane basedethanol is produced atlow economic cost inBrazil and show goodenvironmental life-cycleperformance despitelong distance transport.

The number of etha-nol vehicles has in-creased dramaticallyduring the last two years

Increased use and envi-ronmental concernsIn Sweden bioenergy has grown into the second

largest source of energy., reducing emissions

of carbon dioxide and improving energy securi-

ty of supply. The use in 2003 was 378 PJ (105

TWh), or 42 GJ/capita. Dr. Tomas Kåberger,

chairman of the Swedish Bioenergy Associa-

tion explaines how this was achived.

Local environmentaland health effects

Incomplete combustionof fuels leads to emis-sions of hydrocarbonsand particles associatedwith health risks andenvironmental regula-tion. The continued useof old types of wood

burning practices maystill be a considerableproblem in villages andtowns.

With modern large-scale combustion theemissions are understrict control with negli-gible external effects.

There are still thous-ands of old-type wood-burning systems in ope-ration. However, as themodern equipment isnot only environmental-ly superior but alsomore convenient anduses fuel more efficient-ly, modernisation is ta-king place. Heat accu-

mulating tanks and mo-dern pellet equipment, are reducing local pollu-tion. The relation bet-ween the best and worstis in the order of a factor1 000 in emissions of hy-drocarbons. However, there is new evidencethat the risks of old-typeequipment may be lowprovided good birchwood is used. The che-mical composition ofsmoke particles is suchthat the health effectsmay be expected to beless severe than effects ofparticles from othersources.

Sustainabilityissues

There are some sustaina-bility issues related tobioenergy systems thatdeserve attention.

A fundamental condi-tion is that the forestryor agriculture deliveringthe biomass should besustainable under mate-rial flow- as well as bio-diversity criteria.

ConclusionIn Sweden bioenergy usehas increased rapidlyand it is a major sourceof energy. The develop-ment has occurred in

symbiosis with forest in-dustry. Bioenergy sys-tems may be utilised toreach other objectivesthan increasing renewa-ble energy supply. Mo-dern technologies havereduced local air-pollu-tion while long-termsustainability can be ac-hieved provided forestryand agricultural practi-ces by well management.

fuel. One of 400 in-

owned by the com-

pany DLG in Has-

selager, Denmark.

A new boiler wasinstalled in2001. The fuel

used is a mixture of seedand grain as well asfeedstuff residue, dust, chaff, whole grain and

pressed grain. The boiler is a Dans-

toker Multimiser No.19, which is a 5-passhot-water boiler with a2 MW output.

The problematic fuelmeant that the boilerneeded to be cleanedmanually for every 14days of operation becau-se of heavy deposits inthe tube passes.

The decision was con-sequently made to retro-fit with a soot-blowingsystem.

After the installation528 operating hours peryear was gained. Also202 working hours wassaved.

Overall savings is cal-culated to 251 600

DKK. Further to this isthe improved efficiencyof the boiler. The annu-al efficiency increasedby approx. 8 per cent.

The investment costfor the system was170.000 DKK to installthe system. The payback time on the invest-ment is approximatelysix months.
