HANDICAMP 2018
In place of this week’s normal morning meeting, a
group of members and their partners attended this
year’s Handicamp at Point Walter Recreation Centre
for the annual Ron Sloan Rotary Dinner, which this
year was themed as a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.
Handicamp is a weeklong live-in camp for 18-35 year olds
with a disability, who are teamed with a “buddy” for a week
of fun and adventure. The camp activities include visits to
Perth Zoo and Adventure World and while on site, campers
challenge themselves with abseiling and archery and water
sports in the river below. Of course their nights are filled with
games and entertainment too, like karaoke, a firm favourite
with participants.
Now in its 36th year in Perth, Handicamp was started by Past District
Governor Ron Sloan who had heard of a similar program in Norway and
since then it has inspired our members, like myself, Roma and former
member and PDG Jody Sparks for example, to participate in the
organisation of this great program and the Rotary Club of Ascot has
sponsored many participants over the years. Jody coordinated this
year’s camp but had to hand over to PDG Linda McLerie at the last
moment to participate at Rotary’s International Assembly in San Diego, USA.
In her speech, Linda said the Handicamp experience taught not only acceptance but selflessness and
thoughtfulness for others and she challenged us to put ourselves in the shoes of a blind, young, shy, country
kid about to put all their faith in someone they had only just met and step off a precipice and abseil from a
great height. District Governor Bruce Lynch added that ultimately humans are happier when giving rather than
taking and Handicamp is another example of Rotary making a difference in our community.
This year we shared our dinner table with Jade (sponsored by the RC of Como) and Kristy, her buddy,
(sponsored by RC of Esperance) who both, by coincidence, work for Active Industries. Jade was still quite
excited by the afternoon’s activity of archery as she had managed a bull’s eye and they were still laughing
about the first adventure of the camp, a trip to Perth Zoo on what became the wettest January day for 18
years. However, with better weather forecast, Jade was looking forward to some water sports, a trip to
Adventure World and challenging her fear of heights on the onsite abseiling course.
Our best wishes to all of this year’s participants and thanks to our
members and their partners who donned their hats and went
along to support them.

January is VOCATIONAL SERVICE MONTH
Integrity and ethics
Promoting integrity through ethical behaviour is an essential part of what it means to be a Rotarian. Two standards developed by Rotarians — The Four-Way Test and the Rotary Code of Conduct — provide a road map for ethical behaviour in the workplace and other areas of life.
The Four-Way Test
The Four-Way Test was conceived in 1932 by businessman Herbert J. Taylor, a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago who served as Rotary International president in 1954-55. Having taken on the task of saving a company from bankruptcy, Taylor developed the test as an ethical guide to follow in all business matters. The company’s survival was credited to this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary International in 1934, The Four-Way Test remains an essential standard against which Rotarians measure ethical behaviour. It has been translated into dozens of languages and promoted by Rotarians worldwide.
The Four-Way Test Of the things we think, say or do:
1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Wear your ROTARY SHIRT DAY Friday 23 February 2018
The inaugural Wear a Rotary Shirt Day will be
held on 23 February 2018. The purpose of the
day is a no cost marketing activity to create
more awareness of Rotary. Each Rotarian is
asked to wear a Rotary shirt all day to create
conversation and get people to ask
“What is Rotary?”
This is an initiative
from our District
that is now Australia
wide and possibly
world-wide in the future.
