Prime Lambs – 1182 Forward The largest entry so far this year sold on a consistent trade for all on offer. There were fewer smart butcher types forward this week which is reflected in the averages. Michael Dickens sold his handy weight Beltex X to 197p/kg. Oliver Bowden followed at 190p/kg. Mike had further pens at 187p/kg and 186p/kg. Colin Stoakes sold at 186p/kg with R J Taylor & Son and J Hanson & Son at 180p/kg. M/s J Hanson & Son topped the day at £90.00 for Texel X M/s J H Hope & Son sold at £87.00 along with J F Brown and G D Bowden & Son. M/s R J Taylor & Son sold at £87.00 and £85.00 while J Hope Sheep Services saw £84.50 for their pen. Ewes – 46 Forward The cull ewe trade is a little steady. Medium Continental & Suffolk ewes sold to £65.00.

Friday 29th January 2016 Steers to £1240.00 Heifers to £990.00 Cows to £958.00 Stock Bulls to £2020.00 Store Cattle – 186 Forward

Another strong trade for all on offer today topping at £2020.00 for a Limousin stock bull from Mrs P A Payne, Billingshurst. Feeding cows sold to £958.00 for a Limousin X from the same farm. Slip heifers sold to £862.00. Paul Lory sold his run of older cows to £813.00. There were plenty of Aberdeen Angus X steers today, topped by M/s A G & J Williams with their 24 month steer at £1240.00, others from the same farm sold at £1170.00, £1165.00 and £1100.00. Colin Smith sold his run to £1170.00, £1122.00 and £1120.00. Limousin X homebred steers outwintered on turnips from Richard Houghton, Mousefield Family Farm sold at £1090.00 and £1045.00 at 20 months. Raggy Charolais X steers from Joe Pickford topped at £1012.00. Young cattle are still well in demand with Simmental X from Church Farms at £800.00 at 7 months. Mainly dairy cross heifers forward. Mousefield Family Farm sold British Blue X to £990.00, Limousin X £970.00 and Simmental X £945.00. Suckled calves sold to £658.00 for a pen full of Aberdeen Angus from Barton Farms. Store Lambs A decent entry of store lambs sold to a full ring side of buyers. Framed Charolais from Messer J C Kirbyshire sold for £73.00 for a full pen. Mr M A Britten sold medium keep Charolais for £71.00 and £69.50 respectively. Tight skinned Texel’s from the Barlow family sold for £70.00 for two big pen fulls. Mr J W Pickford again sold quality Suffolks, framed just needing finishing for £72.00 & £69.00 for pens over twenty. Ewes Ewe buyers were out in force today for the goods on offer. F C von Oppenheim saw £74.50 for Charolais and £67.50 twice for Texel’s. Old Texel Rams from the same farm sold to £96.50 with Charolais at £79.00. This trade would be much improved on the week being as dear as most centres.

*Clean livestock policies: It is the time of year where cattle have been housed for a fair while and some are becoming dirty. Please be aware dirty cattle should be clipped. On a few instances this week abattoirs have mentioned dirty cattle* Clean Cattle (231) Trade stands on and in the main remained at 332p/kg with one firm quoting 338p/kg for beef bred animals. It appears trade has levelled out. Weight and quality continue to pay. The pound: euro exchange altering has helped the cow trade by allowing exports to resume. Steers Some good steers placed this week with Charolais to £1507 for heavyweight U=4- with others to £1468. A consignment of British Blue and Limousins from Gloucestershire to £1499 (U+3=) and £1472 (U+3=). Dairy Blue crosses to £1393 (R+4-) and Limousins to £1372 (R=3+). Simmentals to £1396 (-U3+). Beef bred Limousins to £1350 for –U4L. Only a handful of native sired steers this week with Herefords to £1398 (R4L). Aberdeen Angus to £1370 (R4H) and £1362 (O+4L). R3 Sussex to £1173 and 16 month Stabilisers to £1185. Some tremendous heavyweight Dairy crosses to £1424 (O+4L) and £1318. Norwegian Reds to £1306 (-O4L). R3 Fleckvieh’s to £1338. Heifers Heifers top at £1449 for a tremendous U+3 Limousin. Others to £1348 (-U3) British Blue X Friesians to £1343 (-U4L), £1131 and £1287 (R3). Charolais to £1319 (R3) and £1275 (R4L). Aberdeen Angus to £1343 (O+4L), £1332 (R4L) and £1320 (R4H). Fleckvieh to £1108 (O+4L). Young Bulls Young Bulls to £1450 & £1339 for heavyweight E2/3. Beef Shorthorns to £1209 (O+4L) and £1142 (O+3) U+ Charolais to £1284.

OTM Clean, Cull Cows, Mature Bulls (99) Fed beef cows top at £1203 for –U4L Limousins, others to £1200. Simmentals to £1154 (R4L) and British Blues to £111 (R4L). South Devons to £1098 (R4L). Aberdeen Angus to £1012 (R4H), Shorthorns to £1023 (R3). Several fed Continental sucklers £900-£1000/head. Black and whites top at £922 for O+4L and P+4L to £669. OTM clean topped by a tremendous U=3 British Blue heifer at £1392 and £1375. Aberdeen Angus to £1335 (-U3). Aberdeen Angus steers to £1275.
