The others were his partner DeWlt-t. DeWltt’s superstitious wife Fern—with whom Longstreet had had an affair—Jeanne. Ques.. ■ member of the party seem s untriendJy toward the dead man. Bruno and Thumm, investigators, think DeWit* guilty—Longstreet had a sinister hold on him. Drury Lane, retired Shakespearean actor, says he knows who the murderer is, but will identify him only as Mr. X. One night the investigators and Lane go to the Weehawken Ferry- house in answer to an anonymous note. A man is murdered on an incoming boat. He is identified as Charles Wood, conductor of the murder car—writer of the anonymous letter. DeWitt denies talking to Wood, but in Wood’s pocket is a cigar bearing DeWitt’s private rynvrk. Guiness, motorman of the mui^ tdsfr car, identifies Wood by an ugly sear on the leg. DeWitt offers no explanation. Lane’s attendant Quacey disguises the actor with makeup. They start out together. Inspector Thumm appears at Wood’s boarding house and finds his bank book. Thumm tells the officer stationed at the boarding house to phone him next day at 2:30. Then he goes to a waiting automobile and rubs off some makeup. It is Lane. He also interviews DeWitt’s butler.

“■What reaction had this on Mr. DeW itt?”

Jorgens seem ed d isturbed. “Why, Mr. DeW itt took his com ing and going quite for granted , s ir .”

“■Very good, Jorgens. Now will you get Mr. DeW itt on the phone, teU him you a re calling for me, and th a t I request m ost urgently a luncheon appointm ent today .”

The appointm ent was m ade. They would m eet a t the E xchange Club. Lane instructed Q uacey to call ev- sry South A m erican consul in New iTork and try to locate one who might have h ad contact w ith Ma- juinchao.

“ T hat’s decent of you,’‘ said DeWitt d rearily . realize the dangerous position I ’m in. I am being constantly w atched. You yourself have been questioning m y serv ants . . . ”

“ Would you mind, then, if I asked you a question or two? My concern with this investigation is only with the end in view of getting a t the Truth. There are som e things I m ust know if I am to m ake fu rther p rogress.”

DeW itt looked up swiftly. “F u rther progress? H ave you reached any conclusions, Mr. L ane?”

“ Two fundam ental ones—I know who killed L ongstreet and Wood, if you would te rm th a t p rogress.”

DeW itt paled as if Lane had struck him . “But, if you know a ren ’t you going to do som ething about it? ”

“ I am . U nfortunately, we are dealing with literal-m inded Justice ; she dem ands tangible instrum ents of conviction. Will you help m e?”

DeW itt’s eyes fran tica lly sought to discover p recisely w hat this unusual p rosecutor knew. “ I ’ll tell you w hat I can, Mr. Lane. But— how shall I say it?—m y hands a r e - well, tied . . . T here’s one thing you sim ply m ustn ’t ask m e—the identity of the person w ith whom I had an appointm ent W ednesday night.”

L ane shook his head good-humor- edly. “You m ake it doubly difficult, by m ain tain ing silence on one of the m ost in teresting points in the case. However, we will w aive th a t —for the presen t. B oth you and L ongstreet m ade your fortunes in South A m erica. In w hat country was your m ine located?”

“U ruguay.”“Mr. M aquinchao is a U ruguay

L ane said sharp ly : “ The wrong a ttitude, Mr. DeW itt. Jorgens, a faithful servant, gave m e inform ation solely because he fe lt I asked in your in terest. You can do no b e tte r than em ulate h im —^unless you question m y purpose.”

D eW itt traced a p a tte rn on the cloth w ith a spoon. “ P u re ly a business visit, Mr. Lane. M aquinchao is the—the scout for ce rta in South A m erican public u tility locations— w anted our office to handle a bond issue.”

“Why did he s tay so long?”“ I don’t know, unless he visited

“ 1 g a th e r then , th a t y o u a n d In sp ec to r T h u m m b e lie v e D eW itt k illed L o n g stre e t also?*'

L ane w alked to the desk. “Will you please d irec t m e to Dr. M orris, your Club physician, then to the Club sec re ta ry .”

An hour or so la ter, D rury Lane entered D istric t A ttorney B runo’s office and foxmd Inspector Thum m hunched over a telephone, his face a study in incredulity . Thum m jerked a heavy eyebrow in g ree ting, his e a r hooked to the receiver.

“Now listen ,” said the Inspector, his face so red it seem ed about to bu rs t from im potent rage . “L et m e get this s tra ig h t . . . Shut up, will you? You say I told you to call m e a t half-past two th is afternoon and rem ind m e to give you som ething to do? You’re drunk! What? You helped m e pick up the rug? W hat rug, you jackass? . . . M aybe—” His eyes focused on Mr. D rury Lane, who w as w atching him with affectionate am usem ent, and his jaw sagged. A surly grin spread over his face and he grow led into the telephone: “Okay. I changed m y mind. Ju s t hang around the room .” He hung up and tu rned to Lane, plopping his elbows on the desk. Bruno looked from one to the other in bew ilderm ent. “Well, Mr. Lane, th a t’s one on m e, hey?”

“ Inspecto r,” L ane said gravely, “if I have ever en tertained doubts concerning your sense of Ine^ a re now etcrnaUy aispelled. "

“W hat is all this about?” dem anded Bruno.

“Y esterday I w ent to Weekhawk- en, interview ed M rs. M urphy, searched Wood’s room , found a bank-book under the carpet, a ss is ted, m ind you, by a m an who has known m e for six years, then I walked out,” Thum m replied. “ I t’s som ething of a m iracle , because a t the sam e tim e I w as in m y office jaw ing w ith you.”

Bruno stared a t Lane, broke into a laugh. “T hat’s a little unfair, Mr. Lane. And a little dangerous.”

“Not a t all. My fam ilia r is the w orld’s p rem ier m ake-up m an, Mr. Bruno. I m ust hum bly ask your pardon. Inspector, My reason was serious and perem ptory . P erhaps m y instruction to your operative w as a childish prank, bu t even th a t was d ictated by a desire to inform you, unconventionally to be sure, of the im personation .”

“N ext tim e you m ight le t m e take a look a t m yself,” grunted Thum m . “F rankly , I don’t li—Well, le t it go. L e t’s have th a t bankbook.”

“My v isit,” said L ane in a b risk tone, “ rea lly is induced by a desire fo r a copy of the com plete lis t of fe rry passengers,”

Bruno explored the top d raw er of his desk and handed L ane a thin sheaf of papers, rem ark ing : “The other day you said you’d like to be inform ed before we tak e definite action . . . ”

“The ax fa lls ,” m u rm ured Lane. “W hat p rec ise ly?”

“The a rre s t of DeW itt fo r the m u rd e r of Wood. T hum m and I a re agreed th a t we have a case. When the C om m issioner h ea rd m y story he told m e to shoot. I t won’t be h a rd to secure an ind ictm ent,”

L ane looked g rave. “ I gather, then, th a t you and Inspector T hum m believe DeW itt killed Longs tree t a lso?”

“N atu ra lly ,” said Thum m . “This Mr. X of yours, is behind the whole business. The two crim es w ere com m itted by the sam e hand, w ith m otives th a t fit like gloves.”

“A rem ark ab ly astu te ph rase ,” said Lane. “And w hen is th is step to be tak en ?”

“T here rea lly is no h u rry ,” re plied Brimo. “We’ll p robably a r re s t h im w ithin the nex t day—it som ething doesn’t happen to change our m inds.”

“ I t is too p rem atu re ,” said tiie ac tor. “You have a case, bu t how strong is it? ”

“L isten ,” snapped Thum m , “ this isn’t getting us anyw here. You’ve h ea rd ovu: side of the story. "What’s yours?”

“I find, gentlem en,” L ane said, tw isting about to face both m en, “ th a t you m ake the iden tical e rro r in your a ttitude tow ard crim e and punishm ent th a t m any producers m ake in connection w ith d ra m a and

You com m it the identical e rro r when you shape a crim e, redesign it to fit DeWitt, instead of m easuring DeW itt against the fixed specifications of the crim e. The problem should be attacked alw ays as an u n a lte ra ble bundle of fac ts; and if a hypothesis resu lts in conflicting loose ends, it is the hypothesis th a t is wrong. Do you follow m e, gentlem en?”

“My d ear Mr. L ane.” B runo’s whole m anner w as subtly a lte red . “ I t’s a b rillian t analogy and I don’t doubt it’s basically true. But, how often can we use the m ethod you suggest? We’re pressed for action. If a few things a re cloudy, i t ’s noi because w e’re w rong bu t because they’re unexplained, perhaps irrele* vaat, odds and ends.” ^

■‘A deoatable question . . . A s a m a tte r of fact, Mr. B runo,” ' repiled Lane abruptly , “I agre^^w ith you th a t the law should take its course. A rrest Mr. DeW itt by all m ean s .” He rose, sm iled, bowed, and quickly left the room.

T hat evening Quacey repo rted he had phoned m ost of the South A m erican consulates and learned nothing. M ost of the consuls w ere on vacation.

“ Q uacey,” said Lane, “Did you try the U ruguayan consul?”

“U ruguay?” squeaked the old m an. “Is th a t a country in South A m erica?” He m ade a face, and p a tte red out. Ten m inutes la te r he w as back, grinning. “A noble suggestion, Mr. D rury. The U ruguayan consul won’t be back un til S atm day , O ctober the tenth. H e’s gone back to U ruguay and no one in his consulate can—or is w illing to-— supply inform ation. PARTY PLANNED AT NAALEHUSeventeen members attended the meeting of the Naalehn

University Extension Club on Tuesday, November 25. The demonstration on waterless cookery of green leafy vegetables was given by Miss Sylvia Newel, home demonstration agent, assisted by the project leader, Mrs. T. Kamiyama. Vitamin A is found in great abundance in green and yellow vegetables, it was pointed out.

The agent also gave a talk on citizenship and the workings of our national government.

A party for members and their children will be held in the form of a luncheon on December 16. The Honuapo clubwill join them on that day.

*

Honuapo University Extension Club held its regular meeting on Tuesday morning at the club house. Waterless cooking of green leafy vegetables was demonstrated.,and a vegetable souffle was prepared. Cooking green leafy vegetables without water conserves the vitamins, the members were told.

Honuapo and Naalehu club are planning a joint Christmas party at noon on December 16. Children of the members will be special guests.JOHN M. ROSS 4-H CLUB

The John M. Ross 4-H club meeting was called to order on November 13 at the school cafeteria. The secretary called the roll. Mrs. Hara demonstrated cream of green leafy vegetable soup with the help of Miyoko Yamamoto and Setsue Yamashita. Every one tasted it and enjoyed it very much. We learned the song, “Ode to the Extension Hibiscus.” Then the song leader, Chieko Une, led us in singing other songs. We sang the pledge and the meeting adjourned.

For the first time in ten years, an undisputed boxing champion of the middleweight division was crowned

> when Tony Zale of Gary, Indiana, defeated Georgie Ab- : rams, who was tabbed before this fight as the uncrown

ed champion by virtue of his three non-titular victories over Billy Soose, New York version of the middileweight cif tion champion and both New York and the NBA agreed ki ig, Zale was, before this fight, the National Boxing Asso- to iHecognize the winner of this bout which was held last rFi- ‘d a / night at the Madison Square Garden as the undisputed middleweight champion of the world.

Thus, Tony Zale is the first universal king of the Middles since Mickey Walker hung ’em up way back in 1931.

Abrams, former stablemate of Ken Overlin, former middleweight title holder, was made a slight favorite before the fight. However, Zale proved his worth as the NBA champ as he came back strong after being floored for a 9 count in the first round to win a close and hard fought decision. This fight was one of the best slugfest ever witnessed in the Madison Square Garden for quite some time.

Tony Zale won the NBA crown back in Chicago in January of last year when he scored a 10-round decision over A1 Hostak of Seattle. In a return go during the summer of the same year, Zale stopped Hostak.

The Friday night’s match v/as formerly slated for September 12, but had to be postponed when Zale came up with a, serious case of athlete’s foot. Since Soose was fhen the New York middlev/eight champion, the September go was to be a non-titular affair. Soose since then, however, left the middleweight ranks to enter the light heavyweight division, causing the promoter to make this fray a titular affair.

Captain Bruce Smith of the Minnesota’s all-powerful Gophers has been named as the outstanding football player of the 1941 season by the Heisman Memorial Trophy committee.

Smith won by a wide margin over Angelo Bertelli of Notre Dame and Frankie Albert of Stanford. The Minnesota mainstay received 554 votes as compared to 345 for the Notre Dame star and 336 of the Indians’ spark plug.

Others receiving considerations were: Frank Sinkwich, Georgia, 249; Bill Dudley, Virginia, 237; Endicott Peabody, Harvard, 141; Edgar Jones, Pittsburgh 151; and Bob Westfall, Michigan, 147.

It might be interesting to note that Endioott Peabody of Harvard was the only lineman mentioned for the highest football award of the nation.

* * * * ,

Joho Shiroma, former local flyweight amateur fight- wi'll stake up against world champion flyweight Little Dado in the main event of the December 5 Star Bulletin's Salvation Army Christmas fund card.

These two fighters are not exactly strangers to each »ther inasmuch as they did quite a bit of sparring against each other in the Pacific Coast gyms before Little Dado arrived in Honolulu.

Shiroma who fought in the amateur ranks for a little over one season in Hilo and in Honolulu went to the mainland where he established a name for himself as a pro as he fought many top notchers.

While in Hilo Shiroma’s most outstanding victory was his win over Jose Mercado a couple of seasons ago. Mercado that year not only garnered the Territorial flyweight title, but went on to annext the National AAU Flyweight champ- ionshop.

Mercado’s defeat from Shiroma was the only setback suffered by the classy southpaw that year.

The former Waiakea Mill boy returned from the Coast only a few weeks ago where he was featured in the main ovents against such boys as Jackie Jurich and Horace Mann. Billy Newman managed Shiroma on the Mainland, but Haywood (Sharkey) Wright is handling Joho presently.

Two more interesting bouts will support the Shiroma- Dado fight. They are the Yasu Yasutake-Cris Crispin semifinal and the Willie Gonzales-Lucas Pasion i^eturn preliminary go.

Yasutake has scored 10 straight knockouts in as many starts which is a new territorial record. In Cris Crispin, Yasutake will meet a capable and a seasoned boxer. This match is expected to be a slugger vs. a boxer affair. The Hawaii kayo king is heavily favored to win by a knockout in many quarters.

When Gonzales take on Pasion in the return go, he will be out to avenge the fourth round knockout that he suffered in their last meeting. These two fighters put up a real slugfest several weeks ago and their fight stole the whole show.

* * ♦ *

The outlook of the University of Utah football team to invade Honolulu over the Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays against Healanis and the University of Hawaii turned very gloomy when the Pan-American Air-

■vays revealed that they will be unable to fly the Redskins to Honolulu late next month.

A last and final appeal will be made to the Matson Steamship Co. by Pump Searle, athletic director at the University of Hawaii.

The University of Hawaii officials have asked Sam King, IHrvvaii’s delegate to Congress, to see what he can do to help •Utah.

They hope that cancellations in San Francisco of pass- : tges on the Lurline leaving December 11 will enable the Utes to board the ship for Honolulu.

If the University of Utah is unable to come to the islands, the University of Nevada’s December 20th game wit t)e postponed and they will play in the holiday games.

According to the latest words from Jimmy Murray, former Honolulu promoter who is now handling a stable of fighters around Southern California, he wants Yasu Yasutake to come to the Hollywood fisticolony.

In Murray’s letter, he writes, “Yasu would be a great iraw here, what with the big Japanese colony living around ':his section.”

However, Manager Sam Ichinose is cold toward the coast nvasion offer for the time being. “Maybe later, after he ots more seasoning,” comments Sam. R ose,B ow l gam e.
