Upcoming County 4-H Office Staff Changes

Office Assistant Rose Aigner and Program Representative Sherry Mills will be leaving their positions in June.

Rose's last day in the office will be June 6, and Sherry's last day will be June 30.

Santa Barbara County 4-H Management Board Brief:

The 4-H Management Board met on April 28, 2014. The Board is pleased to announce two new Board members: Heathyr Knowles has

been appointed Outreach and Visibility Director and Jennifer Biely Morgan has been appointed Fundraising/Gift Giving Director.

Interviews for positions of Directors terming off the board June 30 will be completed soon. The Board again discussed cash flow and

continues to monitor expenditures closely. Budgets for the next fiscal year will be based on income that we know will be coming in.

Unfortunately, this will cause a significant decrease to the amount of money to be budgeted for expenses this next year. It is hopeful that this

will help to alleviate some of the cash flow issues that we have each year as we have not been able to raise the amount of funds that had been projected. The board also approved allowing Key Leaders and Management Board Directors that have budgets to have discretion

within their budget area to re-budget between line items or change the budget up to an accumulation of $2,000 as needed given the their

budget remains within their overall approved budget amount. If there are changes that a Key Leaders or director wants to make that exceeds

this amount they can be brought before the management board for consideration. The 4-H Office will also be seeing some changes in the coming months as Rose Aigner’s position is not being continued and Sherry Mills is retiring. Sherry’s last day will be June 30, 2014. The

next meeting will be June 23, 2014, location to be determined. This is a joint meeting of the Program Development Board and the Management

Board.

The Santa Barbara County 4-H Office will be CLOSED July 2-4, 2014 (Wednesday-Friday)

Normal office hours will resume on Monday, July 7 2014 at 9:00am.

New Directors Joining the Management Board

Mary Thieleke Jackson, Chair, is pleased to introduce Ron Vieira, Janelle Marchiando Hansen and Kim Densmore to the Santa Barbara County 4-H

Management Board, beginning their terms on July 1, 2014. We are excited to have these experienced leaders joining our county leadership team.

Ron Vieira, Assistant Chair, is currently the community club leader of our newest 4-H club, Playa Del Sur. Born and raised in the Santa Barbara/Carpinteria area, Ron resides in Ventura. He remains committed to the community in which he grew up. Married for 28 years to wife, Becky they have a 23 year old daughter, Rachael, both of whom are adult leaders with the Playa Del Sur 4-H Club. During his career, Ron has owned and operated various businesses from retail to restaurants. He has currently gone back to school and is studying for a degree in Psychology/ Counseling.

New to 4-H, Ron joined the organization 3 years ago. During those three years he has been a project leader, community club leader, and county-wide committee member on the Youth Leadership Committee and the Large Animal Science Committee. Ron was the recipient of the 2012-2013 California State 4–H Golden Clover Award for Emerging Leader.

Ron’s experience working and leading young people began at 16, coaching various athletic teams. He has been a coach or leader for the Boys Scouts, the Boys and Girls Club, and FFA. He describes his leadership style as “leading by example” and “being part of the team”. These will serve him well in his responsibilities as liaison to various boards, and in his position as assistant director. Ron hopes to bring his experience from working with youth, his leadership from his past businesses, and insight and knowledge from his continuing education to assist in his position on the board. "My passion has always been helping kids believe in themselves and find their success."

New Directors Joining the Management BoardJanelle Marchiando Hansen, Treasurer, born and raised in Goleta, currently resides in Orcutt. Her father was a 4-H member in his youth and passed on the tradition to Janelle and her siblings. She was an active member in Goleta East 4-H Club and a Santa Barbara County All Star, attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and earning her degree in Child Development. In 1992, she and her husband, Chris, moved to Sacramento where both of their children were born. In 1996, they decided to move back to Santa Barbara County to be closer to family and settled in Santa Maria where Chris was born and raised.

When her children became old enough to join 4-H, Janelle was eager to have them enroll. They joined the Los Amigos 4-H Club in Santa Maria and Janelle started as a project leader, then co-community club leader before taking on the role of club treasurer advisor serving 4 years. When Camp Wahoo! was in need of a cook, she tied on her apron and went to work (only after promising her daughter that she would stay in the kitchen). The apron finally came off 5 years later!

Janelle currently works for the Orcutt School District as a Special Education Instructional Assistant and for a physical therapy group as a water arthritis exercise instructor working with adults. Janelle truly is able to works with people of all ages.

After a short break from 4-H, Janelle knew she would be back, and is ready to jump in as Treasurer of the Management Board and especially looking forward to working with the club treasurers and their advisors. 4-H has been such an important part of she and her family’s life and she wants to help make sure that it continues on for the youth of Santa Barbara County. During her recent interview, Janelle stated “this position (as treasurer) is appealing to me as it allows me the opportunity to be involved at the county level, on the board, and also at the club level, working with the treasurers.”

You can contact Janelle at [email protected]

Our new Secretary, Kim Densmore, was born in Okinawa, Japan to a military family. After traveling the world she settled in Vandenberg Village making her big move to Santa Maria in 1984. Kim became interested and involved in 4-H nearly 10 years ago while looking for extracurricular activities for daughter, Danielle. In the years since, Kim led the table setting project and been the board advisor for the Los Amigos 4-H Club.

Kim spent 30 years as a Deputy Probation Officer with Santa Barbara County. During her extensive career, she was also Probation Supervisor and, before retiring, County Deputy Probation Officer Manager. This experience will serve us well as a Director of our middle management leadership team.

Kim was also a compelling speaker for Santa Barbara County 4-H last year during the County Board of Supervisor budget hearings. In her message to the Board of Supervisors Kim stated: “As a Probation Officer and 4-H parent, I never witnessed a 4-H child enter the juvenile justice arena. I did however witness first and second time offenders who then joined 4-H, complete their probation successfully and not return to the system.” We are honored to have someone with Kim’s unique perspective join our board.

Having retired a year ago, Kim is looking forward to serving as Board Secretary as a way to give back to the 4-H organization that has done so much for her daughter.

In response to 4-H members' and volunteers' input and desire to explore options for a new uniform, the State 4-H Incentives and Recognition Advisory Committee is facilitating the process to adopt a new uniform.

We asked 4-H members to submit their design ideas for a State 4-H uniform. After reviewing the entries, the large majority of proposals included blue jeans as well as have options for dressing up or down depending on what they are doing. Therefore the State Incentives and Recognition Advisory Committee is presenting a standard uniform with a variety of options to the membership for your consideration.

After the polls close on June 30, 2014, the 4-H State Recognition and Incentives Committee will analyze and evaluate the results and make recommendations to the Associate Director of 4-H Program and Policy in early 2015. The new uniform selection is a process and will take time to implement. We anticipate that there will be a transition period to the new uniform and an implementation process will be developed in the coming months--there will not be implemented changes that affect 2014 fair or other summer programs and events.

The California 4-H policy that states that the uniform is not required for participation will remain in place, regardless of the options chosen.
