We, the parish of Saints Mary and Mathias Catholic Church, WELCOME all to CELEBRATE, TEACH and LIVE the Mission of JESUS CHRIST Ss. Mary & Mathias Church 215 W. 8th St. Muscatine, IA 52761 From the Pastors Desk November 17th, 2019 Over the past month or so, throughout our “Response Ability” mes- sage series, we have been focusing on our need, on our ability to respond to the blessings that God sets before us. We began by taking a look at prayer as our response to God’s goodness present in our lives. We learned the importance of praying in thanksgiving for God’s breakthroughs and blessings in our lives. We learned to never give up, even when it seems that God is dis- tant or non-responsive to our prayers. Finally, we learned the most humble prayer of all, a prayer that acknowledged God’s greatness and our uer depend- ence on His grace. “Lord, have mercy on me a sin- ner.” Over the past several weeks, we have taken a look at how we ought to respond to the Lord when it comes to our finances. We learned the importance of taking an honest look at how we approach money. Like Zac- chaeus, maybe we need a change of heart and need to give more to the poor. We learned that we are God’s money managers and that when we give to the poor, when we give to advance God’s Kingdom we are storing up for ourselves treasures in heaven. This week, we connue to explore our responsibility when it comes to being good stewards of the financial resources God has given us. Just as the poor widow gave her enre livelihood, we too ought to take me to pray about how much we offer as a sacrificial giſt to our parish and how much we offer to the poor and other worthy charies. Jesus challenges us to see our sacrificial offering of our financial treasure as an act of worship. Aſter all, it’s not so much about giving to a need. Rather, it’s all about our need to give. From the Pastors Desk November 17th, 2019 Over the past month or so, throughout our “Response Ability” mes-sage series, we have been focusing on our need, on our ability to

respond to the blessings that God sets before us. We began by taking a look at prayer as our response to God’s goodness present in our lives. We learned the importance of praying in thanksgiving for God’s breakthroughs and blessings in our lives. We learned to never give up, even when it seems that God is dis-tant or non-responsive to our prayers. Finally, we learned the most humble prayer of all, a prayer that acknowledged God’s greatness and our utter depend-ence on His grace. “Lord, have mercy on me a sin-ner.”

Over the past several weeks, we have taken a look at how we ought to respond to the Lord when it comes to our finances. We learned the importance of taking an honest look at how we approach money. Like Zac-chaeus, maybe we need a change of heart and need to give more to the poor. We learned that we are God’s money managers and that when we give to the poor, when we give to advance God’s Kingdom we are storing up for ourselves treasures in heaven.

This week, we continue to explore our responsibility when it comes to being good stewards of the financial resources God has given us. Just as the poor widow gave her entire livelihood, we too ought to take time to pray about how much we offer as a sacrificial gift to our parish and how much we offer to the poor and other worthy charities. Jesus challenges us to see our sacrificial offering of our financial treasure as an act of worship. After all, it’s not so much about giving to a need. Rather, it’s all about our need to give.

Did You Know? A Walk through the Mass: Liturgy of the Eucharist Part 2

Following the Preface and the singing of the Holy, Holy, the Liturgy of the Eucharist continues with the Eucharistic Prayer. The Eucharistic Prayer is the heart of the Mass. It is a prayer of thanksgiving directed to the Father, through Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. There are four Eucharistic Prayers which may be used dur-ing normal weekday and Sunday Masses. Eucharistic Prayer I is also known as the Roman Canon as it invokes the intercession of the 12 Apostles and many of the Popes and Martyrs of the early Church. Eucharistic Prayer II is the shortest of the Eucharistic Prayers and is often used for weekday Masses. Eucharistic Prayer III em-phasizes the role of the Holy Spirit. Eucharistic Prayer IV has its own proper Preface and contains many references to the Holy Scriptures.

There are other Eucharistic Prayers which may be used at times. There are two Eu-charistic Prayers for Reconciliation that are appropriate during Lent and Advent, the two penitential seasons of the Liturgical Year. There is also a set of four Eucharistic Prayers that may be used when one of the Masses for Various Needs and Occasions is used (For Peace and Justice, For Vocations to the Priesthood, etc…). Next week, we will take a closer look at the sections that make up each Eucharistic Prayer.

Thanksgiving Mass Canned Food Donation Please join us for our Thanksgiving Mass on Wednesday, November 27 at 6:30pm. It will include donations of non-perishable items dur-ing the presentation of the gifts. Father will invite us all to the altar of the Lord to make our donations as a community of Christ during the offertory. We hope to see you on this blessed occasion!

Salvation Army Christmas Trees It's that time of year again-the Salvation Army Christmas Trees will be up on No-vember 16th!! Please return all gifts UNWRAPPED with the paper ornament at-tached (the one you selected from the tree). Salvation Army is asking all gifts be delivered to the church no later than December 8th. I realize this seems extremely early. This allows them to sort all of the gifts, set multiple dates for families to shop, and gets the gifts to the families in time for them to wrap for Christmas. There will be a tree at the front of the church by the chapel and a tree in Gannon Hall. I will add ornaments as needed. Thank you so much for your generosity and God bless you! Gift ideas: For the younger kids- books, boots, mittens, coats, PJ's, slippers, toys, arts and crafts For the older kids- personal hygiene items, socks, books, gift cards- examples: Jimmy Johns, Taco Johns, Sal-vatores, McDonalds, Subway, Fridley Theater, Rose Bowl, Hibbetts, Wal-Mart

Please keep in your prayers the 39

youth and the 17 adults attending

SAINTS MAY AND MATHIAS PARISH DIRECTORY UPDATE: We have received information for proofread-ing, etc. While it truly was our hope to have the Directory available for you our parish family in mid October, it will not

happen. Sister Cheryl, Maria Frausto & Denise Collier are working with Universal Church Directories to make sure that our Directory has correct information. We thank you for your patience!! Our goal is to have the Parish Directory ready for you

as a beautiful Christmas gift!

Saints Mary & Mathias School Corner From the Principal's Desk

On behalf of the entire Saints Mary and Mathias Catholic School family I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire par-ish. Your generosity, spirt of community, and kindness were overwhelming as we all came together and raised over $120,000 at the annual Fall Auction this year. It is only because of the generosity of our benefactors that such a thing is possible!

Upcoming Events:

I’d also like to invite our parish community to our annual Christmas concert. This year’s Christmas concert will be held on December 5th at 6:30 pm in the school gym.
