Dear Good People of St. Mary!

I believe that God...has a sense of humor! Why else would he have me think of the children’s spiritual “Who Built The Ark” when my backyard was flooded from the spring rains we had recently? I had water for so many days that a pair of ducks took up residence! After the second rainfall the Black spiritual “Wade In The Water” came to mind. (The Fisk Jubilee Singers do a wonderful rendition of this spiritual.) This was appropriate! I rented a pump and had to wade to the back property to set it up!

When I was thinking about what to share with you in this Liturgical Musings I was inspired by nature. Well actually, I was inspired by people that I met while walking the dog and enjoying the beauty of the outside. The flowers and bird songs were especially satisfying. People seemed to be taking advantage of the COVID-19 issue by slowing down, getting out, and taking a walk. An underlying theme that came up in my conversations with neighbors and strangers was the word “HOPE”. I heard...“I HOPE that a vaccine is found soon.” “I HOPE my daughter’s layoff doesn’t last too long.” “I HOPE we can get back to Mass soon. I really miss going to church!” Then I thought of my own HOPE regarding my water problem HOPING the drainage issue has been resolved! And there it was. My idea for this Musings! What better way to share musical thoughts with you than through our mutual “HOPE in the Lord”?

Doing research on this topic I found it interesting that my Oxford English Dictionary defined HOPE as “a feeling that something you want may happen”. It defined hopeless as “a feeling of despair”. When I looked in my Concordance for song theme ideas HOPE was defined as “a reliance on God’s blessings and provision” and “the expectation of future good”. Hmmm, isn’t it just like God to have us look for the rainbow and not the rain clouds? Remember the Ark story and God’s promise to Noah and to us!?

The three great virtues that the New Testament calls for in Christians are Faith, Hope, and Charity which is also called Love (I Corinthians 13:13). I will save Faith and Charity/Love for future Musings so this one is all about HOPE. You may already know that the Book of Psalms is a great source of comfort and HOPE. Hymns based on the Psalms also share those ideals. Then there are other songs, some religious, some secular, that infer the HOPE that God wants us to have. The following lists are some music examples of HOPE expressed in Psalms, Hymns, and Songs. They include a broad repertoire of music styles and for some of you...I would guess music tastes! I have included the scripture verse or partial verse where applicable. Of course, the repertoire is limited in scope due to space concerns in this column but I HOPE you will enjoy their connections to the theme.

PSALMS of HOPEPsalm 23: Shepherd Me, O God (by Marty Haugen)(vs 3) Though I should walk in the valley of death, I fear no evil, for you are at my side,Your rod and your staff, my comfort, my HOPE.

Psalm 33: Blessed The People (by Randall Debruyn)(vs 5) Our soul waits for the Lord, who is our help and shield. May your kindness, O Lord, be upon us who have put our HOPE in you.

HYMNS based on HOPEIn Every Age (based on Psalm 90 by Janet Sullivan Whitaker)(Refrain) In ev’ry age, O God, you have been our refuge. In ev’ry age, O God, you have been our HOPE.

This Alone (based on Psalm 27 by Tim Manion)(vs 3) Wait on the Lord, and HOPE in His mercy. Wait on the Lord, and live in His love.

HYMNS that infer HOPEBe Not Afraid (Bob Dufford S.J.), I Know That My Redeemer Lives (Scott Soper), Lord Of All Hopefulness (SLANE, traditional Irish melody), The Lord Is My Hope (M.D.Ridge), and, You Are Mine (David Haas)

Ten CONTEMPORARY songs of HOPEAll My Hope (Hillsong), Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone (Chris Tomlin). Hope In Jesus ( Josh Lavender), Hope Is Dawning (Matt Maher), Hope Of The World (Hillsong), Hope To Carry On (Rich Mullins), In Christ Alone/My Hope Is Found (Keith Getty), Living Hope (Phil Wickham), Lord Of All Hopefulness (Timothy R. Smith), and, My Hope Is In You (Aaron Shust).

A dear friend of the parish shares a love for Southern Gospel music with me. Listen to the song “The Blind Man (He Saw God)” sung by the Booth Brothers for a great Gospel style song with the message of HOPE. My final example is a “golden oldie” and one of my favorites. I HOPE to use it for a future Liturgy. Part of the lyrics go as follows:“Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise, when song gives place to sighing, when HOPE within me dies, I draw closer to Him, from care He sets me free: His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

On this Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ may you find HOPE and belief in His real presence to guide you and protect you all the days of your life. God bless you!
