TOP TEN GIFTS

Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien have tried it on late night television but that's not what's making Perplexus so popular. It's not even because it's in the running for the best educational toy of the year. Sure, those might be the reasons why parents are scooping up the hand-held maze but it's not why kids love it so much. Getting a ball from Point A to Point B is as fun as it is challenging, which is why the staff at the Granville Island Toy Company have been recommending it so highly. There are three versions: Rookie, for ages four and up ($22.99); Original, ages eight and up ($24.99); and Epic, for whoever wants to take it on ($29.99). Available at toy stores throughout the city.

Sometimes the best present is a night out, and two tickets to a Vancouver play makes everyone a winner. Sure, there are the great ethics of the gift of the stage: supporting the arts and stimulating a vital component of the economy. But mostly our local theatre scene is comprised of some really awesome people who want nothing more for their audience than to entertain, engage and inspire them. The Arts Club’s Blood Brothers — a musical about twins separated at birth who fall in love with the same woman — is receiving raves. To Dec. 31 at Granville Island Stage, 8pm (Mon, Wed-Sat), 7:30pm (Tues). Matinees: Wed, Sat 2pm. $29-$54 from 604-687-1644. Blackbird Theatre continues its unique tradition of invigorating the usual theatre dead space between Christmas and New Year’s with Samuel Beckett’s classic Waiting for Godot (pictured), Dec. 27-Jan. 21 at The Cultch, 8pm. $16-$38.39 from TheCultch.com. And critical darlings Elec-tric Company Theatre’s All the Way Home promises to be among the most innovative and interactive theatre productions you’ve ever seen. Jan. 10-14 at Queen Elizabeth Theatre, 8pm. Tickets $20-$30 from ElectricCompanyTheatre.com.

Leonard Cohen: The Complete Albums Collection): His voice has morphed from a monotone poet’s lilt to a bottomless, husky growl. His master/submissive relationship with language made him one of the 20th century’s most prolifi c songwriters — simply because the page couldn’t contain his words. Now we have Leonard Cohen’s 17-album deluxe box set, a gorgeous must-have for any fan. Each album comes in a mini-LP replica CD jacket plus an es-say by Pico Iver and a 36-page book-let with annotations and recording info. A standard-edition box set is also available, though it features no live albums, just 11 studio releases. Standard edition $69.99 and deluxe edition $139.99 at music retailers.

bkr (MyBKR.com) is a 500ml, BPA-free, reuse-able and recyclable glass and sillicone bottle inspired by modern art and minimalism. Avail-able in three jewel tones and a soft grey, bkr is perfect for the stylish eco-crusader. $29.95 at all YYoga locations (YYoga.ca) and the Van-couver Art Gallery Store (750 Hornby).

Gifts for dogs can sometimes be a bit cheesy but this offer-ing from the This & That Canine Co. is cheesier than most. It really is cheese. But the Everest version of the Chew This line of dog treats has been hardened so much — fol-lowing a method used in Nepal, hence its name — that it lasts much longer than most treats. And it’s 100 per cent natural with no chemicals, preservatives or fi llers. It’s an excellent alternative for dogs with allergies and intoler-ances and is proving to be a popular Christmas treat $7.99 to $19.99 across Vancouver. We found this one at Bosleys (1683 Davie, 3502 W. 41st, 814 W. 6th, 6914 Victoria, 1087 Marinaside Cr. and 3045 W. Broadway, Bosleys.com).

For all of us who want our hot drinks to stay hot and our cold drinks to stay cold — the Bodum 8oz Pavino double-wall glass. The double wall also creates a thermal effect. Set of 6 is $49. Also available in 2.5oz. size for $39. Available at Cookworks (1548 W. Broadway and 377 Howe, CookWorks.ca).

There’s something about a beautifully designed journal cover that inspires us to take a bit more time to write down our thoughts. No short-form or quickie-email language allowed. The gorgeous design pays tribute to the effort it takes to explore our feelings and experiences with words. PaperBlanks is a Vancouver-based company that sells its journals, notepaper, address books, day planners and guest books to some of the top retail stores in North America. Prices range from $12.95 to $29.95; this 7-by-9-inch Safavid version is $24.95. Available at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Banyen Books, Oscar’s Art Books, Chapters/Indigo and Book Warehouse. If you want to get a bit more creative with your iPhone photos, try the Olloclip. At $70 it’s a less expensive op-tion than Apple’s lens adapter. Available online ( Olloclip.com) or through Point of View Cameras. (PointofViewCameras.ca, 105-2050 Scotia, 877-768-2261).

Go with the grain with Union Wood Com-pany’s reclaimed-wood cheese tray. Made from the fi r rafters of a demolished Main Street building that once housed an RCMP livery, artisan Craig Pearce’s rough-hewn work is used at several Gastown hotspots, including the custom platters at Meat & Bread and as the base of the charcuterie plate at House Guest. Avail-able in two handle mounts (top or side) and two fi nishes (natural or whitewashed). $80 from Union Wood Company Shop (503 Railway, 604-675-9033, UnionWood-Co.com) and The Cross (1198 Homer, 604-689-2900, TheCrossDesign.com).

HOLIDAY FASHION

Local designers put verve and style into their workby Anna Killen

In Vancouver, the push to buy and support locally made goods is a year-round campaign, with plenty of weekend pop-up shops, street markets and neighbourhood shop hops.

At Christmas, this campaign is ramped up, with pop-up shops holding more permanent court (see the Local-E shop at 235 Cambie, from Dec. 2 to 18) and major social media campaigns encourag-ing the masses to buy handmade Vancouver wares (see the Shop Local Vancouver Facebook page that highlights local businesses and asks shoppers to “Occupy Local”).

Not only are local shops great places to buy unique, one-of-a-kind gifts (these pages are proof of that), but the fashionable folks who run them are usu-ally a good resource for help fi nding that perfect holiday outfi t.

After browsing the racks at local boutiques One of a Few (354 Water, 604-605-0685. OneO-fAFew.com), Mintage (1714 Commercial, 604-646-8234) and Charlie and Lee (223 Union, 604-558-3030, CharlieAndLee.com), it’s clear that this year’s holiday trends go beyond the stan-dard little black dress. Think wide-leg cranberry-coloured pants, ’40s-inspired pleated dresses , sparkly jackets, glittering accents and metallic anything (because really, when else — other than during the holiday season — can you get away with gold lamé?).

Kove Knitwear Winter Captain Fringe $56Handmade using a wool and acrylic blend that’s warm, soft and never itchy, Kove’s Vancouver-made knitwear in easy-to-pair neutrals is chic and func-tional. The Winter Captain Fringe is fun and versa-tile. Wear it under a pea coat, over a T-shirt, or even as a big chunky necklace over a fl owing black dress. Also note that the Raincity Boot Warmers (available online) are the perfect cure for a cold rubber boot. (Kove.ca. Available at Fine Finds Boutique, 1014 Mainland, 604-669-8325)

The Positive Energy Band promises to keep spirits bright through the power of negative ions. Maybe that’s why celeb devotees like Kiera Knightley and Alexander Skarsgard always seem so chipper. Or it could just be that they’re huge movie stars with gobs of cash. Only one way to fi nd out... $19.99, available in 10 happy colours at London Drugs (LondonDrugs.com for locations).

Granted Button Mittens $49.50By now you’ve probably realized that win-ter gloves and touchscreen phones aren’t exactly friends. So go ahead, buy a pair of fi ngerless gloves (they’re everywhere), but consider also buying a pair of these cosy, Vancouver-made, hand-knit wool mittens — because sometimes it’s nice to have an excuse to keep your phone in your pocket. (Available at Lynnsteven, 225 Car-rall, 604-899-0808, GrantedClothing.com, LynnSteven.com)

Leather goods from T Leather $60-$340Local designer Tam Fuller crafts her hand-sewn leather accessories (wallets, bags, card holders, belts) using hearty materials such as cognac and oxblood leather, and brass, copper and nickel fi xtures and buckles. Her minimal designs are timeless and built to last — not to mention incredibly affordable ($60 for a handmade leather belt is nothing to scoff at). We love her ladies long wallet ($90) — no metal fi xtures, just leather and care. (Available at Nouvelle Nouvelle, 209 Abbott, 604-682-2234, NouvelleNouvelle.com)

Army of Rokosz Jewelry $120-$280A long-time favourite on the Vancouver craft circuit, metal-smith Andrea Rokosz’s jewelry line (ranging from edgy skull rings, to funky tusk necklaces, to delicate crystal earrings) is fi nally getting some major play from local retailers. Each unique piece is a showstopper — she hand carves and casts the gender-neutral, sterling silver pieces herself — but our favourite is the sleek Stacked Ring — just the right amount of tough. HOLIDAY AT GRANVILLE ISLAND

A pioneer in the fair trade movement, Ten Thousand Villages celebrates its 65th anniversary

By Martha Perkins

L ong before the term fair trade even existed, Ten Thousand Villages was founded on the belief that

everyone deserves to earn a fair wage for their work.

But while that commitment to an ethical business model provides an added impetus to shop at the store, what’s made Ten Thousand Vil-lages endure for 65 years is what’s on the shelves — beautifully handcrafted items that revel in the culture and artistry of people from around the world.

“I am probably one of our best customers because I love to ac-cessorize,” says Roxanne Cave, manager of the Granville Island location. (There are also stores on Denman, Commercial and W. Broadway.)

She’s wearing a pretty black bead choker that was made in India, paired with black onyx earrings that she also bought at the store.

When it comes to fair trade, Cave, who was recognized by Fair Trade Canada as one of the move-ment’s pioneers, not only talks the talk. She walks the walk with fl air and style.

In the doorway to her cramped offi ce hangs one of the store’s best sellers — a canopy of brightly coloured stars that helps the per-son who enters leave all the bad things of the day behind. Coffee and chocolate are also perennial favourites with customers and at Christmas there are dozens of gifts you can buy for under $10.

One of the things she loves most about the company is the relation-ships it’s forged with the people who make the products. Ten Thou-sand Villages not only guarantees them a steady and secure market so they can invest in infrastruc-ture, but it also ensures that workers are properly compensated. It has a relatively low mark-up so most of the money stays with the artisan.

“They trust us,” Cave says. “We

A French royal wedding

What makes Epoisses the perfect cheese for a holiday get-together? You need to have a few people sharing it because once it’s opened, you might not want to put it back in your fridge. Epoisses is

called the queen of cheeses but to smell her, you’d think she reigned over a barnyard. There’s a certain je ne sais quoi — let’s say earthiness — to her. In short, she stinks. But don’t trust your nose. This queen has divine rights to the title. Epoisses has a surprisingly heavenly taste. Silky, creamy goodness.Available year-round at Les Amis du Fromage (1752 W. 2nd and 843 E. Hastings, BuyCheese.ca).

The queen of cheeses will enjoy a true love mar-

riage with a wine of character and royal lineage, such as a fi ne Chardonnay from Burgundy like a Chas-sagne-Montrachet or her cousin from the village of Meursault in the Cotes-de Beaune area. Look for the Louis Jadot label which is always a sure value, even in the ge-neric Chardonnays.

E gyptians buried their Pharoahs, with all their treasures, in pyramids. The richness of the Leonidas pyramid reveals itself when you drop in it a cup of hot milk. As the pyr-

amid melts, it releases an irresistible aroma — not to mention all that wonderful high-quality Belgian chocolate. Treat yourself to a moment of relax-ation. Available in three fl avours: Caramel Choco-late, Classic Chocolate and Cappuccino Chocolate. $12.95 for a box of 15 pyramids. Leonidas Water-front Café (29-1055 Canada Place, 604-647-7559, LeonidasWaterfront.com).

D ream of hosting dinner parties suitable for a prince, but have the dining room space of a pau-per? Look no further than the Goliath Table — with fi ve drop-in leaves, this 43 cm (17 inch) console table extends to a 292cm (115inch) dinner table that’s large enough to seat 10 guests in comfort. Available in wood and glass fi nishes, the Goliath Table starts at $3,567 from Resource

F or Vancouver writer Evaleen Jaager Roy, there’s a different chef for every season. Her tribute to the beauties of our gardens and the bounties of our restaurants, Four Chefs One Garden, is a seasonal guide

to good eating and growing. For readers who are gardeners, each section not only gives you practical advice on what will grow well that season, but she encourages her readers to slow down and, yes, smell the roses (summer), rhododen-drons (spring), hibiscus (autumn), and hellebores (winter).

For readers who are gourmands, she pairs each season with a chef who brings the fl avours of the season to life: Mi-chel Jacob of Le Crocodile (spring); Umberto Menghi of Il Giardino, Il Caminetto, Trattoria and Umberto’s (summer); Hidekazu Tojo of Tojo’s (autumn); and Vikram Vij of Vij’s and Rangoli (winter).

With winter solstice soon upon us — and the hope it brings of longer days — we turn to Vikram Vij to fi ll us with the warm glow of a wonderful dinner shared with family and friends.

Vij Family’s Chicken CurryServes 6

½ cup (125 ml) canola oil2 cups (500 ml) fi nely chopped onion (2 large)3 inch (7.5 ml) stick of cinnamon3 tbsp (45 ml) fi nely chopped fresh garlic 2 tbsp (30 ml) fi nely chopped peeled ginger2 cups (500 m) chopped tomatoes (2 large)1 tbsp (15 ml) salt1 tbsp (15 ml) ground cumin1 tbsp (15 ml) ground coriander1 tbsp (15 ml) garam masala 1 tsp (5 ml) turmeric ½ tsp (2 ml) ground black pepper½ tsp (2 ml) ground cayenne pepper

3 lbs (1.5 kg) chicken thighs, bone in1 cup (250 ml) sour cream, stirred (do not add if wish a lighter curry)2 cups (500 ml) water½ cup (125 ml) chopped cilantro (including stems)

In a large pan, heat oil on medium heat for 1 minute. Add onions and cinnamon and sauté for 5 to 8 minutes, until onions are golden. Add garlic and sauté for another 4 min-utes. Add ginger, tomatoes, salt, cumin, coriander, garam masala, tumeric, black pepper, and cayenne. Cook this masa-la for 5 minutes or until the oil separates from the masala.

Remove skin from chicken thighs and discard. Wash thighs, pat dry and add to the masala. Stir well. Cook chicken thighs for 10 minutes, uncovered, until chicken looks cooked on the outside. Add sour cream and water and stir well. Increase the heat to medium-high. When curry starts to boil, cover, reduce heat to medium, and cook for 15 minutes, stirring 2 or 3 times until chicken is completely cooked. Poke the thighs with a knife. If the meat is still pink, cook for 5 more minutes. Remove and discard the cin-namon stick. Cool curry for at least half an hour. Transfer cooked chicken to a mixing bowl. Wearing latex gloves, peel chicken meat off the bones. Discard bones and stir chicken back into the curry. Just before serving, heat curry on medium heat until it starts to boil lightly. Stir in cilantro. Divide curry equally among six bowls and serve.

Players draw a variety of delicious ingredients and play them one at a time onto the board, building off of each other’s previously placed ingredients. The beautiful game pieces will have you ordering take-out before you can win the game, so don’t confuse your green wasabi points for the real thing! The price is $42.99

The month leading up to Christmas, Cha-nukah and Kwanza is a fl urry of holiday activity — a good portion of which is due to the demands of decorating home and

hearth. Superstore and The Bay offer a wide selec-tion of colourful things with which to deck your halls, sure, but the city’s many holiday craft fairs offer alternatives that are just as festive and more unique, with less of that machine-made industrial perfection. Herewith, a few of the favourite tree trimmers and hall deckers we’ve found.

Felt Christmas Light Garland from The Rice Babies (above) $15 Adorable doesn’t even begin to describe the crafty, retro-pastiche chic of The Rice Babies’ old-school Christmas tree lights rendered in child-like felt. Eco- and kid-friendly, they capture the joy of the nearly forgotten bright lights that twinkled in every window before the tyranny of the energy-saving LED light robbed the holidays of much of their lustre. Sold as a string of 20. Available at Portobello West’s last show of 2011, Dec. 10-11 at the Creekside Community Centre in the Olympic Village (1 Athlete’s Way), 11am-5pm. For vendor and admission info, visit PortobelloWest.com

Timber Green Ornaments (left) $7 each or $28 for a set of 15 Whether you’re cutting down a healthy evergreen or uncrating a plastic-fantastic model, your Christmas tree choice has an unfortunate eco-impact. At least the ornaments don’t have to. Timber Green’s rustic, eco-friendly ornaments are crafted from sustainably harvested Wisconsin wood. Artists Matt Van Susteren and Amie Elizabeth source materials from their family-owned forest, and each piece is laser-cut and hand-fi nished. Available at Vancouver’s One of a Kind Show at the Vancouver Convention Centre (1055 Canada Place), Dec. 8-11. For vendor and admission info, visit OneOfAKindVancouver.com

Plauener Spitzen Embroidery (right) $3.50 to $69 As with most things, Germans take their Christ-mas traditions very seriously. The Plauener Spitzen company, known the world over for its delicate, hand-crafted lace table runners and ornaments, has long been associated with decorating Yuletide tables and trimming the perfect Tannenbaum. Available at the Vancouver Christmas Market running to Dec. 24 at Queen Elizabeth Theatre Plaza (Hamilton at Georgia), 11am-9pm. For vendor and admission info, visit VancouverChristmasMarket.com
