Short films from both the Vancouver Latino American Film Festival and internationally awarded Vancouver Film School students will be presented, as well as the spring/summer collection of designer Dominique Hanke; all in concert with music by saxophonist Jen Charters with DJ Daniyah Angel, and soul/funk group, The Ponderosas. Proceeds from the show will be donated to Homes Huichol — a chari-table institution in Jalisco, Mexico, that provides accommodation to ailing Aboriginal Peoples. In addition to supporting this charity, Lab Art Show 2 will be showcasing artwork by Mexican Aboriginals. “We are not only cel-ebrating art, but featuring local talented artists who may otherwise have a limited outlet to showcase their work,” says show creator Gloria Bernal. The show takes place over two days, April 11-12, at the Heritage Hall at 6102 Main. Tickets are $10/$15. Glitz-Entertainment.com

When times get tough, just danceBased on the Academy Award-nominated 2000 film and featur-ing music by Elton John, Billy Elliot is the story of its name-sake star, a young boy in a depressed working-class mining town in the north of England. Set during the history-making 1984 miners’ strike, the show follows Billy, the youngest child of a blue-collar family that has recently lost its Mum, as he stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class. While Billy’s father and brother take to the picket lines of the violent and life-changing strike, Billy secretly begins to study the art of dance with the help of a hard-drinking, chain-smoking local dance teacher. But as Billy blossoms and thrives, the world around him continues to wither—and his only escape may be the prestigious Royal Ballet School, a place no working-class boy has ever gone, or been allowed to go to, before. Presented by Broadway Across Canada, Billy Elliot the Musical is on now at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre until April 7. Tickets are avail-able at Ticketmaster.ca or toll-free 1.855.985.5000. Pot-smoking BC residents are increasingly being banned

from entering the US as American border guards try to stem the ow of Canadian marijuana tourists in the wake of Washington State’s weed legalization vote late last year.

Blaine lawyer Len Saunders said he’s see-ing more cases of BC residents being permanently denied entry after trying to carry pot across the border, thinking it’s no longer an issue.

Because marijuana is now legal to possess under state law, Canadians caught bringing less than an ounce across aren’t charged, as they were in the past.

“I’m seeing no prosecutions — zero since No-vember,” Saunders said. “But there’s more confu-sion.”

What happens now, he said, is pot-packing Canucks have their stash con scated and are then interrogated under oath about their drug-using habits.

Admit that you’ve ever smoked or used mari-juana in your life, he said, and you’re deemed inadmissable to the US because you’ve confessed to a crime of moral turpitude.

“The key is to not admit that you’ve ever used it,” Saunders said, stressing he isn’t counselling

anyone to lie under oath.He noted anyone could

be questioned about past marijuana use at the bor-der, whether Customs and Border Protection agents nd pot on them or not.

Past studies have found a majority of BC residents report using marijuana at least once.

Saunders said he’s increasingly had calls from Canadians deemed inadmissable over pot use who say they can’t believe it happened to them and

must now apply for a tough-to-obtain re-entry waiver also required for anyone with a criminal conviction who wants to return to the US.

A pot dispensary is expected to open in Blaine, he said, but the licence hasn’t been granted yet.

“It’s legal to possess,” Saunders said. “So if you make it over the border you can buy it and you can use it.”

Saunders noted Washington’s legalization of pot doen’t extend to use by minors age 18 or under.

And anyone who brings a “truckload” of pot over the border can still expect to be prosecuted under US federal law.

Ironically, he said, while an admission of mari-juana use in the distant past can bar you from the US for life, convicted drunk drivers face no such problem.

“If you have multiple DUIs you are admissable to the US,” Saunders said. “A DUI is not a crime of moral turpitude because you didn’t have the intention to drive drunk. Because you were drunk.”

Don’t be lulled into honesty by Washington’s legalization of marijuana

Admitting pot use at the US border may get you banned

World-class attraction coming to VancouverThat trip to Disneyland might need to wait another year. FlyOver Canada, a spectacular new visitor attraction that takes guests on a soaring aerial journey from coast to coast, is opening this spring at Canada Place. Located in the former IMAX theatre, the $16-million, 30-minute experience (the rst of its kind in Canada), will lift groups of up to 60 guests at time in front of a large custom, spherical screen, where they will move in concert to a lm of the most stunning bird’s-eye vistas of Canada. The immersive effect will be complete with the addition of ‘4D’ wind, scent, mist and sound elements. Nearly three years in the making, the project is the result of a partnership involving Stephen Geddes and Andrew Strang, and the Aquilini Investment Group – owners of the Vancouver Canucks. A trailer for the FlyOver Canada experience is up at WEVancouver.com.

Spring’s vitamin C: colour With the sun comes some Vancouver styles to brighten up our wardrobe

By Taraneh Ghajar Jerven

As the city springs into blossom, Vancouver designers have got your style needs covered. Put aside drab raincoats and black wardrobe staples. This season, it’s all about colour. From bold brights, to pretty pastels, and pop accessories, here are three easy

ways to wear the spring 2013 colour palette.

Bright OutHead-to-toe brights are the look of the season. What should be your favorite colour? Accord-ing to Pantone, the world colour trend expert, it’s all about emerald green. Going by the run-way, you’ll also want to integrate cobalt blue and citrus yellow. Even raincoats have gone bright. Shake off the winter doldrums with Allison Wonderland’s spring 2013 Mcintosh ($248) in jade. Fittingly, Vancouver designer Allison Smith was inspired to design the coat during a spring walk in the park. Plum Boutique has a feminine, lemon yellow dress with a peplum waist ($129) in their Simone collection this season. Plum’s Simone line is designed and manufactured in Vancouver.

Pretty PastelsIf you prefer pastels to primary colours, take your inspiration from Vancouver’s 40,000 cherry trees and opt for pale pinks. Aritzia’s Lelia Dress ($145) is perfectly blos-som. Too girly? Move on to light mints, grayed jade and dusky blues. Vancouver label Dace has useful mint green separates including the above-the-knee scamp skirt ($180) and flirty bambi shorts ($140) in cot-ton. Even lululemon’s neon workout gear — Power Y Tanks ($52) and the Street to Studio jacket ($98) — has faded into parfait pink, bleached coral and mellow lemon.

When it comes to bags, Vancouver-designed Herschel Supply Co.’s heritage rucksacks and totes now come in vibrant cobalt, purple, teal and daffodil this season.

Pop Accessories The easiest way to add a pop of spring colour, without investing big bucks in the head-to-toe trend, is to update your acces-sories. Vancouver designer Mona Sultan’s spring 2013 silk chiffon scarf collection ($175 each) features gorgeous color-block-ing in rose, teal, royal blue and citrus yel-low. Wrap a bright print scarf around your neck to transform a neutral outfit into a statement. Alternatively, be brave and wear it bandana-style.

Pattern onFor footwear, we’re loving the strik-ing embroidered colour panels in the tan leather Hudson Coachella Multi ankle boot ($295), a vibrant take on the festival boot, available at Gastown footwear boutique Row-an Skye. For the ideal day-to-night heel, try the primary yellow Filippa wedge sandals ($175) at Camper — a longtime friend to women’s feet.

GET THE LOOKWE Vancouver intern Brittany Tiplady, from Kwantlen College’s journalism program, models two spring outfits: school by day, patio by sunset.

April Hot ticketsCherry blossom festival a bouquet of cultures

By Taraneh Ghajar Jerven

Linda Poole is on her cherry blossom-em-blazoned smartphone asking the City of Vancouver to fix the Burrard Bridge banners that came loose during a storm. Rain is the

biggest obstacle for the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival founder. Rain and fundraising. In its ninth year, however, you wouldn’t know it to see the packed festival lineup.

This spring heralds the biggest festival thus far. In 2005, VCBF consisted of a photo contest and a taiko drummer. This year, a barrage of events run the month of April, including the Cherry Jam street party, Sakura Days Japan Fair, the World Umbrella Dance, Bike the Blossoms and a balloon haiku installation at Burrard Station.

“Cherry blossoms are universally loved,” says Poole, a former cultural attache who was inspired to start VCBF after learning about Japan’s sakura (blossom) celebrations.

VCBF not only showcases the 800 cherry trees Japan gave to Vancouver, it also celebrates 40,000 trees spread throughout Vancouver and the diverse set of people who helped plant them.

“We have over 1,000 addresses telling you where to go see cherry trees on Google Maps. There’s also a photo and the time it blooms,” explains Poole, who credits her tireless Cherry Scouts for the intel. Festival-organized bike rides and blossom walks

will help festival goers find the pretty pockets of pink and learn their history.

The 2013 festivities also benefit from a hearty dose of Vancouver multiculturalism. International celebrity Shiamak Davar — known for revolu-tionizing Bollywood dance with a confluence of East-meets-West — has choreographed the popular World Umbrella Dance flash mob, taking place April 13 on the Vancouver Art Gallery steps.

“I wanted a sexy choreographer. But I thought Shiamak is too big of a star,” says Poole. “He’s been on Oprah; he’s opened for Sting.”

Davar, however, was keen (and he’ll be in Van-couver as part of the Times of India Film Awards this week.) “I love being a part of it,” he shares. “The people in Vancouver are so warm. Hundreds of them coming together for the Cherry Blossom Festival is testimony to their ability to embrace various cultures.”

Davar has choreographed the moves to his new hit “Shabop,” meaning “to dance without worry.” Both Davar and Poole aim to beat the 2011 record of 550 flash mob participants. The Japanese taiko drum group, Tetsu Taiko, will accompany “Shabop”.

Poole’s secondary motivation for launching the World Umbrella Dance was solving her rain dilemma. The performance integrates an eye-catch-ing prop: pop art umbrellas designed by Anthony Redpath, a renowned Vancouver conceptual artist.

The umbrellas are for sale ($24.99) at VanDusen Botanical Garden and Urban Tea Merchant.

Famed Bollywood choreographer Shiamak Davar creates mob dance that includes Japanese taiko drummmers

Sakura Days Japan Fair (April 6 to 7 at the

VanDusen Botanical Garden) is the best bet for those eager to learn more about Japanese arts and cuisine during the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival.

Run by Van-couver Japanese Canadian busi-ness and cultural organizations, the ticketed festival-within-a-festival in-cludes martial arts, tea ceremonies, ikebana (flower-arranging classes), sake tasting, taiko drumming, kimono demonstrations and irresistible Japanese street food.

For details on all VCBF events and the map of trees in blossom go to VCBF.ca.

Sakura Days: A festival within a festival

“I realized early on that the best way to grow was to partner with other cultural groups,” says Linda Poole, founder and chief organizer of the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival. Rob Newell photo

You say you want a revolutionA powerful new documentary from Sharkwater director inspires us into action to reverse climate change and save the humans

by Jenn Chic

The girls approach him with magazines, posters, and DVDs in hand. They stare, look away, giggle and take a step closer. Auto-graphs are given, pictures are taken. The

girls swoon. They have just met one of their biggest teen crushes.

A Revolution is about to begin. Make room, David Suzuki... Rob Stewart, a new science hero, has ar-rived.Revolution is Stewart’s new documentary. It fol-

lows Sharkwater, which brought the controversial practice of harvesting nothing more than shark ns to make shark n soup — a Chinese delicacy — to light. Since the release of that movie, anti-shark nning groups around the world have amassed to try to protect one of our planet’s most ancient creatures.

Stewart adds a splash of James Bond to the role of environmental advocate. He is a scientist, activ-ist, and adventurer who doesn’t shy away from

much. He takes us to amazing places and shows us the spectacular side of the natural world.

When the camera pulls back to show us the whole picture of the state of our planet, it doesn’t look very good. It’s depressing, overwhelming and daunting to imagine how we could get ourselves out of this mess — species extinctions, pollution and deforestation, leading us all to a devastating change in our climate. And he says that the largest environmental disaster going on right now is right here in Canada — the Alberta tar sands.

But Stewart offers hope. He believes in us. “I have faith in humanity to make the right

decisions once they know what’s going on,” he says in an interview at the Vancouver Aquarium. “It’s amazing what happens when you start making changes for good. People from all over the place start helping you. People you don’t even know join in and then momentum starts to carry you.”

Stewart is a perfect example of how one person can make a difference. He also introduces us to many others out there who, like him, are younger than 30, and are showing us what it takes to change the world.

“Whatever your age, it’s not too late to get involved. You can make a difference, too, but what we need to get to it NOW. Join the Revolution!”Revolution opens across Canada April 12.

1) Educate your-self. Read, watch, ask — learn more.

2) Question every-thing. We need to change how we think about work, politics, travel, communication, spirituality, rela-tionships, money, LIFE!

3) Vote. We have to take part in politics. If there’s no one out there representing your ideas and beliefs, then perhaps it’s time to be the politician you would vote for.

For her highly anticipated turn at the helm of Arctic Air, sci- icon Amanda Tapping was tasked with wrangling a dragon.

And not just any dragon: Tapping directed David Chilton, author of Canada’s all-time best-selling book (The Wealthy Barber) and the newest investor on CBC’s Dragon’s Den, in the penultimate episode of the sec-ond season of Arctic Air (April 10).

Chilton’s appearance on the hit CBC drama wasn’t the result of any network-dictated cross-promotion. “I asked,” said Chilton in a recent phone interview. “I love Arctic Air.”

Chilton has but one previous acting credit to his name. “I played the undertaker in Oliver! when I was in Grade 12, and I was told that it was one of the worst performances ever given,” he said. Thus, Chilton made sure he brought his A-game to Arctic Air — even though the role wasn’t too far out of his range. “I was method acting myself,” said Chilton of his cameo appearance, which is set

following a Wealthy Barber seminar. It was her time behind the camera

on Arctic Air that was truly restorative for Tapping’s con dence, which, as Tapping shared with WE back in Jan-uary, had been shaken after Sanctuary went off the air in early 2012. “When I nished Arctic Air, I could not have been happier,” said Tapping.

As for Chilton, if he gets his way, CBC viewers will be seeing him all over the schedule. “I want to go in and do Peter Mansbridge’s job one night,” he jokes.

Surf’s up at Steve Nash Fitness ClubsBy Brittany Tiplady

If you’re planning to hit the Tofino waves this summer, Steve Nash Fitness

Club suggests you hit the gym first.

A new program for aspiring surfers al-lows you to get the surfer body, without the ocean.

The Surfset program uses a Rip Surfer X board — a mock surf-board designed to give the real surf experience and a real workout. Developed by profes-sional hockey player Mike Hartwick, Surfset evolved from his love of surfing and appre-ciation for the lean and toned muscles that it gave him.

While it might not be as exciting as hit-ting real waves, Surfset promises to get you fit and ready for the real thing.

“With this, it gives you the basic surf-ing moves, but also gives you strength for the muscles that you need for surfing,” says Surfset trainer Princess Labrador.

“In this class you tar-get everything from the strength component, to the balance component and just like any other fitness class, all levels are welcome.”

Surfset classes are available at the Steve Nash Fitness Club downtown locations.

When the sakura — cher-ry blossoms — bloom in Japan, picnicking becomes a national

sport. In Vancouver, the competi-tion for picnic space isn’t as fierce, but the food events do draw a crowd. From Sakura Westcoast Afternoon Tea Service to Cherry Jam bento boxes and enticing Japanese street eats, here are the top food events at Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival 2013.

Sakura Westcoast Afternoon Tea ServiceThe Urban Tea Merchant is offering Sakura Westcoast Afternoon Tea for

$38 per person through April 30. Crook a pinkie as you sip TWG’s Sakura! Sakura! green tea, enhanced with a scattering of cherry blossoms. The savories are also Japan inspired. The chef upgrades finger sandwiches to sophisticated bites such as miso-maple glazed sable fish in butter lettuce and wasabi and smoked salmon with ponzu jelly. Finish with tea-infused macarons and matcha madeleines as you watch the cherry blossoms drift down in the Alberni courtyard. (1070 West Georgia Street, Urbantea.com)

their SakuraB Bento box lunch, available for rush orders at Cherry Jam Downtown in the Burrard SkyTrain Station at 11am April 4. $20 gets you lunch items includ-ing chirashizushi Tojo style, nagori yuki (grilled halibut coated with rice cracker), and an Ocean Wise sakura roll with seasoned tuna and zucchini tempura in egg crêpe.

Sakura Days Japan FairThere’s a funny proverb “hana yori dango” that translates as “dump-lings rather than flowers,” mean-ing people are more interested in the food than blossoms during sakura festivals. Given the all-star line-up of food vendors at Sakura Days, taking place April 6 and 7 at VanDusen Botanical Garden, we predict this will come true. It’s worth braving the line for ta-koyaki, addictive octopus pancake batter balls with green onions and tempura bits. Japadog will serve up their legendary terimayo dog. New food truck Mogu will be there with crispy karaage — soy, garlic, and ginger marinated chicken deep fried until irresistible. You’ll also find ramen, chirashi (sushi rice topped with sashimi) and sticky red bean paste sweets (5251 Oak Street, Japanfairvancouver.com).

Japanese restaurants’ sakura menusYes, you can eat cherry blossoms. Let an expert show you how to prepare them. A select group of Vancouver chefs has integrated cherry blossoms into menu items. Minami, an aburi (seared) sushi restaurant (1118 Mainland St., Minamirestaurant.com) has a pale pink Sakura Roll with pickled blossoms and Amberjack fish. Tojo’s is offering a seafood salad with a cherry mentaiko vinaigrette. The restaurant imported blossoms from Kyoto, paying 70 cents to $1 per blossom for their distinctive flavour (1133 W. Broadway, Tojo’s.com). Sakura-themed menu items are available through April 30. Visit JapanFairVancouver.com for more sakura menus.

Culinary immersionIn Italy, what’s on the plate has always been directly linked to what’s grow-ing in the nearby fields. Messors Culinary Workshops in Barri takes that a step further. This year, founder Tonio Creanza is importing a little Van-couver into the mix. Chef Owen Lightly of Butter on the Endive Catering (pictured) has been asked to be Messors’ “chef in the field” for two sessions, June 1 to 10 and July 24 to August 2. Guests will learn how to cook authen-tic Puglian cuisine, forage for wild edible plants, take a butchery class and delve into the history and making of olive oil. There’s even the chance for a three-day extension to immerse yourself into the daily cycle of a shep-herd. The cost of the seven-day program is $1,500; the 10-day program is $1,850, which includes accommodation at Masseria La Selva (an 18th century hunting lodge), meals, classes and excursions. The Joies of spring

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it’s been almost two straight weeks of sun since I tasted the new releases from British Colum-

bia’s JoieFarm winery — that annual tasting is always the first sign of spring in my world.

Owned and operated by former Vancouverites Heidi Noble and Michael Dinn (with Robert Thielicke assisting in both the vineyards and winery), JoieFarm has been a criti-cal and commercial darling around town for nine years now. Not only do the wines offer fantastic value and express the Okanagan’s sunny, mineral-rich terroir with crisp acidity and grace, but the whole line-up pairs well with the way we eat in this part of the world.

The 2012 vintage is an excellent one overall in BC. All of the wines here can be ordered direct from the winery (JoieFarm.com) at the prices below, but tack on couple bucks when shopping in local stores.

JoieFarm 2012 Unoaked Chardonnay | $22.90There’s a nice weight to this year’s edition, perhaps a wee bit heavier than those in the past. This isn’t a negative thing; it just adds a richness that will make the wine stand up to bolder flavours such as barbecued chicken, South Indian curries and more. Preserved lemon and mandarin orange with a few flecks of basil and sage.

JoieFarm 2012 A Noble Blend | $23.90This is Heidi and Mike’s flagship wine, and aromatic blend of Alsa-

tian varietals including Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc and more. The ultra-fragrant nose is ridiculously pretty, with lychee, rose petal and perfumed citrus. On the palate, a bunch of kiwi and guava come tumbling in with a little splash of lemonade at the end. There’s a bit more richness in this year’s Noble Blend too, which makes it perfect for spicy Korean and Thai dishes.

JoieFarm 2012 Riesling | $22.90Whenever I’m teaching a beginner’s wine seminar, I always like to clarify that the wines we’re talking about are made from 100 per cent grapes, that when we say a wine has notes of ‘peaches’ or ‘lime,’ those fruits are not actually in the wine. It’s just that we’re talking about flavour character-istics that the particular grape carries. I bring this up now, because there are so many ripe, juicy pears in this wine that you might think they’re an ingredient! This is certainly a dry and crisp Riesling, but we’re talk-ing the most juicy and charming of Bosc, Bartlett and Asian pears around. Lovely.

JoieFarm 2012 Rosé | $20.90It wouldn’t be summer in Vancouver unless copious amounts of JoieFarm Rosé were being enjoyed throughout the day and every day across the city. This year’s version is composed mainly of Pinot Noir and Gamay, and don’t let that super-sweet strawberry shortcake nose fool you; sip after sip, it’s as refreshing, dry and crisp as you’re hoping for. An Okanagan harvest of plums, cherries, blackberries and peaches. Pairs with almost anything, particularly fish and poultry. Word to the wise: always keep a back-up bottle in the fridge, those opportunities come quite often on hot days.

Sappy sci- romance nds a grooveTHE HOSTStarring Saoirse Ronan, Max IronsDirected by Andrew Niccol When you see a movie based on a Stephenie Meyer novel, there’s a good chance it will bear several hall-marks of a speci c genre — a moody, hormone-fueled teen love triangle is certainly one of them. However, in this case, a convincing performance and a sci- twist make The Host a lot more tolerable than any Twilight lm.

Unfortunately, the sappy and

often forced love story that forms the core of Meyer’s plot comes off as somewhat contrived and over-shadows an intriguing premise that director Andrew Niccol conveys so effectively at the start of the lm.

The screenplay is heavy-handed and much of the produc-tion design lacks creative air. However, Ronan’s commitment to the con icted character adds real

weight to her role and despite its aws, The Host takes itself seriously enough to pose some insightful questions.
