Unit One: Color & Design

Part 1: Color

Primary Colors

Yellow Red Blue

Secondary Colors

Made by combing two primary colors.

Orange Green Violet

Tertiary Colors

Made by mixing a primary and a secondary color.

Yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, red-violet, red-orange and yellow-orange

Complimentary Colors

Colors opposite each other on the color wheel. Assumed to be as different from one another as possible.

Color Properties Hue name of the

color. Tints are light

values that are made by mixing a color with white.

Shades are dark values that are made by mixing a color with black.

Part 2: Color Schemes (using more than one color)

Variations of the same hue (color).

(A painting all in blues such as Navy Blue, Sky Blue, Ocean Blue etc.)

Monochromatic Color Scheme

Complimentary Color Scheme

Colors opposite one another on the color wheel.

Colors next to one another on the color wheel.

Typically three- five colors.

Analogous Color Scheme

Colors equidistant on the color wheel.

Triad Color Scheme

Cool Color Scheme Are blue, aqua, and violet—

water and air elements.

Warm Color Scheme

Yellow, orange, red, and brown—earth and fire elements.

Monochromatic Complimentary

Colors can play tricks on our eyes

Place two complementary colors next to each other and both of them will seem more brilliant.

Color can influence our perception of size.

Red, orange, and yellow increase size and space. (warm Colors)

Blues and greens decrease size and space. (cool colors)
