DeSiard Street Mission

St. Paul’s had our first annual Acolyte Appreciation Sunday on Sunday, April 7 at the 8:30 and 11:00 traditional worship services. These children serve during worship by lighting the altar candles and serving as cross bearer. We appreciate the children who serve Christ at St. Paul’s through this ministry. The children were presented with a certificate of appreciation and a gift of treats and an acolyte pin.

Children who are currently serving as aco-lytes are: Anna Grace Bennett, Landry Bennett, Lucy Bennett, Elise Burch, Pat-rick Garrett, Sara Kate Gregory, Priscilla Guo, Madison Hoover, Sadie Keyes, Ben-jamin Landry, Davis Landry, Thomas Landry, Olive Nolan, Reagan Read, Wil-liam Read, Walt Sartor, Amanda Shelby, Emma Street, Matthew Wolleson, and Patrick Wolleson.

Pictured here are some of the children who were honored.

Our UMM cooked and served around 123 serv-ings of food to the people at the DeSiard Street

Mission on Thursday, April 18. Won’t you help this month?

Thursday, May 17

At the April meeting of the UMM, we decided to change our meeting time to 7:00 A.M. on the second Friday of every month. We will meet in the Fellowship Area outside the kitchen for breakfast, a brief devotional, and fellowship. We will adjourn in plenty of time for everyone to get to work.

One of the reasons for this change is the continuing effort to involve more men of the church in the UMM’s activities. Men, as members of this church, you are automatically members of St. Paul’s UMM. With that membership comes the call to become more actively involved in our ef-forts to assist and aid those less fortunate than ourselves.

The UMM is a service oriented mission group for the church. Through several fundraising ef-forts, we seek to raise monies which we use to assist numerous worthwhile charities in the church and in the community. Many of you already participate in activities such as cooking for the To Do at the Zoo. Will you not consider doing more, being more, giving more by becoming an active, participating member of your UMM?

Also, we as that you please be in Prayer for our longtime UMM member Van Leigh and his family during this time.

Dear Friends,

The Lord is risen! Hallelujah! What a glorious celebration Easter is. It is the highlight of the Christian year. It reminds us that our God is so powerful that He can defeat death. It reminds us that God loves us so much that He sacrificed His most precious gift to us, His son Jesus, the Christ. It reminds us that we, too, as His followers, will defeat death and will live with Him for-ever. Oh, yes, the Lord is risen indeed! Hallelujah!

I love the beautiful symbols we use in the church to celebrate this time of year. First comes the palm waving and the enthusiasm of our children as they recreate Jesus’ tri-umphant entry into Jerusalem. Then comes Maundy Thursday with the Eucharist, or Holy Communion, the last meal Jesus shared with the disciples. That symbol of the bread and juice that we eat around a single table reminds us that we are connected to each other through our shared love and devotion to our Christ. Good Friday, that dark-

est of all days, is represented by a cross, an ancient instrument of torture and pain. We drape a black cloth around it and leave the altar bare of decoration, reminding us of that bleakest of all days, the day our Lord and Savior was cruelly tortured and hung on the cross. Ah, but then comes Easter. Just when we think all is lost, that all hope is gone, we find that Jesus really IS alive. Oh yes, His promises are true. Our God has conquered death. In the church, we celebrate with a multitude of Easter lilies, with a white cloth on that empty cross, with shouts of acclamation, with beautiful hymns and joyful singing. Christ, the Lord, is risen today! Hallelujah!

The Paschal candle is another symbol of the Easter season. It is bigger than the Christ candle we light on Christmas, for what is bigger than the birth of a king? Only the resur-rection of our King from the dead. Throughout the season of Easter (the fifty days follow-ing the resurrection) the Paschal candle will remain lighted to remind us of the resurrec-tion message: the Risen Christ is present here among us today, with us and for us for all time. The darkness of the crucifixion is replaced with the light of the risen Christ. My hope for us during this season of Easter is that we, the community of believers called St. Paul’s UMC, will reflect the light of that Paschal candle, the bright light of a living Christ, and share the Easter message with all we meet during this season of Easter. Christ has risen! He has risen indeed! Hallelujah! Peace, my friends . . . Tim

What a beautiful day! A small group of St. Paul's ladies traveled to enjoy the day on April 13th in a small bit of paradise, Hodges Gardens State Park. The ladies were led on a de-lightful tour by one of the park rangers who was very knowledgeable of the history and the plants of the gardens. The flowers, rose gar-dens, waterfalls, reservoir, and landscaping were a wonderful testament to the handiwork of God in nature.

Eighteen of our 21 Confirmands attended the Confirma-tion Day with the Bishop retreat on April 12-13. Jill Mouk and Chad Brooks were chaperones. The group left Monroe on Friday and drove to Pineville where we checked into the hotel and walked next door to the Pizza Hut for dinner. The manager at Pizza Hut had re-cently installed an X-Box game of Karaoke…Jill was a bit anxious about this new addition as ALL of the students were anxious to play! Luckily, the music was ap-propriate (mostly) and the kids who sang had a great time…the others watching had a pretty good time too! Madison Hoover was the grand champion of the Karaoke challenge. Look out American Idol!!!

Following dinner at Pizza Hut, the group headed back to the hotel for swimming in the indoor pool. Imagine 18 sixth graders jumping, splashing, laugh-ing, and screaming in an enclosed room with a very loud echo… Jill and Chad were looking for ear plugs! The group settled in for the night safely “taped” in their rooms around 10:30 and amazingly, they were pretty quiet for the night. (Chad and Jill heard stories about how late the kids stayed up, but no one woke them up so all was well!)

Saturday morning the group gath-ered for breakfast and a Bible study devotion with Jill and then headed to the Wesley Center for the Day with the Bishop where they attended classes about the sacraments, missions, our Method-ist history, and praise and worship. It was a great trip! We have a great group of Con-firmands this year. The group will be con-firmed during the 11:00 Tra-ditional Wor-ship service on May 19.
