The Future City ® Competition is a hands-on, real-world learning experience for middle school students to learn how engineers shape the world we live in today and tomorrow. Now in its 16 th year in the Capital District and in its 25 th year nationally, Future City is recognized by the education and engineering communities as one of the nation’s leading programs for enabling students to make the connection between math and science to engineering through its real- world applications. Through the September to January program, 6 th , 7 th , and 8 th grade students work in teams to apply their imaginations and early engineering skills in math, science, and technology to design a realistic city of the future. With the guidance of their teacher and engineering mentor they will: 1. Follow the engineering design methodology 2. Develop a Project Plan 3. Design their city using SimCity TM software 4. Research and write an essay on this year’s topic 5. Build a 3-D model of their city 6.
