No matter which kit you’ve elected to start your journey with, your new e-cigarette [mostly referred to from here on in as an e-cig] is about to become your new Best Friend Forever [BFF] so let’s take some time to get to know your e-cig better. In the pages that follow you’ll learn all about the individual pieces of an e-cig, how they fit together and how they work together to produce that magic vapour. When you first start vaping, you’ll notice some subtle differences between smoking a cigarette and vaping with an e-cig. Although the physical actions are similar, the reactions within your body are slightly different. When you draw on a cigarette, you generally take short, hard puffs but when you draw on an e-cig the key to maximum enjoyment is to slow down, slow way down. It’s a combination of the time it takes for the battery to reach the right heat to vaporise the liquid instantly and the time it takes for nicotine to reach the brain, to give you the best vaping experience. Take long, slow draws [around 8 seconds is a good guide] and hold the vapour in your mouth for a moment before drawing into your lungs [consensus is that you get a better ‘hit’ that way]. It takes 8 seconds for nicotine to reach the brain via cigarette but 30 seconds via vapour. Take your time and enjoy! We’re here to help with anything you need, so get in touch, any time.

All electronic cigarettes are basically made up of the same components, [even MODS have the same basic parts] and function in the same manner.

Standard individual e-cig components : A battery or power source, a tank or tube to hold liquid, a coil to regulate the flow of liquid to the heating plate and a mouthpiece.

How an e-cig produces the magic vapour : When you press the battery button [some call it a ‘fire’ button], it powers up to heat the plate at the top of the battery to vapourise liquid instantly. Your e-cig will only fire when you press the battery button. The LED light in the button will show when you press the button and go out when you release it.

As you draw through the mouthpiece, air is admitted via the holes in the clearomiser base, pulling the vapour produced on the heating plate through the coil and up through the clearomiser centre tube for you to inhale. Pretty neat trick, huh?

Getting to Know Your E-cig

There’s a couple of important things you need to remember : Don’t block the air holes on the

clearomiser with your finger when you press the battery button

Take long, slow draws to give the heating plate time to hit the right temperature and your brain time to absorb the nicotine.

If you get a gurgling sound when you draw, the heating plate may not be heating fast enough to vapourise the liquid instantly : you’ll need to increase the volts [power] on the battery to heat the plate faster

If you get a burnt taste coming through, the liquid is burning rather than vapourising : turn the volts [power] down on the battery. It’s a matter of playing around until you get the right settings to suit you and the liquid you’re vaping. Darker liquids burn more easily than light.

Below : Remember to connect the charger cable to

a power source before you screw on the battery.

There are more different types of clearomiser, atomiser and cartomiser available than you can poke a stick at, but again , they all function in pretty much the same way : air enters through holes in the base, travels though the coil and out through the mouthpiece. The difference is generally in the coil system, the materials used and sometimes, the mouthpiece. Let’s get into each different bit now . . .

Your e-cig battery will arrive locked, so the first thing you need to do is unlock it. Press the battery button 5 times in under 3 seconds: the LED light will flash to indicate it’s unlocked. Best practice is to charge the battery fully before using your e-cig for the first time. Grab your charger cable and plug it into a USB wall plug or a high speed port on your computer [2.0 or better], making sure a light is showing on the charger body before you screw on the battery. When you screw the battery on, the light on the charger will turn red and stay red until the battery is fully charged, when it changes to green [if you’re using the wall plug, the lights on the plug will mimic the charger : red while charging and both lights will show as well when fully charged - green and red]. When the battery needs recharging, the LED light in the battery button will flash.

The threads of the battery connection point form part of the electrical circuit that powers the battery so it’s important to keep them clean and free from dust or excess liquid. Best practice is to get into the habit of cleaning the battery connection and threads every time you remove the clearomiser, to recharge or refill. Keep your batteries away from water, try not to drop them and don’t leave them lying on your dash in the direct sun or near heat sources. Wipe them over with a damp cloth as required. If you’re storing your e-cig in briefcases, handbags or luggage, it’s best to lock them to avoid accidental discharge or a flat battery when you need it least. Press the battery button 5 times in under 3 seconds [yep, same as unlocking]. All batteries have built in short circuit protection and auto shut off to prevent over charging . . . So while your battery’s charging, lets check out the other e-cig components in more detail.

Vaping 101 : The Battery

The H2 Clearomiser supplied in your kit is one of the most reliable and most popular of the re-buildable clearomisers available. With it’s innovative 3 piece design, it’s easy to fill, easy to clean and throws out plenty of vapour.

Let’s pull it apart and have a good look over it : The base screws on to the battery and houses the coil.

The position of the coil in the base means that it touches the base to allow efficient delivery of liquid to the heating plate. If the coil isn’t touching the heating plate, grab tiny screw driver, place it in the slot in the base of the coil and turn the coil to bring it into place.

We’ve already established that the coil screws into the base and regulates the flow of liquid to the heating plate. The most important thing to remember about the coil is that it must be screwed tightly into the base to maintain the integrity of the seal and avoid leaks. When the coil needs replacing, simply take out the old one and screw in a new one. Different ohm coils will affect the amount of vapour produced : the combination of volts [power] and ohms [resistance] will produce different levels of vapour and subtle changes in the flavour of whatever you’re vaping. As a basic rule, lower ohms equals more vapour and higher volts equals more vapour and it’s warmer.

Vaping 101 : Clearomisers and Coils

The body has an integrated mouthpiece , making it easy to fill and easy to clean. The centre tube stops just short of the metal base ring where the coil will slide into place and complete the seal when the base and coil unit are screwed on

If you do happen to get some liquid in the centre tube when filling, grab a cotton bud or tissue and run it down the centre tube to remove all excess liquid. The other way is to turn the clearomiser so that the base faces the ceiling, put a tissue over the base end and gently blow through the mouthpiece.

Your H2 clearomiser uses a range of coils so you can customise your vape : 1.8, 2.3 and 2.5 ohm. The clearomisers are supplied with 2.4 ohm coils. This chart shows suggested coil to battery voltage settings. The best option still remains as playing around with both settings until they suit you best

Vaping 101 : Clearomisers and Coils [continues]

To fill your clearomiser Remove the base and coil unit from the clearomiser

body [if there’s any liquid in it, turn it upside down first or it could get messy]. Give it a bit of a clean up

Direct the needle point of the liquid bottle towards the side of the body to avoid getting any liquid in the centre tube

Screw the base and coil unit back on to the body, screw onto your battery and you’re off and vaping

When selecting the strength of your liquid, there are a couple of things to consider : the strength of the cigarettes you’re currently smoking and the absorption of nicotine via vapour in the body. See, your body only absorbs about 50 - 70% of the nicotine content of the liquid, depending on your health, your fitness and your metabolism. It’s also because the nicotine in a cigarette is carried to your lungs in smoke, which is around 1 micron in size and can reach further down into your lungs, whereas the nicotine in vapour is carried in water, which is around 10 microns in size and therefore takes longer to absorb and longer to reach the brain [around 8 seconds for a cigarette vs 30 seconds for an e-cig]. The following shows the approximate absorption in a ‘normal’ human [calculated at 50% absorbed] :

High Strength ~ 24.0mg equals 12.0mg which is 19.2mg absorbed

Medium Strength ~ 16.0 - 18.0mg equals 8.0 / 9.0mg which is 12.8 / 14.4mg absorbed

Low Strength ~ 10.0 - 12.0mg equals 5.0 / 6.0mg which is 0.8 / 9.6mg absorbed Ultra Low Strength ~ 6.0 - 8.0mg equals 3.0 / 4.0 which is 0.48mg / 0.64mg absorbed

Safety First : Do not drink e-liquids. E-liquids are meant for use in vapourising devices only

Use e-liquids only as directed, and only with an e-cig Keep liquids in a safe place, out of reach of children and pets Do not store in a hot place, near constant heat sources or in direct sun light Do not store in an overly cold place and prevent freezing (the fridge is OK, but not the freezer) Incorrect storage may cause liquids to spoil or lose their flavour or in some cases, ferment If you get any excess liquid on your lips or hands, wipe the area immediately and wash with soap and water Always wash your hands after re-filling your e-cig or handling liquids. Another option is to use disposable gloves

when ever you handle liquids If you experience any unusual side effects when using liquids, discontinue use immediately and seek advice from a

health professional

Please note : PG is typically harmless for humans, but dogs and cats [especially cats] are sensitive to propylene glycol and can get really sick from inhaling or ingesting PG. So if you have critters [or fur babies], make sure you don’t blow vapour at their fuzzy little faces. Vape in an open area of the house with the door open so you don’t affect your furry mates.
